Alyssa Milano: I Shut Down Production on My Show to Pump

06/03/2013 at 07:30 PM ET

Alyssa Milano Mistresses Premiere Breastfeeding Eric Charbonneau/Wireimage

A visit to the set of mom Alyssa Milano‘s new show Mistresses proved that son Milo Thomas definitely has his anatomy down pat.

When the actress and her now 21-month-old ran into costar Jes Macallan, Milo was more than happy to keep her abreast of his skills.

“She was in a bathing suit and he looked at her and he went, ‘Chi chis!’ He’s a breastfed baby,” Milano, 40, told PEOPLE during the TCAs.

But nursing Milo was nothing new to the cast and crew, says the proud mama, who recalls having to routinely request quick trips to her trailer to pump.

“Everyone had to be very patient with me when we filmed the pilot of the show because I was still breastfeeding,” Milano says.

“Every two hours they shut down production for 20 minutes and allowed me to pump, which was lovely … and odd.”

Mistresses premieres Monday at 10 p.m. on ABC.

Yeah ‘great’ show – glorify sk an ks who steal other women’s husbands. Real classy.

Rachael on

As long as everyone else was still paid and didn’t have to work late because of her, good for her. However, you can train your body so you can get as much milk in fewer pumping sessions. Every 2 hours is a bit excessive.

Kim on

If he’s steal-able, the relationship must not be that great to start with, CJ. Think about that.

LES on

Well, it IS all about her.

Lizzy on

Pumping every 2 hours for an almost 2 year old? It’s a good thing she has a cushy celebrity job where she can just shut everything down several times a day just to pump. She’s ridiculous and so is this story.

Rachel on

CJ you need a life. Wow.. seek help

Aeol on

Employers are required by law to provide time and facilities for breast-pumping moms, so I’m sure it didn’t financially impact the production.

mimi J on

Congrats on breastfeeding! It takes a real women to put her childs needs first. A+ to her employer for allowing her to pump at work

Anonymous on

Fewer pumping sessions will deplete your milk supply. I’m a LC and I encourage all pumping mom to pump every 2 hours.

jasmine.mehes@gmail.com on

They said her child is 21 months now, not when filming. 2 hours for a baby is very reasonable and necessary if she wants to maintain her supply. Good for her.

?? on

won’t be watching this show. agree with you cj

Tammy on

mimi J, that’s so rude. I nursed for the first year of my son’s life but that doesn’t make me more of a “real woman” than women who didn’t.

Selma on

Chi Chi’s is hispanic slang for “tits”. Nice.

Katia on

So she clearly says & then it’s in the video “when I started filming the Pilot” her son was 8 months old.

It’s Hollywood. Not our everyday lives. That’s why we look on here it’s more interesting. LOL

Meghan on

If you read the article Lizzy, you’d see that she said they shut down when they were filming the pilot, as she was still breast feeding then. Implying that she is no longer breast feeding. Furthermore, WHO advocates breast feeding until at least one, two years if possible. That IS what boobs are for.

Sat on

Can’t stand her. She thinks shes a way bigger star than she is and the main reason I don’t know if I can watch or not.

jenniferlynne01 on

I loved the UK version of Mistresses. But without Mark Umbers as Dr. Dan, I don’t see the point of watching the US version. To me, he and Shelley Conn were the best thing about Mistresses, and neither are on this version. If you don’t know who Mark Umbers is go to IMDb and look him up. Delicious to look at and a very good actor, too :) Plus he is very friendly, he has talked back and forth with me on twitter many, many times.

Donna on

she said she was still breast feeding when they were shooting the pilot for the show not that she is still currently breastfeeding…

Callie on

Seriously? She couldn’t “pump” and have the milk ready? Snob!

Ashley on

Great for her, we need more celebrities to stand behind breastfeeding. Every two hours to pump is perfect and any well educated person knows milk production works by supply and demand, the more you demand, the more you supply. She’s an awesome person and clearly an awesome momma.

Anonymous on

Mom’s who do not breastfeed are real women too! They have their reasons and it should be respected! Grow up people!

Anonymous on

I think they should just shut the show down all together. What has TV and society come to when there is a show about mistresses?

Diva on

Too much information! I dont want to hear about a woman using a breast pump!

BlueSkidoo on

Lizzy, she said this was when she was breastfeeding, not now. And no, with a young baby you shouldn’t do fewer sessions. Every two hours is recommended. Also, it’s the law for California employers to allow it anyway, so it wasn’t “cushy” or all about her. Many of us with much lower profile jobs got the same “cushion.”

Pumpingwhiletyping:) on

Seriously Lizzy, chill out and stop hating. Her comments and the article talked about when she WAS breastfeeding, not that she is currently breastfeeding her almost 2 year old. Overall this is another silly article by People trying to make something out of nothing.

As for taking time out to pump, how many times do you take a coffee/cigarette/bathroom/Internet break for 10-20 minutes? Honestly, I highly doubt the ENTIRE operation shut down every time she had to pump, unless she’s in every scene… which she probably isn’t… I’m just sayin…

non-ya on

Yall need to find something better to do than blog about people to dont do the same for you. Bitches be tripping.

dana on

Interesting… I shut down watching the show about 6 different times in order to vomit.

Wavygravytrain on

Good for her and good for ABC! Men can bang women on the clock and it is culturally acceptable and supported. So, why is it “selfish” for a woman to take breastfeeding breaks? Breastfeeding is optimal for the health, well being, and future growth of babies. She isn’t being a demanding diva. She is being a good mother and she has an employer that is supportive of her first and primary role in life: being a mother. Lawd,

gigi on

Breast feeding always causes drama…to each their own…THE END!

Colleen on

Why does CJ need a life Rachel? She isn’t entitled to her opinion? I don’t blame her for feeling that way. I wouldn’t want to watch some glorified show on women seducing husbands and taking/breaking them away from their families. We need a life because that topic isn’t something we agree with?!?! I’m not a prude or a Mormon, but, as a married woman/mother, it would bother me also!!!!

Mila on

Oh grow up Diva.

Smile on

Callie, if you’re breastfeeding, you need to pump every certain hours (everybody is different).

Ini on

@ Meghan: WHO actually says 3 months of breastfeeding are fine and enough. If ever they claim you should breastfeed longer it is for third world countries who haven’t enough food! I am so sick of women who don’t allow for their children to grow up but attach them via breastfeeding until they are five or even seven. It is a worrying trend

Meaghan on

There are several reports out there talking about the health benefits of breast feeding children so good for her for doing it as long as she can…why not have a show about people having relationships outside of marriage, it happens for many people and this is s way to show just how many people can be affected by these actions… Better than the Bachelorette!

Lucy on

If she were breast feeding then why was she pumping? I nursed my child for 2 years and didn’t pump. Seems to me if she were closing down production she would have been nursing her child. NOT pumping so a nanny or others could feed and bond with her child.

Mandy on

The lactation nurse I spoke to recommended pumping every 2 hours or at least every 3 hours. By law employers are supposed to allow this & a place for it to be done other than a bathroom.

Anonymous on

who cares? this show is another abc sex hour. why not give us entertainment

Sarah on

How about being with your baby instead? Sadly, celebrity moms are everywhere EXCEPT with their own children.

Poppy on

A 21 month old is a toddler, not a baby.

What??? on

A show about whores sleeping with married men as entertainment while she pumps for her baby. Just stupid.

JustSayin on

Apparently no one has heard about the health benefits for the mom who continues to breastfeed as long as possible? There is a greatly reduced risk of both breast, and ovarian cancer, in women who breasfeed at least one child, for a period of six months or more. I also think it’s an odd commentary on our society, that some of you bash a woman for her parenting/work choices, while sitting on your butts doing NOTHING!

CM on

Once again – what is with all the judgement. Good grief almost everyone on here. She was probably outright asked about this question (although dads in Hollywood often aren’t asked about caring for their kids) and she answered honestly and was accomodated according to CA state law. SO WHAT if you think or did or would do it different. Everyone is different and this is what worked for her. Please calm down.

Em on

Idk who told you that 3montha of breastfeeding are ‘fine and enough’ but that is def not so. It is recommended that women breastfeed their children for at least 1 year to build up a natural and healthy immunity that formula could never provide.

Terri on

Holier then thou people that are hating on a woman for doing what is her god given right ,which is to feed her child , ARE YOU KIDDING ME !!! and s far as the plot for the series before judging WATCH IT , it is not showing you it’s ok to cheat , it’s showing you that there are different reasons ..right are wrong , are indifferent , I don’t condone cheating but in some cases it just might be understood ….I watched it the first night and it was a AWESOME show …just saying ,,PS . I will be watching the whole series ,,,,

Kelli on

Ever been on a production set Lucy? This was during the PILOT. They can be on set for 18 hours plus for days, weeks. Would you have your baby sitting in your trailer all day just so you could nurse him? No. She pumped as to not mess up his routine. What any business is it of your anyways? Who cares?!

Kelli on

Your point Poppy?

pmede on

You really ought to get some mental health work done.

You aren’t grounded in everyday reality-life doesn’t stop every two hours so you can lactate.

You really aren’t capable of working a regular day, so your bragging?

Kelli on

Regardless of breast feeding, you are what’s wrong with society today Ini. Thinking our 5 and 7 year olds should grow up?! They are small children! They shouldn’t have to deal with the crap of the world at that age. I would never BF my child at that age but I hope to make it to 2 years as that is what is recommended, not 3 months! Why would you intentionally switch to formula at 3 months after getting through the rough first few months? Formula fed babies don’t switch to something else at 3 months and breast milk is always better than formula.

Dr G on

Em – 3 months is all your baby needs to build up immunities. I am a pediatrician so I would know. Anything after 3 months is a bonus.

Cinder Lou on

The only thing “odd” is why this is news for public knowledge.

CRH216 on

I am more disturbed about a show glorifying cheating than her breast feeding routine. Cheating if awful and I have seen it destroy families. Considering she is a married woman herself you would think she would have some standards.

Erin on

@ Ini: That is simply not what WHO recommends at all. (http://www.who.int/topics/breastfeeding/en/) WHO says exclusive breast milk for 6 months and continued breastfeeding along with complementary feeding for 2 years or more. I’m not invested in what mothers chose for themselves and their babies, but we have to at least have the information about the recommendations, whether or not we follow them.

Beth on

Callie, where does the “pumped” milk come from? Not sure what the quotations are for. In order to have expressed milk for my son the NEXT day, I needed to pump the day before.

Ronnie on

Watch the show before you make judgements. AM character is married, another is a widow… So on… PS if you have a strong foundation no one can break that bond.

Diane on

Too much information

Terri on

BREASTFEEDING is every woman’s right and I see nothing wrong with it unless they are way past the stage where they should be drinking out of a cup .the good lord gave us breast that produces milk for a reason and thats to give our children what they need , rather we choose to are not is our choice.. I think people need to get off their high horses and remember it’s a natural thing and if the boss is ok with it then and gives her time to do it then I say HECK YEA FOR THEM and as far as the ladies of the series ..2 is single ,1 widowed and 1 married with a lot of marital problems, which does not mean for her to cheat but , it shows there is a reason behind it and what hell it puts every one through , MAYBE JUST MAYBE , the reason is to show people why NOT to , instead of you people thinking it’s showing it’s cool to ..WATCH IT PEOPLE THEN PLACE JUDGEMENT!!!!

gigi on

People are going to breast feed or not breastfeed no matter what kind of post u gals put on here. Move on.

angel on

First of all, good for Alyssa Milano to not only breastfeed her child, but to also speak of it without shame. It is normal, and it is part of what we are biologically designed to do. This is not to ostracize those who choose not to or cannot breastfeed. It’s a personal choice:)

Secondly, why is everyone so hung up on the concept of “mistresses” and sex outside of marriage? This is FICTION, it’s entertainment, not real life. No one is condoning it, they are just making a television show! We watch endless series depicting shootings, stabbings, torture, etc. And this is better than watching sex? I cannot stand people who get all hung up about nudity and sexuality but give glorified violence and death a free pass. No wonder our nation is filled with so many acts of random violence.

Nasty on

I thought the same thing,oh great a show about cheater’s! That’s just what we want on tv, more trash! Morals obviously don’t seem to exist anymore if anyone watches crap like that!!

Jennu on

Holy Smokes Batman!! I’ve never read so much junk regarding Breastfeeding. Kudos to Alyssa for making to choice to breast feed, and for following a schedule her doctor suggested in order to keep producing milk. Kudos also, to her co-workers for being patient with her while she took care of her son’s needs.
As for pumping vs feeding real-time…I can’t imagine having an infant on set for 12-18 hours when he can be home in his environment.
I don’t understand bashing this particular working mom, when millions of women do it everyday. We live in a society where woman can ‘have it all’ …the man, the job, the kids. So why are people berating this woman for having it all?
When both of my boys were born, I wanted to breastfeed but was unable. But if I could have, the job I had qould’ve givwn me the time I needed to take care of my baby’s needs. So it’s not because Alyssa is an actor and has a ‘cushy’ job…a lowly lil ole bartended would’ve been afforded the same ‘cush’.
I haven’t watched the show yet, I didn’t realize it began last night…. As a woman who has been cheated on, I’m interested in the reasons behind WHY a man would cheat.
I stayed home after my 2nd child was born, as my husband’s job afforded for us to do that. I still stay home with my kids (22 & 15) even though they’re at an age they don’t necessarily need me.
I have a different role now, my husban’s grandmother is disabled (has lives with us for 13 years) and became disabled 5 years ago.
Anyway….every woman who is going to take on a career and be a mother, should be given the time to breastfeed/pump to give their children the necessities as their mother sees fit.

All the ugliness being spewed against Alyssa makes me think many of the haters are just plain jealous of the very beautiful and talented woman, who has figured out how to have it all.
