Great Ideas! 4 Chic Spring/Summer Kiddie Trends You Have to Try

05/29/2013 at 10:00 AM ET

Now that the warmer weather is here, it’s time for your little ones to shed those thick winter layers and show off their spring/summer wardrobe. Luckily, anything (mod stripes, pastels, big or small floral prints and all-American motifs) goes right now.

And we’ve tapped Marissa Kraxberger, head of creative at Oscar de la Renta, to explain how to wear this season’s biggest trends. Not only is she responsible for the brand’s childrenswear blog George & Ruby, but she’s also a mother of two so she’s had plenty of real world practice styling kiddie looks.

GRAPHIC STRIPES This classic meets Mod style works best when you mix bold stripes paired with retro accessories. Here, I paired a striped one piece bathing suit and a striped romper with a sparkly barrette, heart hair pin and simple black sandals for a girl. For a similar boy look, I chose a navy and white cotton sweater, red twill shorts, black frames and red sneakers.

FLORALS For girls, small floral prints like this circle blouse look chic and pair well with similar patterns (headband, T-strap sandals). Add white mini shorts and oversize sunnies and she’s ready for a day at the beach. When dressing your little boy, don’t be afraid to throw pretty floral accessories (necktie) into the mix. They equally work well with bright (V-neck sweater) or neutral (twill shorts) pieces. To bring it all together, add a dark loafer.

ALL-AMERICAN There’s no need for graphic tees when celebrating fireworks this 4th of July — these dressier red, white and blue ensembles are picnic-party chic. For girls, I suggest investing in well-made, beautiful dresses (like this beautiful red number paired with tortoise sunglasses, gold bow earrings and white ballet flats) that they can wear for any occasion. Your little guy will always look dapper in a crisp white button up shirt paired with a printed tie, dark denim pants and a braided belt. It’s never too early to start teaching them the importance of dressing their best.

PASTELS You’re probably over neons — I know I am. But I love colors that are off the beaten style path. Try this softer palette for special events or just brunch with mom and dad. Take this sweet polka dot frock up a notch with playful accessories including lime green sandals, D.I.Y daisy headband (my sister made this one!) and a pink glitter purse. For your little guy, take one piece (isn’t this pink linen blazer adorable?) and pair it with neutrals (cream trousers and brown straw fedora) for a completely standout outfit.

Mom Said It

"We weren't trying to have kids. We left it up to fate. I knew there was a possibility, but I was really excited. Even if you are trying, just to see a positive result is shocking!"
