Kerri Walsh Jennings: Why We Chose the Name Scout Margery

Miss Universe Kerri Walsh Jennings Baby Name Explained

After husband Casey Jennings had the chance to channel his favorite character for sonΒ Sundance‘s name, Kerri Walsh Jennings had dibs on their daughter’s moniker.

But when the couple’s baby girl arrived Saturday, the beach volleyball star skipped feature films and made a beeline for her favorite book for a bit of inspiration, settling on Scout Margery for their little girl.

“Scout is my favorite character in all of literature — Scout Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. She’s brilliant. She loves her family and I just love her little spirit,” Walsh Jennings said while introducing her daughter onΒ Today Tuesday.

“And Margery is after my mother, who is the most beautiful human being I ever met.”

But in addition to sporting the same name, Walsh Jennings’ daughter may have also scored some of her namesake’s feisty personality. The athlete was induced three days prior to her due date and after a slow start, it wasn’t long before baby girl was ready for her big debut.

“It was lightning fast,” says the newly minted mom-of-three, adding that the doctor didn’t make it in time for the delivery.

“I knew what was happening, and I think [the nurses] are just so used to it taking a longer time,” says pro volleyball player Jennings. “If [Kerri]’s hurting, it’s go time and they started to get a little more heat on it and … the nurses brought the baby into the world.”

With three gold medals under her belt — and now three children to match — Walsh Jennings, 34, is ready to get back in the game and win big at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“I’m not done dancing yet. As far as I’m concerned, I’m just beginning,” she says of her plans to go for a fourth win. “Between now and then there’s a lot of tournaments to play in. I know what I’m gunning for, but Rio gold is the ultimate.”

Very sweet. But why was she induced three days before her due date? I might have missed it, but I thought she wanted everything to happen naturally?

This woman is my hero. Three babies born between three Olympic appearances where she took GOLD…. She’s a real life super woman!

Welcome to the world Scout. I absolutely love your Mom!!! To “Kill a Mockingbird” is my most favorite book. Congratulations Kerri and Casey and to the two big brother that will watch over little Scout.

Love it! A friend gave her daughter the middle name “Scout” for the same reason. And the gift to her mom – so sweet. Congrats!

I agree Sherae!

My favorite literary character also. Since we have boys, I’ve tried to get my husband to agree the name for one of our dog’s but no luck yet.

One of my fave books & movies, too, an all time classic..I wonder if the author knew she would inspire so many baby names?! I think it is an adorable name, catching on, still unique :). πŸ™‚

“Ridiculous name” – says Sherae….

Anon- I’m wondering that, too. My guess is that she was having minor complications (such as her fluid being low or the baby showing signs of distress). She doesn’t seem like the type of person who would schedule an early induction for no reason. πŸ™‚

Anyway, Scout is adorable!

Nice family πŸ™‚

Scout fits them perfectly. I love the name for them.

Who cares why she was induced? Who cares how any baby is brought into this world for that matter??? As long as everyone is healthy, its a non-issue.

While I LOVE the name Scout, people always seem to forget that the character’s name in To Kill A Mockingbird is Jean Louise Finch and her nickname is Scout. That being said, I think the name is adorable (I’ve always said I’d name a daughter Harper and call her Scout)

jay- So you don’t care that so many women let their doctors talk them into C-sections that aren’t really neccesary (or request one themselves when there’s no medical reason to have one)? Or that more and more women are choosing to induce early just because they don’t want to be pregnant longer or because it’s otherwise more “convienient” for them?

The fact of the matter is, those things carry HUGE risks for both mother and baby….and since babies can’t speak up themselves, it’s our job to speak up for them and urge doctors and hospitals to rethink their policies, to educate women on the dangers of elective inductions and C-sections (particularly early ones which, as a due date is only an estimate and can be off as much as a couple weeks, can result in a baby being born prematurely), and to encourage their patients to let nature take it’s course unless complications arise!

BTW, I’m NOT saying Kerri induced early for no reason. As I said last night, I don’t think she did. I was speaking about women in general.
