Mom Celebrates Her Son’s Birth – 13 Years Later

02/13/2013 at 04:00 PM ET

Introducing their bouncing baby … er, teenage boy!

After Kelli Higgins and her husband adopted son Latrell and his sister Chanya in 2011, the proud parents realized they would never be able to add their two newest children’s baby photos to the family album.

“I was very sad too because I didn’t have any photos of him either,” Higgins tells Today. “I think it’s really hard to have children and not know what they looked like when they were younger.”

That is, until the couple’s 12-year-old daughter suggested staging a newborn photo shoot featuring none other than her big brother, Latrell.

And, with that, Higgins, a professional photographer, pulled out the swaddling blanket and went to work. The result? A cute collage of Latrell in classic poses — feet included.

“Here’s my sweet not so little newborn! His name is Latrell and he weighs 112 lbs.,” Higgins captioned the series on Facebook.

With the funny take on tradition going viral — it’s earned over 3,000 shares on Facebook — Higgins is hopeful it will shed light on a more serious topic.

“The one reaction that is really humbling and I’m really excited about is there have been a lot of parents that come to me telling me that they were thinking about adopting a baby, but after seeing those photos it’s changed their minds and they want to adopt an older child,” Higgins explains.

I think this is a great way to introduce a new child into a family. Just as sweet and memorable.

sandrah on

Very sweet, love it!

Xan on

I commend these parents and their clever kids for this. It’s really heartwarming that they wanted to commemorate the start of their family. They have every right to do so the way that parents of a biological newborn do. The fact that it’s so funny is great, too. πŸ˜‰

I love the sentiment, but the execution ends up creepy.

Love This. What a great Mom!

Katie on

I’m adopted and came here when I was 5 months old. But I think this is an AWESOME idea for those who do adopt at an older age and shows the love will grow and blossom into something amazing. Bless these parents and these kids that do an awesome thing to include even if they don’t have those pictures as an infant. πŸ™‚

kim on

Wow… What lucky kids. Awesome parents to take that on. Applaud…………….May God Bless your family

why didnt they do a shoot with chanya too? the other adopted baby?

This is great. Maybe mom can reach out ro somebody who has the age progression software and do a regression to guess what he may have looked like as a baby etc…

So sweet and memorable. Such an amazing way to introduce a child into the family. Wish them love and happiness!!!

What a touching and inspiring story. You can feel the love that went into these photos and the idea behind them. Bless this family!

Loved the photos. There’s got to be a lot of love in that family to show the world what being a family is all about. Simply beautiful. Smart!

This is creepy and why is this under “celebrity babies”??

Who are these people??

It’s a sweet way to announce a family member. So glad 99% of comments are so positive!

Surprised a teen boy agreed to pose! Haha

leonkitty on

This is wrong and creepy

leonkitty on

Wrong and creepy. These kids were better off before they were adopted

April on

Such a wonderful way to celebrate a new addition, even if they are older…they are loved just the same!!

jackie on

This is so inappropriate. It looks like child porn. He is going to be made fun of at school. The mom should be ashamed of herself. She should be celebrating who he is now not who he was.

Gina-Nicole on

This story really really REALLY put a smile on my face! Thank you!

Tajma on

sandra on

Cute idea but the swaddled blanket and infant poses are….disturbing. I’m happy to see a older child getting a home though.

mama3 on

this is beautiful! God Bless.

Notquiteright on

Something just doesn’t seem right. I think that the photos should have been more age appropriate. I like that they are taking photos and sending an announcement, but to have him act like a newborn is creepy.

librababe on

That is quite precious and a sweet idea. πŸ™‚

My husband and I adopted our son 6 weeks before his 18th birthday and we never felt “cheated” out of his younger years because we have him for the rest of his life!

Carrow on

Definitely different, but certainly enduring and funny.

kristy on

I love this. : )

Denise on

Very cool idea. Congratulations

Beth Campbell on

That’s wonderful!! As the daughter of a man who grew up in foster care, I can only imagine how thrilled he would have been had he ever had a chance to do this with the family who raised him! Congratulations to the Higgins family!

Janet on

It would have been a really cute idea if he didn’t have on the lace leggings. That’s what is really confusing. I’ve never seen a baby boy in something like that, have you? They should of left that photo out or for the home photo albums…..just saying!

Anonymous on

What an amazing idea to do with young adults who get adopted! At first your like… What! but once you read the store behind the concept, it’s loving and careing. Congrats to your family!!

Betty on

Love it, it’s brilliant!!

Glojean on

After reading the article and crying, I thought what a special young man he is. Let’s not forget he is a teenager and they are embarrassed by a lot of things, but you can tell by the pics that he loves his Mom and new family.

Millie on

We live in an ugly word and the first thing on my mind after seeing this photos is that child molesters will have a blast with them! I am a foster parent of five siblings and have my own little boy. I understand the need and would like to adopt one day but I already have a biological child and that makes me last on the list. Even for a special needs child!

Maren on

I was adopted this touches my heart too sweet πŸ™‚

mimi on

i love it! it’s funny and heartwarming at the same time.

H. Dix on

This is so beautiful. Whether an adoptive family has a child from birth or finds their child as a teenager, the love, pride, and joy they feel at becoming a family is the same. Like biological parents they want to celebrate the additions to their family. These kids have a forever family. God bless these people for keeping siblings together. Sniff, Excuse me, I have something in my eyes. πŸ™‚

Poorkid on

How stupid! Humiliate the boy right away! He’ll SO hate these photos later!

guest on

That’s just awesome!

marn on

this is sweet but kinda weird.

Mandy on

I think this is such a great idea & it is so nice to hear of people adopting older children instead of babies. If I ever adopted, it would be an older child. They need good homes too.

Nena on

At least they are potty trained and no late night feedings or uo all night crying

I think that is sooo sweet!!! One of my best friends had a daughter at 18 years old. Her little girl was never raised by the father. When she got married her new husband fought really hard to be able to legally adopt the little girl, it took five years to finally happen. When it did they sent out “birth” announcements with “it’s a girl.” Photos of her and him together. It was beautiful! It is wonderful to show more stories like this about adoption! Congrats to the beautiful family!

I love this!

Beth on

Aww, that is so sweet. At first I didn’t read it and I thought it was making fun of the ridiculous and over top way people announce they are pregnant or what gender the baby is, but these are very cute and he is a good sport going along with it for his mama!

Ann on

that is really cool!

bethany on

This is so sweet. Older children being adopted many times feel they are not special. This is a great way for these children to feel loved and adored. I hope more people will be encouraged to adopt.

this is to weird.. and to go viral and subject your child to every molester in this world who would love to get a hand on this pix.

you should be ashamed of yourself..

Celebrate your adoption another way.

Sweetest Announcement I have ever seen

Patti on

what a great story….they made him feel even more special by doing this. Adoption is hard on kids especially older ones, they sometimes feel like they never fit in.

AllisonJ on

i love it! Amazing! These photos made me so happy.

nacho mamma on

Happy for him and his new forever home!

Tina on

What a sweet thing to do. Great idea.

Cat on

These pictures are more than just a welcoming into a family and a way to celebrate a new beginning. They display pure beauty. He may be 13 but the pictures capture the same as if he were 13 days old… Innocence. It doesn’t matter the age of a child that a parent brings home for the first time, it matters the love and devotion that accompanies such an event. Congrats to everyone and those pictures will forever be followed with the overwhelming love they all felt during that period of their lives:) very cool

Anonymous on

Gorgeous. Love Love Love!!!!!!!!!

tomeka denton on

you can actually take his picture to an photography image expert that can do a reverse process of a missing child composite instead of birth to adult you can do adult to birth……to see if you can come up with with some awesome baby pics!!!!! wish you the best!!!! LOVE!!!

Adoption is wonderful but….the pictures are just a bit well…strange for a child of that age…before you leap on’s just my opinion…..

cris on

Clever! As an adoptive Mom I had the good fortune of getting my daughter as a newborn however; I dont care how old they are I think you should celebrate them in the way you would any other child. Perfect! Just Perfect!

omg- love it!

my, what a BIG and tall baby!

Adoption is SO important- and it’s so important to celebrate your child no matter how old they are or werre when they came into your life! I truly believe people are destined to adopt on purpose- it takes someone very special to take someone else in and make them a forever part of your family. Just beautiful- and funny too πŸ˜‰

Jenn on

And anonymous AKA Jackie- how in the heck is this child porn? Weirdo…

Rosemarie Roche on

How very cool are these parents?! What a lovely idea! These kids are very luck indeed!:)

Carol on

this is sad. You can’t duplicate the beauty of a newborn by making a teenager look so ridiculous. She abused her mom role by making him do this for her. Kids are not toys, she should have chosen an age appropriate announcement. This is creepy and suggests she needs some kind of attention.

meme on

I can’t believe the 13 year old agreed to do this!
