He’s here!

Kara DioGuardi and husband Mike McCuddy welcomed a son on Thursday, Jan. 31 in Los Angeles, a rep for the former American Idol judge confirms to PEOPLE.

Greyson James Carroll McCuddy was born to the couple via gestational surrogate at 1:01 p.m. He weighs 8 lbs., 10 oz. and measures 20¾ inches long.

One of his middle names, Carroll, honors DioGuardi’s late mother.

The happy news of Greyson’s birth comes after years of heartbreak for songwriter DioGuardi, 42, who endured miscarriages and failed IVF attempts while she and McCuddy explored other paths to parenthood, including adoption and surrogacy.

DioGuardi recently told PEOPLE that she could not be more grateful to their surrogate: “She’s given us an incredible gift.”

Good Job un-named but glorious surrogate bio mom! I hope the separation between you and your baby is not too hard on you. We honor you for your priceless gift to women who cannot conceive or carry to term.

Congrats to you both! Loads of joy and happiness for years to come!

Eagle, you seem to have misunderstood. The article clearly says “gestational surrogate”, which means that the woman who carried the baby was not the biological mother. The baby was conceived using either Kara’s egg or a donor egg, but the surrogate was not the donor.

Congrats on finally becoming a mommy! It will be the best and most amazing thing you will ever do! Cute name, I really like Greyson.

I don’t think @eagle is entirely wrong, @michelle. What you said is technically true, the baby has no genetic connection to the surrogate but I think it’s possible for the surrogate to have formed a bond or connection w/ the unborn child regardless. So I imagine that despite not having that genetic connection, it would still be an emotional thing to carry, deliver and then go home w/out the baby you’ve carried. (even though it was the deal and surrogates know that, etc. I’m not minimizing the legal/realistic aspect at all) I think it’d just be human nature to possibly have a hard time adjusting. But I think surrogates are amazing!
