Beverley Mitchell’s Blog: Is There Anything Better than Belly Watching?

Please give a warm welcome to our newest celebrity blogger, Beverley Mitchell!

Best known for her role as Lucy Camden on the long-running drama 7th Heaven, the actress most recently played Kaitlin O’Malley on The Secret Life of the American Teenager.

Mitchell, 32, and husband Michael Cameron have announced that they’re expecting their first childa daughter! — in April.

You can find her on Facebook, WhoSay and Twitter @beverleymitchel.

In her latest blog, Mitchell admits that the first trimester wasn’t her favorite — but that the kicks of the second trimester more than made up for it.

(Also, is her husband the only one who speaks to the baby through their wife’s belly button?)

So I have to admit — at the beginning, I was not digging this pregnancy thing. I was truly struggling with the complete and utter loss of control of my body, mind and everything else. The first trimester — and even a good portion of the second trimester — was just, “Ehh.” I was tired. I was cranky. My already weird food aversions got even weirder. All in all, it was tougher than I thought it would be.

The hard part is when people ask you how you’re doing. You smile and say, “It’s all so wonderful” when really all I wanted to say was, “It is weird, my body feels foreign and who knows what’s happening in my head because of all the hormones?” But I smile and say how excited I am (and I truly am excited, I am just not loving this portion — I actually think it kind of sucks!) and carry on.

I find it rare for a pregnant woman to just say it like it is for fear of seeming ungrateful for the gift that is about to present itself, but let’s be honest — it is not all roses and rainbows!

Then come the kicks. The most beautiful thing about pregnancy is when you first start to feel your little human move. Honestly, it wiped away all the frustration from the previous months and instead holds me absolutely captivated by the simplest of things: belly watching. I often find myself lying down and just staring at my bump in complete awe as I watch my little angel move. It truly is remarkable; it is so hard to believe that there really is a little person in there.

I know this has been happening since the beginning of time, but until you feel it first-hand, it is truly one of the most incredible things. Every morning, Michael and I find ourselves lying in bed sharing the miracle that is her morning kicks. My husband talks to her and lays his hand on my belly. Funnily enough, she responds pretty much immediately — she has certainly grown to know who Dad is and rewards him with a fist pump on a regular basis.

It’s also quite a trip when I realize that this little human has a mind of her own. She jumps when startled, moves as she pleases and she is definitely taking on some likes and dislikes. For instance, Baby Girl loves chocolate — she practically does somersaults after my chocolate-chip cookie.

Baby also is not a fan of my current pants selection. (You see, I still haven’t brought myself to buy maternity pants. I’m already seven months along and don’t see the point in spending all that money for just a few months, but I digress.) Anyway, she definitely sends a message when she is feeling cramped and doesn’t like to sit for too long. She sends me right to my room to put on my favorite Bird & Vine sweatpants — they do not apply any pressure to the belly and she seems to be a fan, as am I.

Needless to say, it has taken a few months and few phone calls from worried friends, but now I get it. Pregnancy is truly a miracle and I am utterly blessed and so madly in love with this little human already.

And watching my husband, who is so attentive and loving, rub my belly and speak to the baby makes my heart melt every time. He is already an incredible father and she isn’t even here yet! Isn’t it funny how men seem to think that your belly button is the direct line of communication to the baby? It honestly makes me laugh every time. It couldn’t be cuter see the man that you love speak into your belly button to tell the baby the plans for the day! Just pure unwavering love.

Now that I’m at 30 weeks, pregnancy has taken a new turn yet again. First frustration, then pure bliss and now as I embark on my third trimester, the true realization that baby will be here soon. Time is running out and in just three more months we will have our little bundle in our arms.

At the beginning, 40 weeks feels like a long time, then all of a sudden you’re where am I now and have no idea where the time has gone. Especially when you are the clever one who decided that an entire house renovation is a good idea after finding out you’re pregnant… I tend to go big — no small projects for this girl.

Lucky for me, I have the most patient and organized husband a girl can ask for. He has taken on this ginormous project I have laid in front of him (I can’t help with most of it because I am a bit off-balance with my growing bump) and there is no doubt that we will get it done just in time for Baby Girl to arrive!

So I’ll be sure to give you an update next time with the progress of the complete home renovation and the exciting adventure of planning the nursery. I have always had an idea of what I would want, but now that April is getting closer, it’s a bit overwhelming. There are so many cute choices! Can’t wait to get started, and don’t worry — I will definitely share the finished product.

Until then, don’t mind me — I’ll just be here staring at my belly in awe watching this precious little being kick and tumble. Leave me a comment below or send me a Tweet @beverleymitchel!

Your blog brings back suck great memories of my pregnancies. My kids are 8 and 4 yrs old now…seems so long ago…everything you wrote is so the truth! Finally a celebrity who doesnt “sugar coat” it! The throwing up, nausea, horomones, etc…sucks! but the end product is sooo worth it!

10 more weeks to go girl! Before you know it, your precious baby girl will be in your arms! Best of luck to you and your husband and baby girl!

Cute!! I loved watching my belly too, I even have a video of it that I sneakily watch when I’m missing being pregnant lol.

I hope the next 10-12 weeks goes smoothly for you and that the house comes together with time to spare!

Jen on

I love this post! You hit it on the head for how my emotions ran during my pregnancy! But nothing can prepare you for how great you’ll feel once the little one is here!

Romy on

sweet, but go buy 2 pairs of cute maternity pants! :) or borrow from a friend if you must

Julie on

Beverley, blessings to you as you and your husband await the arrival of your precious baby girl!!

I think a lot of ladies enjoy their first trimester. Everyone’s different but if you are one of the lucky ones who don’t get any symptoms, than the first trimester is a breeze!

Sandy on

It’s so funny- the nesting thing! Some clean and clean, others change the furniture around and clean out all the closets, she is not only redoing one room, but the whole house?!!!

How funny but I know the feeling of wanting everything *perfect* when the little one arrives!

Carlee on

Loved reading this. Made me truly happy to read how happy YOU are.

I continuously go to your twitter feed throughout the day to see what you’re up to because I admire you. Funny, you and Jessica Biel (and JT) were in my dream last night actually. It was a good dream! We were all BFFs! I so wish I was. I adore you and Jessica more than you know.

I’m so excited for you and can’t wait to read more of your blogs. You’re going to be a great mother, and I know I that because of how great of a person and actor you are. Can’t wait for you to have your precious baby girl and for pictures to come out! I only wish I knew you so I could babysit….. :)

best of luck. Xoxo

Beverley, love your blog posts. They bring back a lot of memories for me. I’m 55 and my two sons are adults.

I wish all the best to you and your husband. And, I must say, your hubby is HANDSOME! You two make a cute couple. Can’t wait to see photos later after your daughter is born!

Hi Beverley, Congrats! I love watching 7th heaven and you will be a great mum!

lovely123 on

I really enjoyed my pregnancies. I am slim, and my co-workers would ask if it was uncomfortable in my situation (gained over 70 pounds with each pregnancy). I always said, “It really is not uncomfortable until the baby comes out”.

lovely123 on

My idea of “nesting” was to do as much gardening as possible. Including trimming the trees and the bushes. Doing it at 8.5 months pregnant.

kate on

I MISS those kicks! I have two sweet girls and those kicks were my favorite part for sure! you will miss those SOOOO much – savor this time – it is so special! Congrats on having a baby girl – I don’t know boys, I’m sure they are wonderful too, but having two girls, I can tell you from experience – you are one lucky mom!

BUT gotta share one piece of advice – those last 10 weeks can feel long – GO buy yourself two pairs of maternity pants – a fave pair of jeans and some comfy yoga type pants – you will enjoy them after the baby comes out too for a few weeks…well worth the money!

Congrats to you, Beverley!

I love reading about your new adventure in life. My mom and I have been a fan of 7th Heaven for years and loved watching you play Lucy. I cannot help but make some correlations with the things you wrote here to your character on the show. I am very happy for you and your family, many blessings!

Very happy for them and glad we are hearing about her. Love her blogs. Keep them coming!

Reminds me of my “hands and knees” scrubbing the floors phase. Omg…. happens to all of us :) really funny when the dads to be start scrambling and nesting with car seats baby furniture etc!!!

Congrats Beverly and hubby! I loved reading your blog. I own all the 7th heaven seasons and miss that show tremendously! I loved my DVR so if I wasn’t able to watch 7th heaven on time I still got to watch it when I got home. Good luck with your new bundle of joy! Being a mom is priceless.

May you have much joy in the birth of your new daughter. She will bring much love and you be a great person that bring many hours of love and excitement. We pray that everything will go well. We know as grandparents ourselves. May God bless you in every way.

I remember my husband talking to my belly too – I think both of my girls knew his voice well by the time they were born. My daughters are 18 and 20 now, but I remember that time so well. The best part is the end – when they hand you that baby! Congratulations!

fanofboardwalkempire on

I really enjoyed your posting and reading your blog. I appreciate your honesty about what your pregnancy has been like for you. Glad you are happy and enjoying the kicks!

Wishing you a great delivery!

H&M have some really cute maternity pants that are really affordable and the best part is they don’t look like maternity pants. I love my pants!

mary on

As someone who hasn’t given birth, I often find it hard to determine when someone is providing an accurate description of what being pregnant is like….I’m too old to give birth anymore… So, thanks for providing what sounds like a very honest and enjoyable bit of information about the whole process. God bless to you and all of the little ones you and your husband may have over the years!

Jenn on

I have twin girls that are 18 months now! It seems like so long ago I was pregnant with them, but yet at the same time it doesn’t seem like its been a year and a half since I had them! I remember laying and watching my belly and waiting for them to move and thinking how amazing it was as it was happening!!! They are the best part of my day every day! Enjoy every moment you can with yours!!!

BBB on

I’m a fan of her writing style!

URMean on

You are a mean idiot Jen, you read this entire blog and thought to yourself, I’m gonna be arrogant and not let this woman express the joy of her first pregnancy by telling her that she’s foolish for being happy, shame on you! You must lead an empty life, very sad that you need to bring others off their cloud of happiness.

Anonymous on

You’re a bitch Jen.

dontmindme on

@Jen- no one asked you to read this blog and NO not everyone has experienced pregnancy!! She was merely writing her feelings. If you do not like it, don’t read it, no need to comment.

I think the blog was great and many can relate to that first trimester- feeling sick/out of wack second trimester- finally getting comfortable and loving it third trimester- swollen and ready to meet baby :) congrats to Beverley and her Hubby!!

Beverley, I am so happy for you! You look wonderful! Best wishes & I can’t wait to see pics of the baby. I’m watching reruns od 7th Heaven & loving it!! Take care & God Bless! :)

Kathy on

I do agree that her pregnancy really does have similarities as her characters’ pregnancy on 7th Heaven. As soon as I read the part about the maternity pants it brought me back to the episode where Lucy did not want to wear maternity pants. And she seems very crafty as her character was. Love the blog & still watch 7th Heaven reruns on GMC.. Congtats!

Katelyn on

LOVE HER! She is going to be a great mom! I loved her as Lucy on 7th Heaven :)

Michael Hester on

Congratulations Beverly and your husband on the announcement of you having a little girl. If she is as pretty as you, your husband will have to fight off the gentlemen that comes calling on her when she is a teenager, like your tv daddy did you. We all love Seventh Heaven and watch it everyday,

letitia on

I watched you grow up on 7thheaven andI have a copy of your 1st cd, that you did (not sure if there was more than 1) and now you are going to bea mom.WOW, it seems like yesterday you was a kid yourself. Your gonna b a great mom! Congrats to the bothof you!

Hi Beverly, your posts bring back fond memories for me,my youngest just turned 31 ,lol hardly a baby but she will always be my baby and my oldest is 33 so just sit back and enjoy this miracle thats about to unfold. It’s a blessing to have a baby girl, there are so many more choices for everything girley when theres not so much in the boy dept.Just enjoy each minute and milestone because they go by so quickly.Enjoy and God Bless you and your growing family.

K.C. on

Beverley, this is so thrilling for you! I was one of those disgusting fortunate ones who had pretty smooth pregnancies, both times: minimal nausea, NO cookie-tossing, hardly ever tired,..I felt great! I didn’t go all out with maternity clothes, either: my broomstick skirts not only lasted both pregnancies right up to the end, but I STILL wear them (and my “babies” are now 10 and 8)! I can’t wait to find out what your name choice will be: PLEASE don’t go on wonky on the name! I look forward to reading more. P.S. Our whole family still plays your CD frequenty.

How fun, I too am Due end of April, just hit 29 weeks yesterday. So excited for you…This is my second pregnancy and it was all but fairy and beautiful unlike my first one, a boy, that pregnancy was pure pleasure comapared to this one. Good Luck and continue to keep us posted.

Stormy on

Hi , I have been a fan for years still watch 7th Heaven !
I have 2 little ones of my own and remember all to well
the awe inspiring moments of each pregnancy . You are
so right it is a miracle and an awesome one at that !
Good luck with the renovation I know how you feel
I thought that it would be a grand idea to move my
entire life and all the contents ONE month prior to
my little one’s arrival !

Macrina on

Beverley, I hated being pregnant, it was the worse 9 months of my life, but in the end my beautiful daughter was worth all the agony I went thru. I honestly don’t think I would do it again, for fear, I will feel like that again.

Lizzy10 on

Congratulations. The belly watch is the most fun, and if you have a really active little one, it makes for interesting get together’s with friends. Everyone liked to see the “stomach surfing” my first baby did, and as you get closer to your due date, one sigh can make people jump! Good luck with the last trimester.

Jennifer on

I’m so happy for you, and especially happy that you understand what a privilege it is to be pregnant. I was unable to get pregnant, so it’s nice to know that you are so aware of what a huge blessing it is. I wish only the best for you and your husband, and of course, the new little one about to arrive!

Jennifer on

She is a lucky woman. I never have a child in my life. It makes me so sad.

lindsey5103 on

Our little girl used to shift at night so she could feel her dad’s back when we were cuddled up in bed. I thought it was the sweetest thing.

Memphis on

Hey Jen in your eagerness to leave a nasty reply I guess you missed the part where she said : “I know this has been happening since the beginning of time, but until you feel it first-hand, it is truly one of the most incredible things.”

She isn’t acting like she the first and ONLY woman to experience it, she was simply sharing the joy she’s feeling …something – I wager- a joyless, Grinch like you doesn’t understand or do very often.

Sandra on

This was so refreshing to read. I’m 7 mo. pregnant, due in early May with my first baby (a boy) and have been going through a ‘rollercoaster’ with this pregnancy myself. While you are so grateful for this growing miracle, the first trimester pretty much sucks. You don’t even show, yet you have all these wacky side effects and your emotions are just uncontrollable. I’ve seriously struggled with depression during this. Just like Beverly, we are also in the middle of a complete house remodel! We’ve been living in a hotel for the last two weeks, since we basically have no bathroom…. It’s a trip! Beverly, thank you for sharing your story! Wishing you a happy rest of your pregnancy.

Todd on

NO,NO,NO, there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BETTER THAN pregnant belly watching!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
