Prince William and Kate Expecting First Child

Prepare for a new royal.

Prince William and Kate Middleton are expecting their first child, the palace has confirmed.

“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby,” read the statement released Monday. “The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news.”

“The Duchess was admitted this afternoon to King Edward VII Hospital in Central London with Hyperemesis Gravidarum,” the official word added. “As the pregnancy is in its very early stages, Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter.”

William is with her at the hospital, and the morning sickness is “acute,” the palace says.

The couple have made no secret of their desire to have start a family. Prince William said in their joint interview on the day they announced their engagement that they’d move cautiously “one step at a time.”

“We’ll sort of get over the marriage first and then maybe look at the kids,” he told ITN. “But obviously we want a family so we’ll have to start thinking about that.”

Now the thinking is over and the speculation that has gripped royal watchers can end.

If it is anything like the couple’s wedding, which was watched so intently and by hundreds of millions of viewers, the excitement is bound to build to the big day of the new royal’s birth. And, like William’s in 1982, the birth will be heralded not just by headlines at home but around the world.

And, even if William and Kate’s baby is a girl, she can expect to inherit the throne from her father, irrespective of whether any other child the royal couple has is a boy. Until a recent rule change was signalled, boys took precedence.

One thing is certain: They have a wonderful palace home to move their family into when the baby is growing up. The couple will be relocating into the 20-room Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace in early 2013.

In the meantime, they are mainly based in a four bedroom farmhouse at an idyllic location on Anglesey, North Wales, so William can be to his base at RAF Valley, where he’s a search and rescue helicopter pilot.

YAY! And a big congratulations. What happy news, I couldn’t be more thrilled for them :–)

klutzy_girl on

EEEEEEEEEE! So exciting! Congratulations to them.

Wonder if they’ll name the baby after Diana if it’s a girl.

Angela on

How exciting! Although I had hyperemesis gravaderum for 5 months and was never hospitalized…the perks of being a royal!

anonymous on

Wow! Awesome news. Can’t wait to see the new prince or princess.

Shannon on

klutzy_girl I totally agree! A girl…maybe Diana Catherine Elizabeth. I would think William would want to honor his mother somehow, whether boy or girl. Maybe Spencer for a boy.

I know two people who have been hospitalized for Hyperemsis, it is attitudes like “must be nice to be a royal” that make it seem like it isn’t a real sickness. Some people get it so severe both their life and the baby are at risk because of severe hydration. One friend was getting IV’s weekly over half her pregnancy and spent several nights in the hospital, just because you were lucky enough to not have it quite so severe, don’t trivialize others who clearly have it very bad. It is completely miserable based on watching my friend go thru it, she was in a dark, dark place because of it.

I hope she is ok… this is really exciting news!

Yay, I am so happy for them and I know they will be wonderful parents!! Congrats to William and Catherine. :)

AmandaC on

Very exciting news for them. I hope she can be left alone a little to enjoy this wonderful experience!

This is so exciting! Hope everything is ok and she feels better soon!

Cara on

Poor thing, hope it doesn’t last too long !

Big congratulations to them

I kinda hope it’s a girl, just so that she could be the first female to inherit the crown whether or not she has a younger brother in the future. Very cool. Also, is something with 20 bedrooms really considered an apartment?

lifeasahouse on

Congrats to them!! Given that she is already very thin, any loss of body weight with dehydration, etc could be very serious for her. I am sure that they are taking extra precautions though since she is a royal. I wonder if the announcement came sooner in the pregnancy than they would have normally announced because of the hospitalization. Regardless, congrats!

So excited to hear this news! I love this couple and am very happy for them. They seem very down-to-earth and have handled the media negatively well.

Congratulations and best wishes to William and Kate!

So it’s official? Yea! So happy for the royal family!

Oh god, brace yourselves for endless media speculation and truly disproportionate coverage given to this.

It’s lovely for them and their family and of course i wish her nothing but a healthy pregnancy and baby, but as with the royal wedding, nothing really justifies the amount of attention this news will receive.

OMG!! The BEST pregnancy to be heard of on here!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome!!!

Amy Peltier on

I loved hearing this news this morning! I momentarily dreamt they called me to design the nursery…then I snapped back to reality:)

Congrats to William and Kate! I also had severe morning sickness and it resulted in…twins! I lost 20 lbs and became dehydrated but once I knew it was b/c my body was creating two placentas, etc, I became less stressed and managed the illness better. No meds or hospitalization. I also had two little children to take care on top of the pregnancy. The good news is, once I hit 20 weeks, the illness subsided and I resumed eating normally again. Then gave birth to two full-term beautiful little girls!

I myself experienced Hyperemesis Gravidarum. It is awful. In fact I was put on a zophran pump and morphine for the extreme migraines along with hospitalization every other week. And I didn’t go anywhere without a ziplock baggie. Lol best of luck! I will say to the surprise of all the doctors, I had a healthy 7 pound baby although I only gained 5 pounds, this is after I gained the 7 pounds I had originally lost. So anything is possible with proper medical care.

poppykai on

Very exciting news for them. I hope Catherine feels better soon and the n/v doesn’t last the entire pregnancy. It will be interesting if it is twins because one of the children will lose the throne by only a matter of minutes! I am looking forward to hearing more about this pregnancy/birth/baby etc!

Cara on

Yay!! So happy for them!!! I am also kind of hoping they have a girl first just to put old traditions to rest. It would be cool to see the first female heir inherit the throne from her father. That would be amazing to see happen! Regardless, congrats! He/She will be beautiful!

rachael on

Wonderful news, they will make great, great parents!

I can only hope Kate gets a bit of breathing room during this pregnancy, wishing her all the best!!

Cammy on

Ha! Funny picture celebrity babies chose with the two holding a glass of wine! To celebrate, and maybe her last during her pregnancy!

Isabel on

There’s no special treatment because she’s a royal. The majority of cases are treated as a medical emergency because it often leads to dehydration and in other cases, worse. My friend couldn’t even keep water down and needed a nasogastric tube.

As for the name, if they have a girl, I doubt her first name would be Diana. All names have to be approved by the queen and I don’t see her giving her blessing.

She also wouldn’t be the first female to inherit the thrown from her father as Queen Elizabeth II inherited.

Isabel on

I meant to say Queen Elizabeth II inherited the thrown from her father, King George VI since he had no sons.

Amy on

I was so excited to hear that this is the real announcement this time! Can’t wait to see this family grow! Congrats!!!

lifeasahouse- That’s my guess, too (that the annoucement came out this soon because of the hospitilization). I’m sure they would have preferred to wait until the first trimester was over, but unfortunately there was probably no way the media wasn’t going to find out about her being hospitilized.

Anyway, I, too hope it’s a girl (and if it’s twins I hope that they’re either both girls or the first one born is a girl!) for the reasons others have stated. Also, I think it would be cool if William and Kate ultimately have two girls since Charles and Diana had two boys! :)

Anyway, I hope Kate feels better soon! I spent a good hour and a half or so throwing up every five minutes when I had the stomach flu last winter, and that was bad enough. I can only imagine what it must be like to be throwing up almost constantly (which I’ve read is the case with HG)!

Anonymous on

Isabel- No, but she WOULD be the first to inherit the throne even if she ends up with a younger brother or two!

traxie on

I so love that this announcement was accompanied by a photo of them both holding glasses of wine. That’ll help with the morning sickness!

Isabel on

Anonymous, that’s correct but the poster said she’d be the first in the British monarchy to inherit the thrown as a female and I mentioned that was incorrect since it’s happened with Queen Elizabeth.

taradawes on

Congratulations to them – that is sure to be one beautiful baby. Agree with @mary about getting sick of people acting like she just ended up in the hospital because she is a royal with just normal morning sickness. What she has is completely different – some people get it and don’t have to end up hospitalized, I had a friend who had it in her first pregnancy and they ended up giving her the pills that chemo patients take that made is so she literally couldn’t throw up. But I also know someone who had to be hospitalized early on because of it.

I hope they have a girl simply because they changed that archaic law of succession and it will be nice to see it enacted!

MollyF on

traxie: That picture is old, because Kate’s hair is different now. She has a different hair style now (she looks like Emily Deschanel.

I’m very happy for them and I have this feeling their going to have a girl. And I hope Kate gets better soon.

mg on

wow…she’s pregnant. No one has ever done that before! Here comes the snoozefest.

Sharon on

Aaaw i second that :)
