It’s a girl for Caterina Scorsone!

The Private Practice star and her husband, musician Rob Giles, welcomed their first child, daughter Eliza, on Friday, July 6 in Los Angeles, Scorsone tells PEOPLE exclusively.

The actress, 30, delivered her baby at home with the assistance of midwives.

“We couldn’t be more in love with her and are overflowing with gratitude for this beautiful miracle,” the couple tell PEOPLE.

Scorsone, who announced she was pregnant in February, plays Dr. Amelia Shepherd on the ABC medical drama, which will kick off its sixth season this fall.

Elisa on

indeed it’s a beautiful name! hehehe I’ve gotta say I love the name! besides she will have a normal name which is great for her…

Congratulations to them!! I bet it’s a very beautiful baby! amazing that this ending was different from the one on the show… it was so sad! at least it called the atention that brainless babies can help other babies to live, so their lives do have a meaning…

Elisa – how is it amazing that this ending was different than the one on the show?? What an incredibly odd thing to say.

Beautiful normal name, I love Caterina on PP.

Congratulations on the birth of Eliza! how wonderful for you and your family!

What a fantastic name :) I love the fact that Caterina had her baby at home with midwives. Midwives are common practice here in New Zealand, and do fantastic work! Loved Caterina’s storyline on PP this past season, can’t wait for it to return

Congrats Caterina and Rob, so excited to hear about a great home birth!

Shawna, the storyline on the show was a tragic one. Maybe amazing wasn’t the best word for Elisa to use, but I understand the “Thank God everything turned out well” sentiment. Actually I think it was heartless of the producers to put a pregnant actress through such a devastating storyline. Like a fisrt time parent doesn’t have enough to worry about.

Ach, I’ve been waiting for this announcement! Congratulations! And I love, love, love the fact that Caterina gave birth at home!

Shawna—-I thought the same thing Elisa did. It was the first thing that came to my mind…and how it had to play with her psyche *just a bit.* playing a pregnant women with a brainless baby while carrying her own….any normal human would have feelings about this.

Oh I love that name! And yes acting that storyline when she was having a baby in real life must have been rough. Going to work pregnant is tiring enough, but add on even more concerns for the baby’s well being, and the fact you have to cry during takes over and over again, and I you have one tough time ahead of you.

Congratulations to her and her husband!

Congratulations Caterina and Rob! I love your character on Private Practice. I don’t know how you did those pregnancy scenes during last season knowing the character’s baby would die soon after birth. It couldn’t have been easy, but you pulled it off. I am glad that you had a healthy baby. I hope that you and your husband enjoy parenthood.

Except for the story on Private Practice was made up and babies with anencephaly cannot be organ donors.

Congrats to them!

People always feel the eed to analyze other’s comments to the extreme and take them so far out of cotext. Elisa only meant she was happy for Caterina and Rob that they had such a miracle, as did I 2 months ago! The show is clearly fake, people get over yourselves…

Elisa was only saying how happy she is for them and their precious miracle, people get over yourselves and stop analyzing to death others’ comments!

Awwwwww!!! Congrats to them! Beautiful name!

Congrats to Caterina and Rob on their new daughter Eliza! I love the name and am glad to hear she is a healthy little girl! I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for Caterina to do Amelia’s storyline this season when she was pregnant herself! I’m sure it made her even more appreciative of giving birth to a healthy baby!

Eli- Why can’t babies with anencephaly be organ donors? The only organ they lack is their brain, and their other organs are usually perfectly formed and healthy.

Jillian on

Eli
They said on the show that the child couldn’t technically be a donor. That was the controversy. Nothing was made up. They were suppose to wait for her to die. The character wanted to do the surgery before that knowing he would die. At least that’s how I remember it

Congratulations! I wonder if My Fair Lady was the inspiration for the baby’s name…

Congrats to the family. Love the name Eliza. Happy to read that they gave their child a normal name.
