Kerri Strug Is a New Mom

Olympic gold medalist Kerri Strug has a new, very special title: Mom!

The gymnast — who won the hearts of the country with her courageous vault in the 1996 Games — welcomed a son, Tyler William Fischer, on March 1.

Tyler was 7 lbs., 1 oz. at birth, which is quite notable considering his mother is 4’10″. “For me, he was large!” she jokes.

He is the first child for Strug, 34, and her husband, attorney Robert Fischer III. And the experience of having him, says the former gymnast, was not unlike the experience of training for the Olympics — and then actually being there.

“Everyone tells you, ‘When you have a child, you’ll understand,’” Strug tells PEOPLE.

“It’s kind of like my gymnastics training when people said, ‘Dreams do come true, anything’s possible.’ You hear these things and you really want to believe them, but you don’t quite get it until you go through it.”

“And it’s the same with Tyler. I understand it now, the immediate love.”

No word yet on whether Tyler will accompany his mom to this summer’s Olympic Games in London, but Strug will be there, working with Hilton HHonors Support the Dream, where fans can send their good wishes directly to members of Team USA.

Strug and Fisher were married in April 2010.

For much more on baby Tyler (including whether Mom wants him to be a gymnast, too) and exclusive photos, check back with PEOPLE.com on Thursday.

She gave birth three months ago!!! That makes it old news. What’s with the exclamation point and headline like it just happened? SMH

cn tower on

charli, what does smh mean? i’m not up to speed on all the latest text abbrieviations.

Barely 7 lbs is not “notable” even at her height. I understand her “to me he’s huge” joke, we joked all the time that our kids were taller than me before they were a year old, but People saying the weight is a “notable” size is ridiculous.

I like that she kept it quiet and didn’t run for headlines during pregnancy and birth. It’s refreshing.

Meg on

Yes, she gave birth 3 months but it sounds like she’s just announcing it now.

donna on

nice to see a new mom take time to enjoy with her newborn without selling pictures to the highest bidder…also nice to see a new baby with a normal name…congrats to Keri, her husband and their new baby

Jessica on

so her name is now kerri fisher? i love it!

Courtney on

She is obviously a very private person, and it was probably just announced because of the upcoming olympics, especially if she is involved with them in any way.

Jac on

Funny I thought 8 lbs 7 ounces was tiny!!

Traci on

Congratulations Kerri on the birth of your son Tyler William.

Excuse me but 7lbs 1oz is big for a little person such as Kerri at 4’10.

Kerri Fisher, just like Carrie Underwood, Carrie Fisher. It’s great.

Enjoy your little boy and to all the ones with your nonsense comments can jump off a boat.

Terri on

I agree with Traci. 7 lbs. 1 oz is big. I’m 5′ 0 and my daughter was 9 lbs 12 oz. so i can relate with Kerri. Congrats to the new mom and her hubby. :)

cn tower- smh = shake my head. So Charli is shaking her head at people magazine for reporting “old news” as “breaking news”. Even though it’s not as serious as she thinks it is.

Congratulations to Kerri! I remember being 8 yrs-old and watching her vault performance at my families hotel room in Disneyland!

Why is it necessary to pick apart every single word, statement and punctuation mark…I mean honestly–are some of us so bitter and angry that we can’t simply read this birth announcement and say oh how sweet, she had a baby!

Congrats to Keri and her hubby–I, too, remember watching that fateful vault all those years ago. I bet he’s an adorable little peanut :)

Tee on

Wow, this was a shock! Congratulations, Kerri! That now makes 4 members of the 96 team that are Moms!

The constant critical statements, rude comments and hateful retorts are getting so wearing! 7lbs 1 oz is a nice sized baby for anyone, let alone someone Kerr’s size. It is considered “average” so what’s with the snotty comments? What in the world is this–”my baby’s better than your kid!”? Don’t get rude, then claim, “It’s an opinion, and everyone has a right to one!”; why do you posters think it’s just fine to say something rude, then claim it’s just your opinion? Would you do that to someone’s face? How would you feel if someone said it to you? Sheesh.

Congratulations, Kerri! Glad to hear the good news about your sweet baby, and still remember your “Golden Moment”!

Meredith on

Congratulations Kerri!! I still remember watching that vault, my favorite Olympic memory!!

Oh good Lord Charli.
