Melissa Joan Hart: I Prepped and Planned for Pregnancy

05/16/2012 at 05:00 PM ET

Melissa Joan Hart‘s baby on the way already has her beat.

“[I’m] really exhausted. I don’t know if it’s [from taking care of] the two older ones, I don’t know if it’s because I’m older … but I feel so tired all the time,” the actress, 36, told PEOPLE at the Monday premiere of What to Expect When You’re Expecting in Hollywood, Calif.

“I’ve been in bed at 8:30 every night. I tell my kids, ‘Go put yourselves in bed. I gotta go to sleep.'”

But while she recognizes age may play a factor in her third pregnancy, Hart — who is mom to sons Mason Walter, 6, and Braydon Hart, 4 — did her part to prepare for the challenge.

“I was in really good shape before I got pregnant with this one,” she says. “I tried to set myself up. For about a year I made sure I took the right vitamins and didn’t take artificial sweeteners. I did take some precautions.”

Now in her second trimester, Hart has begun to feel the baby move inside her belly. And while she’s loving the “gentle” flutters for now, the Melissa & Joey star fears for her future.

“I feel like it’s going to be a strong baby,” she explains, “[but] if the kicks get stronger, I don’t know if I can handle it.”

But her little one’s moves don’t look like they’ll be slowing down anytime soon; Big brother Brady is already intent on teaching his boxing skills to the baby.

“The other day he was explaining to my belly how to do boxing. He was like, ‘Listen, here’s what you’re going to do. You’re going to go right, left, uppercut. Right, left,'” the mom-to-be says with a laugh.

After two strikingly different approaches to motherhood — she and husband Mark Wilkerson gave their eldest “so much attention” as a baby, which proved hard to repeat with their second — Hart is hopeful she will savor each second with the upcoming addition.

“Things like, ‘What’s this letter? What’s this color? What does a duck say?’ With Brady we kind of blurred over that because we had Mason, too,” she explains. “I hope with this one that we’ll be able to go back to really focusing on the little things.”

OMG when is she due??? She looks so big already! I’m shocked at how fast she popped.

sylvia on

TwinMommy on

LOVE her!!!

Cortney on

Love her! I dont think she is having twins…Remember how big she got with Mason?

Anonymous on

sylvia- Where did you read that? She hasn’t said when she’s due.

Anyway, I have to admit that her comment about telling her kids to put themselves in bed makes me feel bad for the boys. At their ages, she or Mark should still be tucking them in at night!

Also, I’m confused as to how she thinks they’ll be able to “get back to focusing on the little things”. I would think that would be even harder with two older children than with one. But maybe she’s referring to the fact that both boys are a little older than Mason was when Brady was born, meaning they won’t need as much attention as Mason did?

Cortney- I was just thinking the same thing! She got pretty big with Brady as well, if memory serves.

Hoping it’s a girl – feel like it might be Boy #3.

Sylvia, she has not said her due date.

I took the “put yourself to bed comment,” as a joke. Based on how it was written an her humor.

Mia, she isn’t hoping for a girl, what she said, so why would you? That’s weird.

Britt on

do you really have to stop eating artificial sweeteners when pregnant? my diet coke lol

Britt on

Artificial sweeteners? Really??

geez people on

Geez people! I think she meant the bedtime thing as a joke and really the sweetner thing?? I would NEVER give my baby a diet coke so why is it a big deal she wanted to avoid artificial sweetners while pregnant? Good for her. Love her and hope People does a spread on her like her first baby!

Actually artificial sweeteners ARE bad for your baby, especially Aspartame which can cause cancer and premature labor. Diet drinks are pretty bad for your body and your baby.

Wow people read in to so much they don’t know…she may have told her kids ot put themselves to bed as a joke…really! I have a 3 yr old and many nights I’m in bed at 830 too 🙂

Where is hubby?! Let him take care of putting the little ones to bed. I don’t think a 4 & 6 year olds should be left to go to bed by themselves! They need to brush teeth, be read a story, kissed and tucked in.

If possible, take a short nap during the day. It really makes a difference.

OMG people you take things so literally! Can you not tell that she’s joking?! Dear God if this is what the human race has come to, then just get rid of me now. I cannot stand the stupidity!

Come on she was joking around! I have 3 boys (and it is great by the way, never was I hoping for a girl, just a healthy baby) and it was exhausting being pregnant with 2 other kids running around. They were 2 and 3 yo while I was pregnant and there were many times I collapsed into bed.

As for enjoying all the little things with a newborn, I know exactly what she is saying. With my two older ones so close together, it was so hard to appreciate all the little baby things with the second. With my third baby, my two older boys are in preschool in the morning, which gives me a lot more one on one time with the littlest one.

She looks great!

Yaa! MJH is my favorite celebrity! She is such a great role model for young women about how to do it right!!!!! All blessings to her family!! 🙂

Oh for Pete’s sake, yes it was a joke. Why are people so defensive? LOL!

I like her so much better than Hillary Duff. She seems so down to earth.

I hope it’s a girl! I have three big brothers and they’re so playful and protective! Congrats Melissa!:)

I am constantly surprised by the sheer stupidity of the people commenting here. Are there really that many utterly clueless people out there? I love MJH and wish her the best. Hoping she gets her girl. on

I love her attitude; it is great to savor every moment…when you can! It is also good to have humor with the rest, as she does! Can’t wait to read about what she ends up having! Good luck to the rest of her pregnancy!

Love her on Melissa and Joey..Congrats on the new baby..Like others said, really people? I read it as a joke that she makes the kids get ready for bed on their own..When my grandson was 6, he wanted to go to bed on his own, so what’s the big deal if hers does?

sylvia on

if u look under due dates and birthdays and go to semptmeber it say mellisa excpting third child.

Show me one large, public study showing that artificial sweeteners are harmful. Also, the study has to be testing the amount that a human could ingest. The equivalent of 1,000 Diet Cokes a day does not count.

sylvia- That’s just a guess on PEOPLE’s part. I’ve been coming to this site a long time, and when a celeb doesn’t give their due date (as is the case with Melissa), they make a guess based on various “clues” the celeb gives (for example, Melissa has said that she’s in her second trimester, which tells us that she’s somewhere between four and six months along….with four months being the most likely since celebs generally announce their pregnancies at the three month mark, and Melissa announced hers last month).

Based on what I just said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Melissa IS due in September, but my point is that the date on the PEOPLE calendar is pure speculation at this point, as she hasn’t given a due date.

About the artifical sweetners thing….They definitely aren’t the best for you. My mother used to drink diet soda all the time, thinking that was better than loading her body with all the sugar that’s in the regular stuff. She learned pretty quickly, however, that she was wrong. Everytime she drank diet soda, she would get extremely cranky and irritable (and I mean extremely. It was to the point that she was almost a different person when she drank diet soda).

Suspecting the aspartame in the soda was the culprit (as she also got the cranky spells when she drank or ate other things with aspartame in them), she switched to regular soda and cut out all other drinks and foods with that particular artifical sweetner in them. The result? No more cranky spells!

Bottomline: If aspartame can affect your mind like that, I hate to think of what it can do to the rest of your body!

I can understand what she means with focusing more on the baby. I have 3 kids. 5, 3 and 1. First baby syndrome had me focusing a lot on the baby, 2nd baby syndrome had me wishing he would grow up faster, but 3rd baby who was is my last baby, I wanted to savour the babyness for as long as possible.

I keep confusing Melissa Joan Hart with Alicia Silverstone.

I believe she was joking, too. But in saying that, a six-year-old and a four-year-old are quite capable of putting themselves to bed if the need arises. When I was pregnant with my daughter, my eldest son who was five at the time was able to get his, and his 3-year-old brother’s breakfast when I was constantly throwing up in the first 3 months.

Hopefully it’s a girl for them, i guess that’s why they want the sex of the baby to be a surprise, but i think she will have another BOY!

I find it funny that people think that it’s outrageous that she cut out artificial sweeteners and mentioned her kids going to sleep by themselves.

First of all, she was joking about them putting themselves to sleep, but second of all, children do not NEED to be tucked in and read to. Haha. Some o you make it sound like the children will just be so irreparably harmed if it doesn’t happen. Hilarious to me because I don’t think I was read to or tucked in after about age 3. My mother was a single parent and ended up being deployed and my grandparents had never practiced anything like that past that age.

Also more power to her for wanting to contentiously change something about her diet to wlp her child. I do my best to at least not eat the most processed and artificially boosted foods. In my opinion, certain foods and products have not been around long enough for us to know the effects of. People are allowed to be cautious of eating substances that are man-made, as opposed to foods that occur more naturally. It’s why I choose to eat regular cheese instead of the sandwich singles “cheese product”, why I’d drink simply orange before sunny D. Makes sense to me…

Hollyweird is all about the women being a size zero and MJH is beautiful with her curves. I love how they style her on Melissa and Joey, her hair and clothes are always spot on! They do a good job with Lenox on the show too.
