The suspension of the six year old is really an over the top reaction, I mean, does he even understand what he was singing/reciting? I bet he doesn’t. A better “punishment” would have been to talk to him, ask him what it means, and explain to him why it’s not a good idea to recite it in school, open up the topic up discussion in class (without pointing any fingers at the student in question). Honestly, young kids say inappropriate things all the times without knowing that it is inappropriate or why, and I don’t see suspending him and calling it “sexual harassment” as a sensible measure, particularly if he doesn’t understand why (which could very well be the case if they haven’t discussed it with him as he’s only six). I have worked in kindergarten/pre-school, and I have heard kids that age say things like that, and none of them actually had a clue what it meant!

I agree that the suspension and harassment reason is over the top. But I don’t agree that a six year old doesn’t know what sexy means. We had this conversation with my nephew, about this song, and why he couldn’t sing it. He knew what it meant. My children know as well. Children know far more than I did at that age.

You are right Mary, I forgot that my experience stems from a non-English speaking country.
