Argh! Being a parent and not your Childs friend is hard! It would be so much easier and more harmonious to be a friend, but right now this is not the time. At least that is what I believe.

Our oldest is a girl, she is 19 and I tell her respect is earned and I remind her all the time I am always here for her no matter what but I am your parent not friend. I will admit that I have felt sad or jealous when I hear other parents talk about their friendship with their children or when my daughter talks about so and so had a drinking party with her mom and friends, but I also know the problems these parents have faced as their “friends”. Some of these kids have no respect for other adults and I think some of it comes from their parents parenting style.

I have learned my parenting tips from my mom who was a great mom, (no longer with us) and no we were not friends while I was in school but we were best friends when ‘I grew up’ so I know something great will, or at least I hope will happen when my daughter comes into her own. By the way she is a great kid, just a stupid teen at times.

Good for you Mary! And I agree with you.🙂 I am a young mommy with two little one (2yrs and 4mos) and totally plan on being a parent not a friend. And like you, that’s what my mom always reminded me. And we butted heads like crazy in the teen years. And I was jealous of others who had “cool” moms, but now that I’m “grown up”, we are the very best of friends. I’d be lost without her and she reminds me often how proud of me she is.🙂 I have a feeling you’ll be in the same boat with your daughter down the road!
