Jared Padalecki‘s new role: Superdad!

The Supernatural star and his wife Genevieve Cortese welcomed a son, Thomas Colton Padalecki, on Monday, March 19, his rep confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

Baby boy weighed in at 8 lbs., 6 oz.

After announcing that they were expecting, Padalecki, 29, and Cortese, 31, requested fans contribute to St. Jude’s Research Hospital in lieu of gifts.

Thus far, fans have raised over $40,000 for the hospital, and the couple plans to match the final total.

Padalecki wed former Supernatural costar Cortese in February 2010 in Sun Valley, Idaho.

I’m so happy for these two, can’t quite put it into words. Love that they chose a ‘normal’ name too; it just goes to show how level-headed and sensible the two of them are.

Also, I wouldn’t be a Supernatural fan without immediately assuming the ‘Colt’ within Thomas’ middle name is a nod to the show that brought Jared & Gen together. I hope it was intentional because it’s friggin’ ingenious.

Oh & it has to be said, Gen is pretty much my hero right now; 8lb, 6oz baby from a less than 5’3, little lady like Gen? Damn, woman. Goes without saying little Thomas will be taking after his father!

Needless to say with Gen and Jared as his parents, Thomas is gonna be one lucky kid – with fantastic genes to boot – I’ve never met a more down-to-earth and generous couple than the Padaleckis. Their fulfilled promise of matching the donation to St Jude says it all on that count.
