Shopping while you’re pregnant can be daunting. Thanks to a rise in maternity fashion, there are now loads of brands and styles to choose from.

But according to Olivia Myers, head designer for A Pea in the Pod, there are just a few key items you need to consider when building your mom-to-be wardrobe.

Check them out below:

Jeans: They are the foundation of an expectant mom’s wardrobe. Literally, jeans are one of the most versatile pieces of clothing when a woman is pregnant. You can either pair them with tees for a comfortable casual outfit or with a feminine blouse for a chic evening look.

And with all the different belly panel options available, it shouldn’t be hard to find the most comfortable fit for your growing body. Plus, there are so many cuts and washes (even bright colors!), expectant moms can easily maintain their own style during their pregnancy.

Cardigan: Layering is essential throughout a woman’s pregnancy, especially if you’re experiencing a change of seasons so a neutral cardigan or wrap sweater is a nice addition.

Just throw it over a tee or button-down for instant polish. Bonus: It’s also a great post pregnancy piece as you work towards getting back your pre-baby figure.

Bra and Panty: It’s important to invest in new bras that will accommodate your growing ‘assets’ and provide the support you need. And just as you will outgrow your pre-pregnancy pants, it is likely that you will outgrow your pre-pregnancy panties.

More than anything, you want to be comfortable while you’re pregnant so look for pieces that have a little stretch so they accommodate your changing body.

Side Ruched Tees and Tanks: These are the perfect addition to any pregnant woman’s wardrobe. Not only are they are long enough to cover the entire belly, but the side ruching provides a feminine shape.

They’re also extremely flattering. Plus, you can layer them under jackets and sweaters or wear them alone. This season, go for bright solids or fun (think Ikat) and classic (stripes, anyone?) prints.

LMD (Little.Maternity.Dress): Wearing dresses during pregnancy can be an easy solution to comfort, ease of dressing and style all in one.

Our fave silhouette? A chic wrap dress in a soft jersey knit, which can be worn during and after pregnancy. Opt for a version that can be worn to the office or date night like this pretty print style, left.

I only bought two pair of pants during my whole pregnancy. Shorts and normal jeans. No extra shirts, no jacket, no bra. Didn’t gain a lot of weight ( only 6 kg ) and luckily I was pregant during spring/summer – so no need for insanely expensive winter clothes.

Not a fan of high heels during prenancy!!!

"We weren't trying to have kids. We left it up to fate. I knew there was a possibility, but I was really excited. Even if you are trying, just to see a positive result is shocking!"
