Cute and Easy Ways to Decorate Your Little One’s Bedroom

Artist Yuko Lau had a vision in mind when it came time to decorate her daughter’s bedroom, but her little one had other plans.

“I thought that I was going to get away with not using pink at all, but your child will tell you what they want,” she says laughing.

After bringing home her adopted daughter in 2005, Lau was inspired to create her Peek-A-Boo collection of artwork, sold through‘s Art for Kids microsite.

The initiative aims to get parents to introduce art into kids’ bedrooms, but Lau says parents should avoid getting carried away.

“People obsess too much about how to decorate,” she says. “I don’t think there’s any particular rules, but if I have to tell someone, I tell them to keep it simple. Just pick two colors you want to use, like green and pink, or red and blue. Don’t use too many colors to start.”

When it comes to hanging posters or photos, Lau also says to keep the number to a minimum.

“Depending on the size of the room, get maybe two or three,” she says. “I think it’s good to also keep an area free for your children’s art, too. Because if you give them too many things, I think children’s imagination won’t grow. If you keep it simple, they will start using their brain and work with their imagination.”

As kids grow older, they’ll also become more vocal in what they want displayed in their room, an important part of their creative process Lau says.

“With my daughter, I tried to do away with princesses and fairies, but no, that’s what she wants,” she says.

“The room has to be a happy place for them. When you include your children in choosing posters, and then they see it on their wall, they feel like made such a big decision. I think that really makes them happy.”
