Alyssa Milano: My Son Milo’s a Latching Pro

12/12/2011 at 04:00 PM ET

Since the arrival of son Milo Thomas, Alyssa Milano has had no problem bonding with her nursing newborn.

“I was lucky to have a baby who from the moment he came into the world, was a pro at latching on,” the New Year’s Eve actress, 38, tells Best for Babes. “I think the thing I like best about breastfeeding is the closeness I feel to Milo and knowing that he’s getting the best of me.”

And while Milano is intent on nursing her 3-month-old son, the new mom isn’t prepared to take it public.

“I wish I could breastfeed in public without feeling as though a picture would show up on TMZ,” she admits. “I’ve breastfed Milo in my car numerous times and in fitting rooms at stores. But mostly, when we go out I bring a bottle of expressed milk because sadly, I’m just not comfortable feeding him in public.”

From mommy mishaps to navigating life with a newborn, Milano says there’s one place she can always turn to for much-needed advice: her Twitter followers.

“I can ask a question about anything at all and get a good variety of opinions from everyone,” she explains. “When I tweet about breastfeeding or baby stuff in general, it feels good knowing that women are there to support each other.”

Awwww…what a beautiful baby boy.

Harley on

He’s adorable! She looks so content; I love it!

Bugsmum on

They’re both adorable, I love those chubby cheeks of his.

It’s sad that the “paps” are so full on that she doesn’t feel safe b/feeding in public. Don’t blame her though it would end up on every celeb website and in every gossip magazine the world over. As a breastfeeding mum I wouldn’t want to see pics of me feeding or have to read other peoples opinions on it.

Best wishes for a Merry christmas and a happy and safe new year!

Wow, what a cutie!!

Lizz on

I am so glad celebrities are setting a great example. I understand why she wouldn’t want to bf in public with all the cameras

He’s adorable! Got his mama’s eyes!

Gorgeous, and he looks just like her ❤

I feel where Alyssa is coming from, I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable breast feeding in public neither. I breast fed my daughter for the 1st year of her life and never did I sit in the middle of a public place and suddenly just popped a boob out. More power to the ones that do it, but I won’t be caught in that situation.

Gorgeous baby!! So glad she is nursing, healthy healthy!!

glad that more and more celebs mention they are breastfeeding. as a “nobody” its easy for me to breastfeed in public (i have a method of wearing my clothes and nursing tank that i honestly dont think most people know what im doing, so im definitely not “popping a boob out in public”). as a breastfeeding celeb though…yeah, i wouldnt want cameras aimed at my chest all day. sucks.

Wear one of the snugglers with a zipper on the inside and he can nurse without anyone knowing it. Worked for my boys.

Such a cute baby. I’ve always been comfortable nursing in public, but I can imagine if there were paparazzi wanting to take pictures of me I would not be comfortable with it.

Liz on

Gosh she’s so self absorbed going on about her cans. Good grief. Who cares!

elizabetholwigphotography on

@Liz- What an incredibly cruel thing to say. Alyssa is not bragging about her “cans”, as you so tastefully call them. When she says that she knows Milo is getting the best of her she is not saying to the world “Oh my son gets to play with my perfectly formed boobs”, she is saying that he is receiving all of the benefits of breastfeeding(antibodies, nutrients,uh food?) and he is receiving them all from her. Granted I am not, nor have I yet to be a breastfeeding mother I would imagine I would feel the same way as Alyssa. Im sure it feels wonderful to know that you are giving your baby the best of you.

Hey Liz, did you know that is what your cans are really for?

Shannon on

He is sooooooooooo cute! Alyssa is lovely as always.

@Liz-this is from an interview with Best for Babes which is a breastfeeding support and information site. Of course she’s going to talk about her “cans”.

Roro on

I hope she knows they sell cover ups! Beautiful baby by the way.

Janie on

Ha! I’ve never heard of breasts being referred to as “cans” before.

Way to keep it classy, Liz.

I’ve nursed both my children in public and not once have I “suddenly popped out a boob out” and I don’t use a cover.

Breastfeeding and appropriate baby wearing all in one article? Awesome!

Yes, it’s sad that Alyssa doesn’t feel comfortable nursing in public but I can’t say I blame her. Some people aren’t comfortable with it even if they don’t have the paps following them around! If I was in her situation, I wouldn’t nurse in public either. Sad that here in the US we don’t respect their right to privacy enough.

I think of the actress Marlo Thomas when I read his name. Pretty cool how his name has almost all the letters of Alyssa’s last name. Good way to put some of her name into it! So often, boys are named something on the father’s side or a male on the mom’s.

Aw what a cute baby 🙂

Honestly, new celebrity moms go on and on about breastfeeding, making time to bond, bump showings; you aren’t the first one to experience it, honey.

mommy3 on

OMG , he looks so much like her..have to say he is a gorgeous baby so adorable. stop criticizing people you dont even know!! she is not self absorbed you jack ass, she is explaining how it is uncomfortable..geez what an idiot LIZ!!!!!!!

blessedwithboys on

Oh, man is he ever CUTE! 🙂 I NIPed all the time with both of my kids. I feel sad that celebrities have to worry about nosy paps getting too close.

Good for you for talking about BFing, though!

Marky on

And when and if you get pregnant and nurse a baby, you will go on and on about it too

This situation is pathetic, a woman can not breastfeed her son (who is also very healthy for him) without being branded a complete exhibitionist or imprisoned? But what kind of country we are building!. I’ve long since tired of the false puritanism that exists in my country who beats his chest telling himself “developed”. Developed? Shit, that it is the day we get past both Puritanism cheap!
