The story about the adoption of the little girl with HIV was so inspirational! A lot of people often say that they are “just hoping for a healthy baby” and often forget that children with health issues are just as valuable and just as worthy of love. They need homes too.

I couldn’t find a place to comment directly on the overdue pregnancy article. The only good thing about it it is it give women a good idea how their doctor will handle it, if they have the typical doctor. Other than that, it’s terrible. It starts off saying it’s ok to go one or two weeks, late, due dates can be off, be patient, etc. The rest of the article contradicts it completely, saying your doctor may begin to intervene as early as 39 weeks. That is because most doctors are not practicing evidence based care! Induction is no joke and induction rates are way too high. Ina May Gaskin’s newest book and her interview w/ Ricki Lake are excellent. As are Lake’s book and movies. Henci Goer’s “thinking woman’a guide…” also has good info. Induction should be avoided unless truly medically necessary.

Steph I agree! And a lot of the time inductions end in a c section. I had a natural epi free birth with no intervention at all with my son. He was 2 weeks early and healthy as can be. DD I had to be induced almost 5 weeks early due to severe pre eclampsia/HELLP which I almost died from and had to have an emergency c section. I had no choice in an early induction though.

Holiday, glad you’re ok. It was definitely medically necessary for you. I had to induce at 41 weeks 5 days. I wish I could have waited a few more days to go into labor. It was unnecessarily traumatic and the recovery was about 9 months.
I don’t want women to be scared, but they need to know it has major risks, and being sick of being pregnant is not a good reason. Doctors just treat it like it’s no big deal.

My mom was induced with me (her first) because I was three weeks late and she was in labor for 3 days after the induction (and no pain medication for any of it, which is crazy to me). My brothers were late too but she didn’t have to be induced with them and she was really happy because it was traumatic for her the first time.
