Natalie Portman‘s garden guys!

The actress stands by her men — fiancé Benjamin Millepied and 5-month-old son Aleph — during a visit to the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, Calif., on Saturday.

Portman, 30, gave birth to her baby boy with her ballet dancer beau, 34, in June.

I love the name Aleph! And my goodness, Natalie’s legs look extraordinarily thin in this picture. Maybe it’s just the way the sun is shining.

Cute. I didn’t know they were engaged. How is Aleph pronounced?

- Shannon on

Oops! Forgot the slip:)

- Kim Chrisman on

Aleph is pronounced like Al-eff, or Alex with and f instead of an x.

nice pic

Kim, I think she’s wearing leggings under her skirt though.

Nat’s hair has gotten so long and I love that Ben is baby wearing. :) Beautiful family. :)

Actually, no, River, it is not pronounced like that. It is pronounced as AH-leff. The accent is on the first syllable, which rhymes with the first syllable in “ah-choo” (the sound of a sneeze).

OMG it’s been 5 months already!!! Dang, seems like she just had him yesterday.

The time is going by so fast!!! Slow down time!!! lol

- Dee on

Thanks River. :)

Sara, maybe so, but I’ll continue pronouncing it al-eff. I actually knew a guy in high school named Alef; his mother was syrian ( Alef is also “A” in the arabic alphabet) and even she pronounced his name the American sounding way. To each his own, though.

- River on

It’s not “to each his own”, River. Why someone would purposely mispronounce a name is beyond me. Sara is 100% correct, it is pronounced “AH-leff”, as his name is the Hebrew version of the letter Aleph, not Arabic pronunciation.

Incredibly weird outfit. PPD?

- elizabeth on

@elizabeth. How exactly do you assume from a picture that a woman has PPD?

- Siera on

RFK – Yes IT IS to each his own, because Aleph is not a real name to begin with! It is the first letter of the alphabet! The one Alef I have known in my life pronounced his name the way I described, so I will always pronounce it that way. Just so you know, Alef is pronounced the same way in arabic as it is in hebrew, so I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make there. My point was that even Alef’s mother who is Syrian decided to pronounce it the “American” way.

Living in America, and seeing that Natalie Portman has an American accent, its not so crazy to assume that she would pronounce it with an american accent. Many names given to American children are not pronounced the “right” way, but you don’t see anybody complaining. Lets use some common ones as examples: Isabella, Gabriella, Maria, Micaela. All four of these names come Latin, and they are common names in Romance-language speaking countries (i.e. italy, france, spain, portugal, romania). Isabella should really be pronounced ee-sah-bell-ah instead of the common is-uh-bell-uh, Gabriella should really be pronounced gah-bree-ell-ah instead of the common gab-ree-ell-uh, Maria should really be pronounced Mah-ree-ah instead of the common Merr-ee-uh, and Micaela should really be pronounced mee-kah-ell-ah instead of the common Muh-kay-luh. None of these names are pronounced the right way in America. See my point?

- River on

Wow Natalie hardly looks like an A list actress here! I wonder how much time she will take off before doing another movie?

Would love to know what an “American accent” is….considering the northern people and the southern people sound completely different. Heck we sound like we’re from seperate countries!

I adore Natalie, always have. Hard to believe its been 5 months already tho…time sure flies fast

- MommytoanE on

Alef, the first letter in Hebrew (which is the base of his name) is pronounced like Alex. Period.

- Michal on

Michal – Except not because the first letter of the alphabet in hebrew is pronounced AH – leh – f. The sound made when pronouncing Alex doesn’t even exist in Hebrew
