Emily Procter: Pippa Has Her Own Fan Following

When Emily Procter and boyfriend Paul Bryan decided to name their now 9-month-old daughter Philippa Frances — a.k.a Pippa — they thought they had spared her from having a common name.

“As an Emily, anytime I’m in any sort of a giant store, I hear it 60 times and I never know if it was for me or someone else,” she tells PEOPLE.

“We were thinking it would be really nice for her to have a name that’s not everywhere. When Pippa Middleton showed up, we realized we maybe picked a name that is more everywhere than Emily all of a sudden.”

And much like her famous namesake, Pippa, who was born in December 2010, has developed a fan following of her own: mom’s coworkers on the set of CSI: Miami.

“We have a crew that has a lot of children,” Procter, 43, says. “I’ll set her down for rehearsal and they’ll all watch her. It’s great to see these giant grip and electric dudes playing with a baby.”

Striking a balance between career and motherhood has come easy for Procter, who returned to the set only four weeks after giving birth, and has proven to be an exciting learning experience for her little one, as well.

“The first time I went back to work with her where she was sort of sitting up and present, she tried to pull my lashes off. She was very confused as to what I had on my face,” Procter jokes.

“But now she’ll sit in my lap when I have my makeup put on. I feel like it’s a good experience for her because she gets to be around so many people and it’s interesting and she does enjoy it. She always seems very excited.”

With her first birthday fast approaching, Pippa’s personality has also started to assert itself, sometimes to disastrous results.

“She discovered how to unroll the toilet paper the other day,” Procter shares. “I had her on the floor in the bathroom and I’m getting ready and I know that everything is picked up and I think I’m totally safe and I turn around, and there is a big pile of toilet paper. And of course she’s trying to eat it.”

“I absolutely just love it,” she adds. “It’s just such a fun thing to do, to be with her.”

Her status as new mom also inspired Procter to partner with clothing manufacturer No nonsense to launch the Socks for America campaign, which aims to donate one million pairs of children’s socks to the charity Kids in Distressed Situations.

“When I was in college, I had an after-school program with kids that were below the poverty line that I worked with, and I noticed with them that several of them never even had socks,” she says.

“That was the first time I had experience with how important an item this is. I just felt like if I can be a part of a team that’s helping people, that is my goal just after becoming a mom. I’m really hoping that the message will get out there.”

I wonder if her full name is Phillipa and Pippa is the name they use. We were deciding between Phillipa (Pippa) or Poppy for our daughter 4 years ago. I am very glad now that went with Poppy :-) When we named our son Kai 7 years ago I didn’t know any Kais but that is becoming a little more popular. It is hard to find a “unique” name that doesn’t eventually gain popularity without going the Apple or Inspektor Pilot route. I really like this actress and I am glad that she is coming back to CSI Miami!

Yes, I know what she’s talking about. I picked a name for my son that I loved, is a traditional name from our ethnicity (German) and doesn’t sound out there (in fact most people say they love it when they hear it, even though they haven’t heard it before) and it wasn’t in the social security top 1000 names for the past 11 years. Guess what? Another boy in his class has the exact same name! Too funny!

Pippa is a cute name for a dog, not a person, IMO.

poppykai, yes, Pippa’s full name is Philippa Frances. I love Emily too. She is so sweet and funny. Calleigh is my favorite character on CSI: Miami.

poppykai – yes her full name is Philippa Frances

Jess,

I know plenty of Brits who would ADAMANTLY disagree with that statement, and would have long before Pippa Middleton. It isn’t a made up name, it’s a very old HUMAN name.

Jess on

I never said it was made up. I have to say, the name Phillipa is starting to grow on me. I still like Pippa as a dog’s name, though. It seems that Pippa/Phillipa is newer in the United States where I am from. I’ve never been to the UK before. :)

Allison on

don’t really like the name Phillipa or Pippa for a child.

Pippa, in Swedish, is slang for having sex. The name always makes me smile. haha

I LOVE the name Pippa.

I was first introduced to the name 6 years ago went I went to England as an exchange student, even though it is more popular in England than anywhere else, I still felt it was quite unique, and wanted to use it when ever I had a daughter, naming her Pippa Abigail, but now I don’t know – with everyone believing it would be because of Pippa Middleton.

And like Emily Procter on CSI

@Jess, that is funny, my friend’s dog is Pippa!

As a 31 year old Philippa, that goes by Pippa, it’s sad that it’s becoming so popular. I have loved going through life never meeting someone with my name. Seems my days of that are numbered. Oh well! It is fun to see my name in “lights”, so to speak!

Grace on

I don’t think she needs to worry too much, the media is currently trying to cram Pippa Middleton down our throats, but I think she will quickly fade away before the name becomes too popular.

Magda on

Pippa Middleton’s middle name is Charlotte, I don’t know where some of you came up with Frances!

paperskyyy on

Magda- Emily’s daughter is Pippa Frances.

Grace on

@Magda: They’re not talking about Pippa Middleton’s middle name, they’re talking about Emily Procter’s baby’s name. Emily calls her daughter Pippa, but her given name if Phillipa Frances.

Kristin on

Madga- They were saying that Emily Proctor’s daughter Pippa’s middle name is Frances. They were not saying Pippa Middleton’s middle name was Frances.

My husband and I went through the same thing trying to find a name for our daughter due in November. His name is John, which is itself is very common but it is also his Dad’s name. We both agreed that we wanted something that neither of us had heard before (I am also a Brownie Leader and Teacher so hear countless names every year) but that was not really crazy or out there (And also had a very basic spelling, I have seen so many versions of so many names lol)

I think the name we have chosen fits that bill perfectly but we will see what happens when she starts school and Sparks!!

Not a huge fan of Pippa/Phillipa or Frances but love how they sound together and how they sound with her last name (I am assuming that is Bryan??) and I have always been a huge fan of Emily’s :)

Tawanna on

I’ve always liked the name Pippa, because when I first heard the name,it was from a Steven King movie, “Storm of the Century”, and the little girls name was Pippa and I have been in love with the name ever since. God bless you Emily and Paul, on your beautiful blessing.
