Sarah Jessica Parker’s Sanity Saving Secret: I Talk to Myself

How does the busy mother of three and star of I Don’t Know How She Does It cope when life gets crazy?

“I talk to myself. Constantly,” Sarah Jessica Parker tells PEOPLE Monday at the film’s premiere in New York.

“Both my babysitter and I talk to ourselves, and we’re constantly apologizing for it.”

Like her character in the film, the unassuming actress doesn’t really stop to consider how she manages it all: “There are millions and millions of women in this country that do it far better than I do with far less resources and far less support.”

“Frankly, I think women are accustomed to doing a lot,” Parker, 46, continues. “We can talk on the phone and tie a shoe and pack a lunch and change a diaper.”

As a mother, Parker notes that the biggest things she’s learned contradict each other.

“One is that I now know how much time it really takes to get the kids up in the morning,” she says. “But I still do it at the last minute, so there you go. I’ve learned nothing!”

One way that the hands-on mom maintains normalcy is by driving her kids around in a minivan, as she told Katie Couric. Since then, she’s been getting a big response from other mommy mobile owners.

“I’ve been getting a lot of support,” Parker says. “I’m very proud of my minivan.”

She’s also got a lot of support in her husband of 14 years, Matthew Broderick.

“It seems like [my wife] is responsible for a lot of organizational stuff, but I do as much as I can,” the actor, 49, explains. “I’m just good at different things.”

Broderick said he’s good at taking children James Wilkie, 8½, and twins Loretta and Tabitha, 2, where they want to go.

“I can hang out with a kid forever and do very well,” says Broderick. “I’ll be spontaneous; I’ll go to a movie, zoo, or museum. It’s simple.”

Since his recent back surgery, though, Broderick hasn’t been able to carry their daughters, and the girls have been constantly asking about how he’s doing.

“‘How’s your back, Papa?’ They’re concerned,” he laughs. “They like to ask.”

Ferris Buehler is 49? what!? Wow. They are adorable and i love them as a family. She seems so down to earth and i love that she admits that she has her faults. We all do and it’s better to just put them out there rather than make it seem like everything is perfect.

These guys are great! No need to apologise SJ, talking to oneself is a good thing!

Seem like such a sweet, normal couple with kids that are just adorable. They seem to have a great relationship that will be wonderful for their children, as well as for the two of them.

Don’t think it’s such a great relationship. He cheated on her with a girl from a play that he was in.

Love her and him too…very cute couple.

Good for them! on

I always love how SJP admits that she has help and other people do it with so much less, instead of playing the martyr like so many celebs do. She owns up to he faults, we’ve all got them. She is very admirable and I respect her for always showing class in a lifestyle where few do (Hollywood, acting, etc.)

talking to yourself is alright SJP…… keeps you organized and sane. I’m 45 years old and sometimes feel like I’ve had back surgery with all the aches and pains of aging, and my kids will ask me the same thing. Are you okay? When you wait to parent until your late 30’s, that’s what happens. We’re no Spring chickens anymore raising kids 🙂 Although we were wise and waited until we could afford to do it. Hang in there Matthew!

Wow, I like my mini van too. She should do a commercial for them! It bugs me when moms act like driving a minivan is awful…its not. I love it! Not having enough room is awful! 😉
