January Jones Welcomes Son Xander Dane

Jason Merritt/Getty

And baby makes two.

Mad Men star January Jones welcomed her first child on Tuesday, Sept. 13, her rep confirms to PEOPLE.

Son Xander Dane Jones and the new mom are “doing great,” the rep says.

Jones, 33, chose to keep the sex of her baby under wraps, remarking “it’s going to be a surprise for me” during a June interview.

The actress announced the pregnancy in April.

A source told PEOPLE at the time, “She’s really looking forward to this new chapter in her life as a single mom.”

Love the name! Congratulations!

- Pamela on

I love the name. And I wish them all the best.

I don’t know anything about January Jones, so I have no real opinion on her, but I hope she enjoys motherhood!

- Micheley on

Not crazy about the name, I like Alexander better. But congrats to her and good luck! :)

- Sarah S. on

Congrats to her! I like the name.

- Brooklyn on

wow. either i haven’t been paying attention or i had a time lapse. i could have sworn she was only a few months along. boy was i wrong. love the name. i wonder if it is short for alexander or if his full name is xander. she is so beautiful. i wish her and xander all the best!

- e on

Congrats to her.

I prefer Xander to Alex or Alexander.

- Melinda on

Love the name. Xander used to be on my list of possible name (hubby had different ideas, lol).

Congratulations to January!

- Olivia on

Very cool name!

- Holiday on

Nice Name…still hate her

- Brooke C. on

I usually just read the posts and not comment but I figured I would comment this time. I love love love the name she chose. My 2 year is is named Alexander but we call him Xander since his daddy wouldnt just let me name him Xander he said that it had to be Alexander in case he wanted to be called Alexander or Alex when he gets older but he is our little Xander.

Congrats on your little Xander!!

- Alicia on

The names sound a bit redundant and who’s the pappy?!

- KLS on

It’s ok, Xander isnt really my type, but cute for her, everyone has their own taste. I wonder who the father is….I guess we will find out soon as with Padma

- Lady on

I’m with Brooke. But it’s not the baby’s fault. I’m glad he’s healthy.

- kendrajoi on

I hate the name, I’d rather Alexander Dane Jones! Congrats to her!! I thought she was having a girl.

- Jennifer Redgrave on

GREAT NAME!!!! Congrats to her!

- FAB on

Who’s the Daddy?

- Krissy on

What wonderful news. My grandmother, who raised three kids on her own starting in the sixties, was the most important person in my life growing up, so I have great respect for single parents. I’m sure January is probably through the roof with her new little man and I wish them both all the best.

Also, this might be a bit vain, but I think January had some of the most amazing maternity style – when she wasn’t going to yoga, at least. I think my favorite was the henley with the printed floral maxi skirt and boots. Love!

- Leigh on

Xander is a cool name! I’m surprised she had him already–I didn’t think she was that far along. I don’t recall any pics of her looking huge (but maybe she never got huge).

- Janie on

I absolutely did not realize she was 9 months?????? maybe he was born early? i thought she was 6 at the very latest

- lucy on

I’m surprised you guys are surprised! She said in that interview she did about yoga and Dairy Queen that she was due in early fall, so I definitely thought the baby would be here in Sept.

LOVE the name. Xander Jones looks and sounds great.

- Maggie on

I have wondered who the Dad is also…we (and Xander) may never know. Potentially very sad.

- Sarah S. on

I just thought of something….Maybe she went with “X” because the baby was conceived on the X-Men set (and quite possibly allegedly with the film’s married director)

- Brooke C. on

Has it ever occurred to any of you that there is no daddy? Maybe she got pregnant on her own? Maybe this was something she wanted rather than an accident?

There’s a growing movement of women taking motherhood into their own hands.

- Alison on

This was a fast pregnancy!

Zander/Xander is actually quite common I know 3! It’s cute though. Yahoo list it as “unusual” baby name. Maybe it’s unusual in the fact that a celeb chose something a bit “normal” for a change!! I quite like it! Wish her the best.

- JMO on

Not fond of the name but my nephew is Xander also, so I’m also associated it with a wild child ;)

I prefer it as Zander, personally.

- LouisaP on

I just want to say Dander when I hear that name lol. I like Xander and I like Dane but not together.

- Mina on

I thought it said Xavier at first as the name and I was like :0 funny.

But anyway, congrats! I like the name Xander.

- Maddie on

Congratulations to the happy mama and her extended family :)

I’ve known some truly extraordinary single mothers – my mom was forced to be one when I was 3 until I was 16 and she did a phenomenal job raising two children (managed to go to PA school at University of Washington, work in Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery at the Mayo Clinic, and quite a few other truly remarkable things in that time as well). So, instead of playing “who’s the father” maybe we should focus on congratulating her for choosing to raise a child, give her love and life to a child, and surround that child with plenty of good people (which I’m sure she has) and the many other advantages she’s able to provide because of the profession she chose. I’m sure, if and when she’s ready to welcome a person into her family, she will.

- Harley on

I like the slightly quirky name with her simple last name.

- Steph on

Sarah S., you find it very sad that you don’t know the details of January’s personal life? Okay.

- soph on

Congratulations to her on the birth of her little boy!

Brooke C., with all due respect, that is a terrible theory.

- Reese on

Minnie Driver never disclosed her baby’s father to the public either. It’s a private matter and January doesn’t really owe the public anything-if she doesn’t want to share, then it’s her right not to

- Pamela on

Congratulations to her! Being a single parent is very hard, but it’s worth it.

- Anna on

YAY for the Jones family! I am so happy for January…and I like the name, it’s unique and cool yet not weird :) I wish her and Xander all the health and happiness in the world :) And once and for all, WHO CARES WHO THE FATHER IS…what business is it of ours…all that matters is that mother and baby are happy and healthy…Congrats to January…enjoy your beautiful baby boy-=)

- Megan on

KLS, what do you mean the names are redundant? They don’t sound anything alike, and as far as I know don’t have the same meanings? Do you even know what the word “redundant” means?

- sara on

Cool name for an undoubtedly beautiful baby with an amazing mom.

Also hate is a strong word. I can’t hate someone I don’t know. For example I don’t hate Kesha. I just don’t like her or her music. :D

Anyways Congrats to your baby boy Xander Dane Jones!
I like Xander because of Buffy and Dane because of Dane Cook! :D

- Zoey on

Not crazy about the name … I prefer his middle name – Dane – better. And forgive my ignorance, but is it pronounced like “Zander” or “X – ander”? And I agree with Alison, I’ve always gotten the impression that January had this baby on her own through a donor, but that’s pure speculation, of course. At any rate, God bless her and her new little one. I’m sure she’ll be an awesome mama :)

- Sheri on

@ – Brooke C – Hating someone like you say you do this woman must be such a problem for you. Has she hurt you personally in any way to make you say you hate her? Did she grab your spade or stomp on your sandcastle when you were kids?

I don’t care who the daddy is because that’s none of my business. There might not even be an actual daddy to begin with. There are plenty of women out there who use donor sperm or actually get dumped by the fathers of their babies. Just because someone is a private person does not mean they are liars and cheaters. If that’s how some of you view the world around you then I feel sad for you. truly I do.

- Hea on

Xander Jones is a pretty name, I like it :)

- Ali on

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm
I am quite sure that mom of three German Supermodel Miss Claudia Schiffer is NOT thrilled about this piece of baby news but Baby Daddy Matthew Vaughn is !!!!!!!!!!
Vaughn is def the REAL BABY DADDY….Mark my words ladies…..

- Zoe on

Such a awesome name!

Xander has always been one of my favourite names

- Chloe on

Wow, I don’t envy single moms…it’s a tough job even if you have a hubby or boyfriend to help you. Couldn’t imagine not having any help with my 6 weeks old. No-one to share the ups and downs with. It’s pretty sad :( But I do respect everyone who has the energy and strength to do it on their own!

I like the name Xander, sounds far more unique than Alexander. :)

- Alexandra on

@Brooke C.: Wow, you’ve definitely got too much time to think about stuff like that!

- Alexandra on

Many women are going the single mother route these days. There is no shame in it. Only those that are on their moral high-horses bring shame to it.

Xander was wildly popular in my son’s daycare when he was younger. He was born in 2003, and there were *7* Xanders there at that time. We haven’t heard the name at all since moving further south.

I can’t help but think of Xander Cage every time I hear the name. One of my favorite movies…I listened to the soundtrack while in labor. :)

- Robin on

Pretty cool name. Congrats to her and hope she does a good job as a single mom.

- Mira on

I like the name. I’m puzzled as to why the identity of the father is anyone’s damn business.

- KatR on

September 13th is my birthday and I spent it at home with my sick and feverish 14 month old and cleaning up puke….this makes my day. Another baby sharing my day…YAY for the Septemberians and congrats January :)

- Dee on

I like the name, wasn’t one of the characters on XMen first class named Xander?

- hmm on

@KatR I’m puzzled as to why the identity of the father is anyone’s damn business, so right it is not anyone’s business but her’s and her son.

Congratulations on your new baby.

- loren on

I like the name. Something just a bit off the beaten path to go along with Jones. Nice!

- Stella Bella on

Xander is a great name, love it, love it! Congrats to January. And regardless of who dad is, I’m sure he knows he’s the baby daddy and has chosen not to come forward – shame on him.

- Jen on

Congrats!! I really like the name. The theories posted on here are a bit wackadoo.

Signed, not jillian

- Jillian on

I like the name, but hate the spelling. X does not make a ‘Z’ sound, when the name is shortened from Alexander, it is fine because the way the letters run together, it makes the sound. If your child is named Xander, it should be spelt Zander. Just my opinion, obviously. It is just something that has always gotten on my nerves.

- kjc on

X does make the Z sound sometimes, like in xylophone. The name Xander is typically spelled with an “X” … “z” just looks like cr8tiv spelling.

- Jessie on

Jen, shame on him why? He may not be a public figure, and even if he is, he has no obligation to reveal to the public that he’s the father. It’s none of our business.

- dsfg on

Good point Jessie, but I still don’t care for it.

- kjc on

The baby was conceived around Christmas 2010 and she broke up with Jason Sudekis in January 2011. You do the math. Also- Claudia Schiffer’s husband Matthew Vaughn (and January’s X-Men director) was named the baby-daddy. If he is NOT the father, why didn’t January speak up and say, “he is NOT the father!” Something is fishy. Why doesn’t Jason just say “it’s mine or it’s NOT mine!”

- Mary on

Maybe she’s not sure WHO the father is????

- Cathe on

Nice, Cathe.

- soph on

Mary, why wouldn’t they do that? Because, for the thousanth time, IT’S NO ONE ELSE’S BUSINESS. Just because there are rumors or gossip about something doesn’t mean they should dignify it by acknowledging it.

- sara on

Congrats! Nice name! I love this photo of her!

- sat on

Mary, Matthews rep, spoke up and said, it wasn’t his…..not that it’s any of the publics business.

- Jillian on

@Alison, while it’s very possible that she could’ve chosen to get pregnant on her own, it would seem silly to time it so she was at the end of her pregnancy while shooting Mad Men. even though they were delayed this season, they traditionally shoot in the summer (usually starting early in the summer rather than last month like they did this time around). with a schedule that’s pretty consistent, i feel like had it been a totally planned pregnancy, she would have tried to get pregnant at a different time. however, she also could’ve been trying for several months and it just happened that the successful pregnancy happened at an inopportune time for shooting.

either way, congrats to her!

- Melissa on

I don’t care for the name by itself, but it’s an ok nickname for Alexander. At least she didn’t spell it with a Z! I would say this might not have been a planned pregnancy but a wanted pregnancy, something she thought of and wanted. That’s sort of the rumor anyway. She was ready and didn’t mind being a single mom. I don’t know if the rumor that Matthew Vaughn being the father is true(how would I)but that would be crazy. I wonder where the middle name Dane came from. It made me think of Eric Dane and Dane Cook though!

- Romy on

I too fail to see why the father’s udentity is any of our business. January’s business, yes, Xander’s business, yes, the father’s business, yes, but mine, no. Also, considering that Matthew Vaughn grew up thinking that one man (who absolutely denied paternity) was his father only to find out as an adult that his biological father was in fact another man, I find it hard to believe that he would deny being the father if he actually was.

- MiB on

Not every man doesn’t do what his father did…

- sat on

Congrats to January and I think she chose a really cool name. I may be bias because that’s my 5yo son’s name! :)

- Rachel on

Why do people keep scolding that “it’s not anyone’s business” yet these are the same people who are here on a gossip page reading about other people’s business. Go figure…

- J on

sat – Or they do just that… Or whatever you mean.

- Hea on

Congratulations on your Xander. My grandson, my first, is also a Xander only his name is spelled Zander. He was going to be Alexander, but dad objected, so it is Zander with a “Z”!

- Jae on

I thought Jason Sudeikis (sp?) was the father?

- Amanda on

Congrats to JJ! :-)

I love the name. It’s great to see some normal classic names in Hollywood instead of ridiculous made-up names like Snuubblewuffle Yaalarrfiffle which I’m sure some celeb will snap up to be ‘yewwwneek’.

I have to laugh at everyone looking way too hard at the name. Just because her name has an X doesn’t mean it has anything to do with X-Men or anyone in or involved in the movie. Some of the conspiracy theories about the father are way too ridiculous. Who cares? She doesn’t want it public. Maybe the father doesn’t either. She’s left it off the birth certificate. You all act like she’s the first woman ever in the history of human kind to be a single mother.

- Nyc on

Where do they get these names – feel sorry for the child having to be called Xander. To me having a baby out of wedlock is nothing to be bragging about – don’t care how “fashionable” it seems.

- J on

I prefer Alexander-it’s a classic + strong name like Samuel.

- Mia on

Okay – so the baby’s father’s identity is no one’s business. Well, in that case, neither is the fact that she had a baby. So…why is everyone on here commenting?

Matthew Vaughn was not named as the “baby daddy”. He was accused of it by gossips and denied it.

My bet’s with Jason Sudekis, given his rather strange response when he was asked if he knew she was pregnant.

And I like the name Xander – one of my favourite actors is named Xander Berkely.

And yes ‘X’ is sometimes pronounced with a ‘Z’ sound…

- Cyn on

Damn it, Nyc – “Snuubblewuffle Yaalarrfiffle” was the name I was going to use!!

- Cyn on

I love the name too! Congrats to her.

- Terri on

I have seen a few tv movies of January before Mad Men and I think she is a fairly good actress. Congratulations and good luck for having and raising a baby by herself

- larena on

“Okay – so the baby’s father’s identity is no one’s business. Well, in that case, neither is the fact that she had a baby.”

Nice try, but no. Consider the fact that her rep issued statements about both the pregnancy and the birth to People. Make sense now?
