Flea and Anthony Kiedis: Fatherhood Is a ‘Beautiful Club’

Three-quarters of the Red Hot Chili Peppers are now proud members of the daddy club — and say it can be about as crazy as some of their on-the-road adventures.

“I love the club,” frontman Anthony Kiedis, 48, explains. “Good God, it’s a beautiful club. Who knew? You can’t know until you go. It’s wild.”

Chatting during an appearance On the Record with Fuse airing Tuesday, Kiedis describes his 3½-year-old son Everly Bear — who sports his father’s signature hairstyle — as “a little boy who’s often mistaken for a girl because his hair is real long.”

Other members of the Chili Peppers’ growing brood include drummer Chad Smith‘s five childrenManon, Justin, Ava, Cole and Beckett, all under the age of 14.

Bassist Michael ‘Flea’ Balzary has daughter Sunny Bebop, 5½, with model Frankie Rayder, as well as elder daughter Clara, 22, who recently graduated from college and currently works as a photographer.

“I love being a father and wanted to be a father long before I had any business being a father,” he tells Fuse. “One could argue easily that I had no business being a father when I became a father at 25 … but I just love it. That kind of love — I have never experienced it before. That kind of unconditional, doing anything for a person love.”

Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who plays on the band’s new album I’m With You, remains childless for now, but it’s likely that he’s getting some encouragement from his bandmates to join the club.

Says Kiedis: “I think people that have fear that, ‘Oh if I have a kid I won’t be able to do this and I won’t be able to do that.’ It’s kind of the opposite. It really gives you energy. It makes people better.”

I should send this to the father of my son who has seen him only twice (my boy is 20 months) because he just wasn’t ready for a baby at 29! Wish all men felt like these guys about fatherhood!

I’m so glad to hear from Anthony and sad it didn’t work out with his lady. Wishing them good times always and the privacy they deserve.

yeah, fatherhood probably is nice when you have a paying gig like being a musician, otherwise its that much more stressful.

Hang in there Jesse. It just means that you and your son dodged a bullet sooner, rather than later.

Great article! It’s nice to hear about parenthood from the father’s side from time to time.

Yeah, fatherhood is easy and exciting – when MOM does all the care-taking that’s in depth!

Flea participated in a documentary called “The other F word”–rockers who are fathers :)

I wonder if his son would like a haircut so he’s no longer mistaken for a girl. I wonder … did his daddy ever ask him – or is it all about what daddy wants?
