Bauer Griffin

Bear Blu Jarecki hits the Big Apple!

The 11-week-old enjoyed a cuddle with mom Alicia Silverstone as she heads back to work, filming Gods Behaving Badly on Monday in Yonkers, N.Y.

Born May 5, Bear is the first child for the actress, 34, and husband Christopher Jarecki.

“We are all three in love!” Silverstone blogged shortly after her son’s birth.

so i know alicia is a vegan, which is no milk from animals along with other things, and she has said she planned on raising her son vegan… so what does he eat? does she nurse? just curious

- biddie on

I think he looks just like Mommy!

- A. on

What a beautiful little baby and Alicia looks great!

- Julie on

lol why wouldn’t she nurse? Vegans don’t drink or eat animal products…but breast milk was meant for babies…

Cows milk was meant for baby cows…

- Tippy on

well isnt human milk considered a product of animals? so she is kinda a hypocrite

- biddie on

Hi is so cute! Love that head full of hair!

Biddie, my guess would be that she nurses but of course, I don’t know for sure!

- Tee on

what a cutie! he looks like alicia

- Meghan on

Human milk from women and meant for babies is vastly different than cow milk meant for baby calves. As a vegan, I’m sure she eats a ton of vegetables. I imagine that when Bear gets older, she will puree vegetables for baby food.

Bear is definitely a sweetie pie ;) Love it when they are that tiny! They grow so quickly.

- K on

An animal can’t consent to milking, but a human can. That means she is not a hypocrite.

- ecl on

I’ve been a fan of his name since they first shared it with us. AWWW he’s adorable. I love babies when they’re someone else’s lol.

- Adrienne on

Cute baby….. SN: Im sure this very well educated VEGAN mom knows what to give her child….

- FAB on

biddie, you’re a retard. milk from a COW is from an animal. human milk is okay since it’s not from an animal. geez.

- Anonymous on

biddie: Are you stupid? Breast milk IS a product of animals, it is very natural for HUMAN infants to consume HUMAN breast milk. No animals are harmed in the process.

Cow milk is meant for baby COWS.

- M on

Also, I’m sure her son will be eating a wide variety of healthy things when he is older. Contrary to popular belief, vegans eat a lot more than just lettuce. We eat: Fruits, Vegetables, Legumes, Grains, Nuts, Seeds, and Sprouts.

- M on

*No non-human animals are harmed in the process

- M on

CUTE little Bear. Adorable boy.

- Grace2 on

Way to attack poor Biddie for asking a simple question. She’s confused to perhaps directing her to sources to educate herself, instead of bashing her is a better way to go. Biddie, if you search vegan stand on breastfeeding, you’ll actually find that its quite acceptable….but purely based on the fact that the mother is consenting and an animal is technically not consenting.

For those saying “Cow’s milk is made for cow’s”…uhm. How many of you actually fed your babies regular milk before 1? As a newborn, I would think little Bear is on formula or breastmilk…and since there technically isn’t a *vegan* formula, breastmilk would be the way to go.

Bear is such a little cutie tho! Definately has some of his momma’s traits. :)

- mommytoane on

The ignorance concerning veganism astounds me. Of course she is nursing him. Why would anyone think any different? It is perfectly natural for a mother to nurse her own child. And of course a vegan woman would raise her child as a vegan. We are the only species ignorant enough to use another animal as a wet nurse. Not only that but humans use other animals long after the offspring of those animals would have weaned.

Educate yourself about living as a vegan before asking such stupid questions. Jesus eat a chicken nugget if it helps you to read the big words like “plant-based” and “animal cruelty.”

- Kristen on

Biddie did not deserve to be called a retard. People really need to stop using the word retard….do you have any clue how offensive it is? Who am I kidding,….some people just don’t care.

- Jillian on

whoa, chill out. my perception of it WAS- humans are animals and vegans dont consume any animal products, so breatmilk from a human is still a product of an animal….

and “anonymous” clearly you are the retard if you think humans are not animals

- biddie on

whoa, chill out. my perception was that she was a vegan and that vegans do not consume ANY animal products; so if she was raising her son a vegan than she would not be nursing because (unlike what “anonymous” seems to think) humans are animals and human breastmilk would be a product of animals…..

and “anonymous” clearly you are the retard if you think humans are not animals

and “m” i wasnt attacking Alicia or vegans and no animals are harmed in the process of extracting milk from a cow

anyway, my comment was not meant to cause this response, my apologies

- biddie on

Cute kid. I can’t imagine taking the name Bear Jarecki seriously if it came across my desk on a resume, but perhaps when he’s old enough to apply for jobs, names like Bear will be the norm.

On a side note, calling someone stupid or “retarded” for simply asking a question is absolutely uncalled for. It appears to be an honest question of someone who wants to know more about a topic… nothing stupid about that. Whatever happened to “there are no stupid questions”? Come on people, let’s get along.

- Jen on

He is adorable!! Very cute. @Adrienne: HAHAHA That cracked me up. I love babies, but realize more and more I’ll be ready for a third in a year or so. HAHA

- Katie on

Poor her…She looks so worn out and tired. He is cute but ugh! That name

- Britney on

WOW, what a viscious group..biddy ask a question and all y’all can do is call her a retard or stupid..Or can most of you not read? She said that she was courious, because she didn’t know..Must be nice to know everything and never have to ask anything..

Cute baby by the way..

- Becky on

I can’t believe someone would call someone “stupid” or “retard” on here eps. when you don’t personally know any of these commentors! It’s down right rude and disrespectful. It really is mind boggling that adults treat each other this way and then we expect real children to not go out and do the same thing!

To answer the questions she nurses and will raise Bear vegan there was an article about it recently on another blog!

- JMO on

Lord…here we go again. Some of us don’t really know that much about veganism…since we aren’t vegan. Me included. So, just calm down and if you DO know something about being a vegan, educate us kindly and don’t name call and act childish. This site has really gotten nasty lately….with the judgmental comments and namecalling. I am almost ready to take it off of my favorites because of this and I have been a follower of Celebrity baby blog for almost 6 years now. Anyway, this is an adorable picture of Alicia and her baby…he is so cute!

- ClaireSamsmom on

Peace, guys. Not everyone knows the details of veganism, so let´s be polite.I suppose she will nurse, most vegan moms do(and, at least with my vegan friends, their children nursed longer than the non vegan ones).Breast milk was meant for our babies, so they can and should nurse. :)

The whole deal with animal milk is, animals are not consenting and actually, are harmed and abused during the process.

Dairy farms keep cows constantly pregnant, so they will produce more milk and as soon as their babies are born, they are taken away from their moms to become veal( so, one industry feeds the other). And the milk that was meant for them, goes to humans.

A cow can live up to 25 years when treated well. In a dairy farm, she will be abused and sucked dry in about 5. And then… To the slaughterhouse to become burgers(because their meat isnt prime).

So, unfortunately, yes, cows are severely abused and harmed so humans can have milk and cheese.

- Mary on

Of course she’s breastfeeding! I’m not vegan, but I know plenty who are, and their children are well-fed.

And it’s such a contrast to see Alicia- natural and organic next to Rachel Zoe and her closet full of baby Gucci. Just sayin…I’m sure even though Bear has an unusual name, he’s growing up in a very consciencious home.

- hollyguest on

Cute!!!!! He looks like a little old man. Don’t like the name, but to each their own.

- KLS on

“and no animals are harmed in the process of extracting milk from a cow”

@biddie You are kidding right? Female dairy cattle are kept pregnant so that they continue to produce milk. They get pregnant because a man shoves his arm, up past his elbow, up inside of her for insemination. Her male calf is killed or sold for veal and her female calf is weaned as soon as possible so that folks like you can continue to eat a “cheese sammich.” So yeah if your idea of “no harm” includes rape, murder, and taking a baby from her mother so that you can have some cheese with your wine then yeah…enjoy your milk.

Education is clearly lost on those who are unwilling to see the truth and make the necessary changes. Ignorance and selfishness is much easier and more convenient. And at the end of the day, the pharmaceutical companies are thrilled.

But at least no one here has been so ignorant to say something like “it is wrong for her to force her beliefs on her son.” Yeah like little Johnny is taking himself to McDonalds after church.

- Kristen on

Don’t be bitter Kristen. You can educate without being a sarcastic jerk about it. Which reminds me, chocolate milk time, brb.

- J on

I think he looks a bit scrawny to me….Just sayin’

- Brooke on

@J – Lmfao, I wish I could eat dairy but I guess I’ll have to settle for big juicy steak and come and read the cbb comments. Lol Anyway, he is a cutie pie, look at all that hair.

- Toya L. on

yes, KLS, reminds me kind of the Benjamin Button baby but cuter.

- Amber on

I’m all for eating healthy and avoiding foods with added hormones and chemicals. I also realize that dairy doesn’t agree with everyone… my husband can’t tolerate cheese or milk, so we try not to include that when we cook.

But the argument that animals shouldn’t be eaten because they don’t consent makes me laugh. Nature doesn’t work that way people… there would be no life on this planet! Just imagine a lion approaching a zebra and requesting their permission to devour them. Or a bird negotiating with a worm before it snaps it up. Not gonna happen.

Also just to clarify a fact that seems to be lost on a few of the posters above… human beings are indeed animals, folks.

- fuzibuni on

Some of you act like drinking cow’s milk is a new phenomenon, but it has been going on for centuries!!
Cows can not be kept indoors because their legs would atrophy. They do go outside. Cows have to be milked or else it hurts the cows. Just like a human, if you keep milking, it will keep coming. Dairies I know sell the calves

- joan on

Seriously, I’m really sick of this vegan thing…

- Siana on

@Joan: You are mistaken about how things work. The cows are kept perpetually pregnant and given tons of hormones and antibiotics to force them to produce more milk than they naturally would. If not for that they would not require as much milking. So no it is not the kind service you are trying to make it out to be when farmers milk the cows.

@Siana: Why should you care how other people choose to eat or what they choose to feed their child? It doesn’t affect your life in any way.

@Biddie: Yes breastmilk comes from humans, who are technically considered animals. But humans are not exploited in the process of producing breastmilk. It’s the exploitation, and mistreatment of animals that vegans object to when it comes to dairy, it’s not the milk itself that is really the issue.

- Rose-2 on

You can get milk that is rBST free which means there are no added hormones! It’s actually been proven that the hormones in foods are making our children go through puberty at a faster rate! It’s quite easy to be knowledgeable of the foods you put into your body and no you don’t have to be a vegan or a vegetarian to make smarter choices about the foods you consume. But by being a vegan you change your complete lifestyle not just how you eat!

- JMO on

Is his name really Bear? :(

- Shannon on

Poor cute kid. Horrible, horrible name. *shakes head*

- Mandy on

Would people let his name and the whole hate vegans crap go? Just shut up about it. They aren’t going to change because some bitter people like Shannon can’t accept that the world doesn’t revolve around them

- Molly on

cute baby, terrible name! poor little guy. perhaps i’m a little biased because i think she sucks.

- katie on

Katie aka Mina, just shut up . Thanks

- Molly on

While I dont love the name I do think its kind of fitting and cute on him. To me he does look like a sweet little bear cub.

- Holiday on

Wow. It isn’t wrong to eat meat or drink milk from a cow people. Its sad that some animals get abused and there should be something done about it but hey what are you to do? People can’t just quit eating something they enjoy to please you. Also, Animals eat other animals and so on as a chain reaction. It is what it is, deal with it.

- Samantha on

I’d also like to add I can’t believe the celeb people continuing to name their kids odd ball names. I think its ridiculous and they all need some help.

- Samantha on

Love her approach to keeping it real and not getting sucked into the world of commercalisim….as to cows milk only being for calfs etc…I suggest you tune into some nature doco’s especially David Attenborough because as you will learn animals drink other animals milk, due to survival instincts.

- jus on

Holiday: note that he will not be a “cub” forever.

- soph on

Beautiful baby! Great name for a dog. Maybe he will call him self BB.

- judi devoe on

I am a lifetime Vegan and of course thought as a Mom I would raise my children vegan. I was really in turmoil over their lack of choice in the matter, so by the time they were eating solid food I had chosen to allow THEM the right to choose. SO both of my Sons now grown- chose a meat eating life- having never been forced to be vegan but given the opportunity. I still believe I made the right choice by allowing them to choose. I wish other parents with alternative lifestyles would consider that THEIR choice is not necessarily the choice the child will embrace.

- ParrotsX3 on

Way to go ParrotsX3! That was very open minded of you to allow your sons the opportunity to make their own decisions on the matter. :)

Nicole Richie and Toby Maguire should take your advice too.

- fuzibuni on

fuzibuni,

Why should Nicole Richie and Tobey Maguire take her advice?

Parents are allowed to raise their children however they want, and a vegan diet has been proven to be the healthiest, so what is so wrong about forcing your child to eat a healthy and moral diet?

When I have kids, meat and dairy won’t even be allowed in my home. My home, my rules.

- M on

Wow, that poor kid with his poor name. Seriously though??? Bear Blu!?!?! My friend’s dog’s name is Bear.

- J'sMommy on

M, I’m truly sorry to break it to you, but veganism is not a very healthy diet. It may be a “kind diet” and it may be “moral” but it lacks a lot of the nutrients children need to grow up healthy and strong. Vitamin supplements just aren’t the same and are hard for the liver to process.

Left to their own devices, almost every child will naturally gravitate toward eating an omnivorous diet. Please don’t promote veganism for children. If a grown adult wants to make that kind of decision, it is up to them and they can take responsibility for the health consequences. But it is not right to force your children to follow an unnatural diet just because you feel righteous about it.

- fuzibuni on

Don’t you dare apologize Biddie. You have every right to ask your question. Just know that on People.com, you are going to ripped a new one, justified or not. :)

- Seether on

re:fuzibuni

You have to be kidding me! How is vegan unnatural?? Vegans eat plant based foods that grow naturally in the earth. How is eating an animal natural and healthy? Our bodies are not meant to eat animals or consume animal products. Read up on slaughterhouses and see how the animals are treated. Why you would even want to consume an animal after putting it through all that stress is beyond me. They are living in bad, unsanitary conditions with diseases. You want to eat animal after that then go ahead.. but don’t say it’s healthy.

We live in a world where we can get adequate protein from the earth instead of animals.. and to say that eating meat is the only way to be healthy is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard. Try educating yourself before you make any comments.

- bioya on

Bioya,

At first I was going to let your statements go, because I’ve said all this in other threads and I’m reluctant to repeat myself. But I decided to give it a go while I wait for my dinner of free range chicken to finish cooking.

You wrote: “You have to be kidding me! How is vegan unnatural??”

Point to one vegan civilization in the history of mankind.

You wrote: “Our bodies are not meant to eat animals or consume animal products.”

Our entire digestive system and our teeth are specifically designed to eat meat AND almost anything else we can find. Humans are distinctly omnivorous. It’s one of the reasons our species has flourished.

You wrote: “Read up on slaughterhouses and see how the animals are treated. Why you would even want to consume an animal after putting it through all that stress is beyond me.”

I’ve read up. I’m aware. It turned me vegan for a bit before I saw my health decline and started eating meat again. I agree that there is much to be improved with the quality of American meats and the way many farm animals are treated.

I try to put my money where my mouth is and purchase foods that are free of antibiotics, hormones, and pesticides. The more people purchase these types of foods, the more the market will change and so will the quality of life for the animals. Avoiding meat altogether makes little impact on the treatment of these animals.

I realize you truly believe that eating animal products is unhealthy, unethical and inhumane. I doubt I’m going to change your mind. However, I’m here to tell you that despite what you may think, your body needs certain nutrients from animal products for optimal health. You will survive without them, but make no mistake… your body will pay the price, especially long term.

- fuzibuni on

shes not a hypocrit for letting her son drink her milk which is ment for him it would be idiotic to assume that vegans cant have breast milk seriously youre an idiot

- me on

@ Adrienne – hahaha your comment cracked me up, I love it!! I agree, I’ve loved the name ever since I heard it – reminds me of the outdoor adventurist on the Discovery Channel. Very outdoorsy and organic!!

I’m exactly the opposite on the baby front – I love my own, but can’t stand other babies, haha! Their slobber grosses me out, aaahhh!! J/K (sort of), but I can appreciate precious babies when I see them, and Bear is definitely precious!!

On the flip side, guys, I honestly don’t know why everyone has such an opinion over what Alicia decides to feed her baby and whether or not the vegan lifestyle is the way to go. She’ll either decide to nurse or formula feed – and either way, her baby will be perfectly healthy. As for later in life, I’m sure, as a mom, Alicia will feed what she instincively feels are the healthiest foods for her child.

- missy :) on

M,
If you are the same M that I think you are…..I am thrilled to here you don’t have children and I hope you don’t ever have children. It would be a shame for them to grow up in a household with such ignorance.

- Jillian on

I have a friend who is also a vegan. She has 3 beautiful healthy boys! According to her vegan beliefs, they do no eat anything that has been fertilized (meaning by an egg and sperm) so breast feeding is not allowed. Her children were given soy milk from day 1. I don’t know how she does it but their diet consist of fruits, veggies, soy and tofu.

- Sandrice on

Good grief, don’t worry about what she feeds her baby! It’s HER baby. People LOVE to judge when really they just need to piss off.

- St.Ephanie on

St.Ephanie,

Yes, Bear is her child and she gets to make the decision on what to feed him. Personally, I think it’s dangerous, but she is the one who gets to live with that. I also feel bad for kids who’s parents feed them junk food… but that’s not my business either.

My issue with the vegan thing is when people promote it as being the healthiest and most natural diet. Alicia wrote an entire book about it. And Emily Deschanel has been promoting her vegan pregnancy to the public as well.

So yeah, go ahead and be vegan. Your life, your body. Just don’t broadcast misinformation to the general public.

- fuzibuni on

Sandrice, your friend isn’t the only one. Being a vegan is not a one size fits all choice apparently.

I think logic would dictate breastfeeding your infant, if possible, as others have mentioned that the mother has full consent and the milk is specific to that child. Your body clearly produces milk for your infant, just as it provides the egg and all the processes of pregnancy.

Nonetheless, some babies end up on soy formula, if they are lucky, or a “milk” that is entirely deficient in nutrients for a little person growing so fast. Vegan moms need to take care during pregnancy and breastfeeding to get the right combo of foods or risk malnutrition. Same can be said for chips, soda, snack cakes and salami based diet.

- Leslee on

OMG…he is such a cute little guy!! Congrats to Alicia and her husband for bringing such a sweet and precious gift into this world.

To everyone that was bashing on “biddie” about not knowing if she is breast feeding or not, why does everyone have to be so mean? that person just asked a question they didn’t know the answer to. If you have a problem with the question then just ignore it. Do you really have to put up here that this person is an “idiot” or is “retarded”? When will everyone just grow up and celebrate this little bundle of joy? Why must we judge and hate on people all of the time?

- Colleen on

Bear is a real cutie and he looks just like his momma. I wouldn”t chooose that name for my baby but it is much better than Pilot Inspector! The worse Hollywood baby name ever. Wow this site has sunk to a new low. Someone asks a question and is called retarded, nice. If it’s not working mom vs SAHM it’s something else. Why as women do we have to be so mean to each other.

- Heather on

My nickname for my husband is Bear because he scratches his back on the corner of the wall, just like a bear does on a tree. One of the beauties of being a parent is naming your child. Most people grow up liking their name, whatever it is, and the few that don’t, legally change it or live with it. That is one stinkin’ cute baby!

- Melissa on

They couldnt look more alike, wow!

- meredith on

Bear Blu is a terrible name..but he’s cute and she looks great so..congrats!

- anna on

I would bet that “Bear” is in for a lot of health problems thanks to a vegan diet imposed by his well-meaning, but out-to-lunch Mom. I’m sure he’ll never see public-school, so that should minimize the number of times he is beaten up by his classmates for carrying the idiotic name Hollyweird parents seem to insist on giving their offspring these days.

At the same time, without meat and dairy, “Bear” will most likely end up undersized for his age, “sickly” and anemic. I have a left-wing, tree-hugging cousin who named her son “Thade” (another winning name! NOT!) whom she insisted on raising vegan for “health” reasons.

I raised my kids, two boys (Ages 3 & 5) on wild game, I harvested myself (moose, caribou, geese, ducks, rabbits & tarmigan), along with eggs, poulty, pork, beef, and milk we raised ourselves on my hobby farm.

My youngest, Caleb at age 3 is a good 7 inches taller than “Thade”, has about 20 lbs of muzcle on him and when they play, can basically wrap his older cousin (age 7) in knots at will. My oldest, Ryan, at age 5, is more than a head taller than his two-year olders cousin.

Neither of my boys have been seriously ill, other than a cold or flu once or twice a year, as it makes its rounds through their pre-schools/kindergarten.

Thade, on the other hand, is constantly ill and frail looking. He has dark hollows under his eyes, is listless and lacks the energy or strength to keep up with his cousins. He has all sorts of allergies and is constantly on all sorts of medications. His pediatrician now has him on iron supplements in order to counter his severe anemia. His mother, however, still firmly believes that her child is the healthier because his diet is 100% vegan.

Humans evolved as omnivores. We are meant to eat both meat and vegetables. We did not evolve canine teeth because were meant to only eat veggies. If we had, we’d have much stronger teeth that were better suited to grinding and mulching plants.

To my mind, what my cousin is doing to her child, by forcing him to be a vegan, is just as bad as any commercial, corporate farm forcing dairy cows to remain constantly pregnant or rasing hens in a 1′X1′ square cage. Just like those animals, her kid has no choice in his diet or how he is raised. Our family, including her parents object to the way she is raising her son. It is now reaching the point, health-wise, that her own parents are considering getting social workers involved.

If you’re an adult and wish to practice veganism, fine and good. However, don’t make such a radical decision for your kids, especially during their “formative” years when they NEED that protein, fat and calcium from meat and dairy to grow tall and strong. AND, stop naming your kids “Bear,” “Apple,” “Audio Science,” “Kal-EL,” “Pilot Inspektor” or “Thade!” They have to carry those idiotic names for the rest of their lives, or until they can have them legally changed.

- Sean on

Sean, it sounds like your cousin just isn’t doing a very good job at the vegan diet. There are ways to be healthy and vegan/vegetarian. My brother was raised a vegetarian and was a defensive lineman on the football team, so it can be done. We weren’t sickly, weak kids and still aren’t sickly, weak adults. Your cousin clearly needs to be educated on how to get her child the proper nutrients. The problem here is your cousin, not veganism.

As for the whole “forcing” thing, to be honest, I think that’s a ridiculous argument. Parents always “force” their lifestyle on their children – it’s called raising your child. Isn’t taking your child to church and feeding them meat also “forcing” your beliefs on your child? I have never met a parent in this world who doesn’t force their beliefs on their child and I probably never will.

- Sarah K. on

I happen to live on and run a dairy farm. And I assure you that most of the posts regarding the treatment and care of the animals are completely false! Most milk companies (at least in PA)will not even buy your milk if it has any kind of hormones or medications. Our milk company has signed agreements from their farmers stating that there’s nothing given to the cows.

When a cow gives birth, she is milked and yes, the baby is taken away, however we feed all of our calves their mother’s milk from a bottle until they are weaned onto feed. Dairy cows (and sometimes humans) produce more milk than their baby can consume in a feeding and as a mother who nursed, I can assure you that it is painful and causes you to pretty much beg for relief. Our cows want to be milked and will often come to the barn without being forced. And “raping” a cow seems a bit far-fetched…we do it the old fashioned way…we have bulls in our herd. If the bull doesn’t get the job done, we don’t do it for them. I’m not saying that there aren’t farmers out there who are just looking at a paycheck but I am saying that the nasty comments are not justified in most cases.

If you’re concerned about what’s in your milk, buy natural whole milk from dairys or farmers who don’t use anything but organic feeds. I have no problems with peoples food/lifestyle choices, it’s the people who post negative and uneducated comments on things that I do have a problem with. And like a previous poster said…the food chain is a food chain for a reason, otherwise people and animals would starve. She had a beautiful baby boy and is following what she feels is best for him. End of story!

- Megan on

I’m really saddened by people’s use of the word “retard”. Our daughter has Down Syndrome, and she is absolutely perfect. Please don’t throw that word around at each other- it hurts.

Also, I have a good friend who is raising her son vegan due to some health issues he had. He is thriving, adorable, chubby little legs, and very content. I think it’s silly to say that vegan kids have deficiencies or aren’t as healthy when they eat such pure, unprocessed whole foods. We are actually trying to incorporate more vegetarian meals into our lives and give our kids “clean” foods to improve their health since they were adopted from a poor orphanage and lack certain nutrients.

I don’t think mudslinging and judging each other’s decisions is kind when all we should be here for is to comment on an adorable baby and a glowing mama. I know several people (a couple of them are Native American) who gave their children names like Bear, Wolf, River & Eagle, and it’s not for us to judge because it has meaning to them.

- Kari on

Kari I think it is awful when people in here use the word “retarded” as a derogatory comment and I am sorry you have to hear that by uneducated and insensitive people. I am sure your daughter is just lovely!

- Holiday on

Kristen – YOU sound like an idiot. “We are the only species ignorant enough to use another animal as a wet nurse”. What mothers do you surround yourself that give their NEWBORNS cowsmilk? Thats what formula is for, you moron.

- Willy on

Oh Kristen, so angry. Get off your soap box and go have a burger. Cooked RARE.

- Willy on

Everyone should read Megan’s comment.

- Willy on

megan i totally agree with you. i too live on a dairy farm. we don’t use anything to make the cows give more milk. yes the calves are taken away but we actually keep the heifers to keep the herd population up. and alot of our cows have been milking way longer than 5 years as someone else suggested. they all get to go outside and graze everyday. people who think they know everything about dairy farms should check their facts before they start running off at the mouth.

- jennifer on

The world is becoming more vegan and carnivorous folk can’t take it. Tough. Deal with it.

- Stephanie on

If she nurses or gives formula, who really cares? It is obvious that he is healthy. Congrats to you! He is beautiful!

- Melissa on

It is a cruel and unusual punishment to deny a human baby human breast milk and feed it milk meant for calves (who happen to have four stomachs by the way). No matter how you chemically synthesize baby formula it will be no match for the real thing. Nowadays many women are selling their extra breast milk for those mothers who are unable to produce their own. I hope this system is encouraged to grow.

As for adult consumption of cow milk, it is unnecessary and even harmful in the long term when consumed in the massive quantities you Westerners are used to. Remember that the countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis are the ones with highest dairy consumption. It is just an extremely unnatural food when you stop to think of it. We might as well be milking chimpanzees seeing as they are genetically closer to us.

Oh and Megan: perhaps you are an angel to your cows, but you have no proof that “most” dairy farmers are like you. There are too many reports of cruelty on dairy farms for this to be a mere rumor.

- Mila on

He is adorable! Love the hair. She looks great and so happy. Wow what vicious bunch of vultures on here, poor biddie, I think that her comment was reasonable. When a person does not know about a topic they as to be enlightened not attacked by a vicious back of vultures wolves.

- Jes on

Mila,

If you happen to read this; it is in response to your comment, “It is a cruel and unusual punishment to deny a human baby human breast milk and feed it milk meant for calves (who happen to have four stomachs by the way).”

I do not know if you have had to deal with all situations and until you do stop all the judgements. Eight years ago my daughter was born and I solely breast feed for 2 months and my daughter started to decline in weight so drastically that she became non-thirivng. From the beginning I went to lactation consultant after lactation consultant and they said that I did not produce enough even after trying to increase my milk supply with pumps and everyihtng else. I got lots of wonderful breast milk donated from frineds and the la leche league, but she was still not gaining weight.

My nurse practitioner finally deduced my daughter was allergic to both dairy and soy. I eliminated both from my diet and still nursed, but I didn’t produce enough still. I could not use donated breast milk becasue of her allergies, so I had a perscription for pre-digested formula for her. Between the breast milk and the formula she thirved. I was not cruel. You tell me what you would have done. Watching your child wither in front of you and then not knowing why you alone can’t provide for her, is an experience I do not wish upon anyone. Everyone stop judging others!

Fuzibuni & Sean – you guys get my vote! Well said, and seemingly well educated on human evolution (Never met a Vegan caveman, and likely we wouldn’t be here to bitch about all this if they had been).

Well, after reading all this controversy about veganism and babies being fed and why being a vegan is good or not, there is only one thing that I have to say: Humans in order to LIVE need vitamin B12. B12 is found only in animals. Our days they grow a certain yeast that vegans can eat so their brain function well and they dont get anemia…..or run to the dr and get a B12 shot (Is that normal???). there are no reliable vegetarian sourses of vit b12. this man made lifestyle makes me sick.
Animals are treated bad, I agree, but educate yourself about what is your goverment doing in order to meet the food supply needed to all 300 mil americans and keep the prices low on food. I bet 99.9% of all vegans in the world live in US :)
Humans are made to eat animal and plant products.Just like all others mammals… anatomy and physiology of the human body is available online in great detail, just read and find out more abouot how your body works.

And pls ppl, choose whole foods, free of pesticides, antibio, hormones and all the crap, and we can make a change this way.

If my ancesters would have chosen to be vegans because the love for all the animals, I know for sure i wouldnt be here today …

All babies are cute, adooorable, congrats to the mom and dad and hope that the baby will eventualy eat some good cheese and an egg from a happy chick!

Mila,
Of course you would say that there are too many reports saying that farmers are cruel to their animals because that is the more interesting and controversial approach.
Humane and kind dairy farmers that treat their animals with respect aren’t exciting and wouldnt make it into articles and books now would they?
Just like celebrity gossip, people go after the “interesting” and hard hitting information and generalize it be what “most farmers” are like.
As someone who was raised and grown up on a dairy farm with hundreds of cows, pigs, chicken and sheep. I can tell you now that “most” farmers do not subject their animals to cruel and unusual punishment.
Our cows and animals are not only our livelihood but we care about them as well.
They were created by God for consumption and without steroids, chemicals or drugs injected in them, they are amazing for the human body.

Kristen-chill the heck ouuuut!

@mila, I read something above from sandrice, she said as follows: “I have a friend who is also a vegan. She has 3 beautiful healthy boys! According to her vegan beliefs, they do no eat anything that has been fertilized (meaning by an egg and sperm) so breast feeding is not allowed. Her children were given soy milk from day 1. I don’t know how she does it but their diet consist of fruits, veggies, soy and tofu.”

I believe that this is really cruel and unnatural, as well as inmoral. I don’t mean to offend anyone but this radical lifestyles will be taking a toll in our civilization somehow.

So…I thought veganism was a peaceful way of life.

However, by the looks of all the rage in these responses, I was grossly mistaken.
