Jewel: Pregnancy Is a Privilege I’m Enjoying

Jewel is expecting her baby boy with husband Ty Murray any day now — but don’t expect her to freak out about losing her baby weight when it’s all over.

“I’m feeling really great and enjoying pregnancy much more than I thought I would,” the musician, 37, tells Fit Pregnancy in their latest issue.

“I didn’t know what to expect, every woman is different and you hear such horror stories. But I also heard that you should try to enjoy it, so I took that to heart and tried not to fret about weight gain or anything else.”

And, she adds, despite its drawbacks, “Pregnancy is a privilege, and I feel lucky that I get to do it. It’s kind of sad that men don’t.”

Jewel, host of Bravo’s music competition show Platinum Hit, also reveals she has a healthy attitude towards weight gain during pregnancy.

“Well, you’re supposed to gain up to 35 pounds, and now I’m at 30 weeks and I’ve gained 30 pounds,” she explains during the interview, conducted in May.

“The first several months I hardly gained anything, then it happened fast. I don’t know how I could control that – I have a healthy diet, I don’t eat sugar. I think your body has its own wisdom and as long as you are doing the best you can, you just have to find a balance.”

The only post-baby diet she’s considering these days is the nursing plan — which some mothers find burns many extra calories — and says her first priority will be her newborn son.

“As far as losing the weight, I’m hoping that breastfeeding does the job, but I won’t be neurotic about it, about working out right away,” she says. “I am capable of that but I’m going to cut myself lots of slack. I want to give myself time to rest and heal and tend to my new baby for a month or so, and then I will definitely get back into a workout routine.”

Asked if she and her rodeo-star husband — whom she married in the Bahamas in 2008 — are proponents of breastfeeding, Jewel says, “We plan on it. I was ranch-raised and believe in it because I’ve seen what it does for animals.”

“But I don’t have any judgment about it, and I don’t think it should be contentious — I see great moms both ways,” she adds. “It’s amazing how intolerant the discussions on the Internet can be.”

Jewel also offers some advice for other first-time moms that she’s found to be helpful during her own pregnancy.

“Knowledge really is power,” she says. “The more you can educate yourself, the better. Your body and your health are your responsibility. I love doctors, but I have to live with the decisions I make. Make sure you get your questions answered, and never feel that you are doubting your doctor by asking a question — a good doctor won’t feel that way, either.”

Such an awesome interview!! I love Jewel and have so much respect for her.

I know that becoming parents has not been easy for her and Ty and I am so excited for them as they prepare to welcome their son 🙂

Can’t wait to see picture and see what they name the little guy, I am sure he is going to be a total cutie!!

Wow, I really hope PEOPLE plans to have her as a celebrity blogger when the baby is born…she has a great attitude and a lot of common sense!

Thank you for saying that pregnancy is a privilege that some people aren’t blessed with. So many don’t realize it and can be cruel in their words for those that aren’t lucky this way.

I wish you, Ty and your baby all the best the world has to offer. He’s one lucky little fellow to have such wonderful parents.

She’s absolutely GLOWING!

Congratulations to the couple and best wishes to Jewel for an easy

El on

She seems nice and I wish her family the best but I laughed at “going to take it easy yada yada, a whole MONTH”.

Kimberly on

I can’t believe she is still pregnant! lol! seems like she has been knocked up forever! But she looks great and really happy!

“Pregnancy is a privledge.”

Thank you, Jewel. It’s nice to hear a celebrity say that.

@el…. she said she’s going to take it easy for a month then start working on it. she didn’t say she thinks she’ll lose it that quickly. but for once, at least the comments are all positive. that doesn’t happen often.

Great comments on Jewel’s part…but yes, I also giggled when I read that she was not going to be neurotic and would like to take it easy…for a whole month!

it does seem like she has been pregnant FOREVER……

This lady has always been such a class act in an industry full of no talent trash.

Good for her and her husband.

What a refreshing outlook on pregnancy and childbirth coming from a celeb. Although she doesn’t seem like a “celeb”, just a down to earth girl next door. Can’t wait to hear of the arrival of the little one, it does seem like she’s been preggo forever, lol!

My doctor told me to rest, feed the baby, change diapers myself when I felt like it (otherwise let someone else do it), and just relax for about 3 weeks. After that, begin to exercise, drink plenty of water, eat healthy, and the weight would come off. I ate well during pregnancy, and gained about 30 lbs, and within a month after baby, I was back to my normal size 6. I didn’t overdo while pregnant, and I didn’t go crazy after the baby was born.

This helped me avoid post-partum depression, and bond with the baby, as well as feel a lot better physically than I did after baby #1, when I was cleaning house, taking care of baby and doing everything myself, because “that’s the way women used to do it when they had babies”. I ended up with post-partum depression and while I may have lost the weight quickly, I was a crying, sobbing wreck.

With a vaginal delivery, you don’t need to just lay around and hold the baby for more than 3 weeks; after that, you need to be more active, physically and mentally. And yes, that last one almost had to be held and cuddled constantly! I had 3 in 4 years, and with the last, I really had my hands full, but being active and busy with my kids helped me be tuned into them, and get healthy and in good physical shape, all at once.

My first thought was ‘is she still pregnant?’ too…have a safe birth and a healthy baby Jewel!

She looks absolutely GORGE in this pic…love the dress and her glow is envious!

Gotta feel a little bad for Jewel. Out of all the pregnancies this year, she had to compete with Mariah and Pink, and even getting into a car accident while pregnant didn’t garner her much attention.

Yay!!!! fir Jewel. So happy for her!

I agree Indira. Lol it’s as if she has read this site. But I totally agree with her.

I think Jewel looks great! I’m sure she and her husband will be great parents 🙂

CelebBabyBlogAddict on

She’s got a great attitude and seems very sensible and down to earth. I think she will make a great celeb mother 🙂

@Me: If a person is having a baby for the right reasons then they won’t care about getting attention.

Nichole on

I love her grateful attitude. I tried to be super positive when I was pregnant, too, and it made all the difference!

Jewel you are the first star I totally agree with about the baby weigh & breast feeding, it’s a mother’s choice not what other people think. So what if you have extra weigh after baby, just enjoy that precious bundle of joy the good Lord has given you & Ty. You will be awesome parents. If you need a baby sitter I don’t live far away from you. LOL God bless you all & may your labor be short & easy. Connie

@forevermore Of what is her glow envious?

e on

i gained 50, lost 65 with nursing, 35 isn’t the be all end all for weight, so mommas if you gain more (while eating healthy), no worries.

Jewels fresh and light approach is refreshing, add her BF comments to Pink’s the other day, its nice to have celeb mommas making nursing more normal and accepted. Good role models for all of us, even the ones where Bfing doesn’t work out.

Emily on

I love this woman! She seems so down to earth and has an angel’s voice. Congrats to her and her hubby.

Maggie on

Me, I don’t think Jewel WANTS the attention. She’s been at home in Texas since the Grammys. I’m sure if she wanted to she could be out and about in LA getting photographed every day.

I really enjoy her, she seems like someone I’d be friends with. Can’t wait to see what they name their baby boy.

Rose-2, I liked your comment and think its relevance extends beyond this post to other celebs we see featured on this site from time to time…

ecl on

Pregnancy is NOT always a privilege. For some women, it is a burden.

emily on

ecl- then don’t get pregnant. You CAN control it, right? If a pregnancy is a burden, taking care of a child for 18+ years is sure to be one as well.

ecl on

Emily, I already had a baby and don’t consider him a burden. I wasn’t talking about myself, but then I am an upper middle class white woman who has access to health care, birth control, and hasn’t been coerced into having sex, same as Jewel. Just don’t like the generalization that ALL women should be happy to carry babies.

Toya L. on

Awesome interview, along with great advice.

M on

@ecl While I’d agree that *being* pregnant is not a privilege for some (I’m sure some women who have been abused/raped may consider it a burden), the *ability* to get pregnant it a privilege. I think that’s what Jewel was trying to say.
