MTV’s Americaโ€™s Best Dance Crew Insidersย host Layla Kayleigh is letting readers follow along as she tackles motherhood.

Layla and her boyfriend Steven Covino‘s daughter Melody Rain is now 18 months old!

In her newest blog, Layla fills us in on the latest with her toddler (running and saying “no!”), shares photos and asks for your advice on dealing with “the mean kid” at the playground.

Melody has been keeping me so busy the last few months! Ever since she started walking, I feel like I have been running around like a madwoman trying to prevent all types of potential accidents. She is so fast, it’s like she’s Speedy Gonzales and I’m Sylvester chasing after her.

I had no idea that at this age, our little toddlers have such strong personalities — she’s like a proper little person! It’s unbelievable. For example, when I go to dress her she’ll clearly express to me she doesn’t like something. She shakes her head at me and says “No!” So I try to give her choices instead of her just thinking she can say no to everything. If I say, “Melody, do you want to wear this shirt or that shirt?” she’ll point to the one she likes best — same with food.

The weather has been so nice in California this month, so we’ve been taking her on lots of adventures. We went to a state park and she’s been going to the beach a lot, which she loves. (See photos!)

Something that has been new to me is watching Melody play and interact with other kids. I had my first mean kid experience a few weeks back — there was a child that Melody was trying to play with at the park, and the older girl was snatching Melody’s toys and telling her she didn’t want to play with her, but that Melody couldn’t play with her own toys!

Although Melody is too young to understand exactly what was going on, as a mom I felt so sad seeing another kid be mean to my kid! I totally froze and didn’t know how to handle it. Initially my protective instincts kicked in, but then I had to tell myself the girl is just a child too, and I can’t be telling off someone else’s kid — that’s not my place either.

After having to mentally check myself, I nicely said to the other girl, “Melody likes you and would love to share her toys and play with you. Do you want to play with us?”

But it just got me thinking — how do you deal with this issue when the kids are a bit older and have to deal with mean kids and bullying? There’s such a fine line between protecting our children and giving them the tools they need to learn how to stand up for themselves … I know I’m not really there yet with Melody because she’s so young, however it did get my wheels turning.

Would love to hear your stories and the way you’ve handled these sensitive situations. I could use the advice for the future! ๐Ÿ™‚

I can totally relate to this about feeling like a chicken running around chasing a 2 year old. It has kept me from gaining weight which is ok with me. But I am exhausted by the time Megs goes to bed!! I wouldnt trade this time though for all the Gold in China!! I am a 43 year old first time mom with a 2 year old and I feel great except for staying a bit tired, I never thought the terrible two’s could be so entertaining with the way she is learning things good and bad. Her favorite word for anything is NO even when she means yes!! LOL She makes up her own dance moves and sings along with the car radio so I will say these are the best times!!!

She looks like a mini Covino and Rich is next!

I love that you give her a choice of things, such a good way to teach a kid to start making decisions within appropriate options. She sounds like a happy, healthy little girl! I’d say there is no way Covino has a kid that cute, but it’s pretty hard to deny she’s his!

Wonderful article. She’s a mini El Covino… Make sure to cherish her as the grow up very fast.

She’s such a cutie! It’s undeniable who her daddy is ๐Ÿ˜‰

She only needs a huge pomp to look exactly like her father, it’s like Layla had nothing to do with her conception. Mary had god’s son without intercourse, Covino had his daughter without a women…..

OMG… she is sooo cute!!

layla….when it comes to kids being mean to one another…you hit it on the head…they are all kids…In my experience, its usually the parent I end up having to talk to about their kids behavior…you did the right thing by inviting the child to interact..I recently took my 4 yr old to a carnival in CT and she wanted to get on a ride that sat two the front. there was another little girl ahead of my child who apparantly wanted to go in the front as well..when it was time to get on the ride the little girl got right in the front. Now my baby is all personality so she basically stood right by the side of the door in the front and was NOT budging…the attendant told the little girl to move over…she did not look happy but complied…I was waiting for anything…Children react in all different ways..from hitting to pushing to pulling hair to even spitting…when they are not pleased or did not get their I was waiting to see..thank goodness the little girl simply moved over with a face…her mom however made a comment (of never fails when my kid is…SHE said…jeez there are other cars for that kid to go in…I simply turned around and said..your right…but my little girl likes to be the leader of the pack..she goes upfront…was I wrong? Who knows..could I have ignored her..yeah probably…but Ignorance is taught…and some of us dont stay shut…so you do you…protect your daughter, use wisdom and pray that the decisions you make will always have positive consequences…At the end the kids just want to have fun, get some attention and be loved…Your daughter is beautiful God Bless…Nina
