Pregnant Selma Blair Satiates Her Sweet Tooth

PR Photos

Not only has Selma Blair‘s body changed during her pregnancy, but her palate has too.

“For a while I was craving things that were really sweet, but I don’t eat sugar and I don’t eat gluten so it’s difficult,” she tells PEOPLE.

“I crave a lot of fruit and I eat far too much dairy, which I didn’t eat before I was pregnant and won’t eat after I give birth, but I’m enjoying it now.”

Attending the Marquee Dayclub opening in Las Vegas, the Hellboy star said the pregnancy is going “perfectly well” and that she’s due this summer. She does, however, suffer from insomnia these days.

“I think Vegas is the answer for pregnant people because of insomnia,” Blair, 38, laughs.

“It’s open all the time and you go down and play your silly slots … It’s nice to have people up when I am right now. It’s a rare thing. And there is always food.”

Though she’s happy to share her sleepless nights with others, there is one thing she is keeping to herself: Whether she and boyfriend Jason Bleick are having a boy or girl. Then again, Blair’s not completely sure that she knows either.

“I think I know,” she said. “I don’t do ultrasounds — I’m using a midwife so I don’t have all the information other mothers-to-be have.”

I’ve never seen more media attention on Selma Blair (mainly gossip sites and pap photos, but all the same…) since this pregnancy become public knowledge and she isn’t even starring in anything at the moment!!! Granted, all the attention is on her clothes and maternity fashion-sense, as opposed to her acting chops, but I hope her agent/manager exploits the h*ll out of it to keep her in mind for future projects…

- rudi on

^^ nice to hear a positive take on this. As a fan of Selma, I agree. However, I am ultimately tired of celebrities sharing their cravings and stuff. I mean… ZZZZZZZZ

- kai on

sheesh, no dairy, no sugar, no gluten…what does she normally eat?
and no ultrasounds? other “moms to be” using midwives have access to ultrasounds.

- Anonymous on

I wish she would share me more specifically what she does eat, I have to follow a hypoglycemic and gluten free diet and I’m always looking for new recipes. As for dairy…I’d die without cheese!

If she thinks she knows the sex I’m gonna say boy, I swear boys always seem to give the mom a stronger vibe, those who have girls always say they don’t have a feeling either way. Can’t wait to find out either way!

- jessicad on

@anonymous it is possible to eat a healthy diet without any dairy, gluten, and sugar. Mine goes further and includes no meat, no soy, and no pasta other than brown rice pasta. You would be amazed at all of the foods that are still left after eliminating all of those. Sure you can’t eat fast food anymore but why would you to begin with.

- kristen on

If she’s not getting the information she needs, it sounds like she needs a new midwife. Just seems like a weird comment to me.

- Jennifer on

Anyone wanting to know how Hollywood keeps thin, Selma just told us: no wheat, no sugar, no dairy.

- Stella Bella on

kai, does it ever occur to you that the celebs get asked the questions. they don’t just volunteer information. and no, midwives do not use ultrasounds usually, Jennifer.

- mitzi on

Actually, midwives do order ultrasounds. I had a midwife and had two ultrasounds during my pregnancy.

- Bonnie on

Sounds like she is going the homebirth route. If a midwife is working with a hospital, they might use ultrasound equipment… but most often when they have their own practices they don’t.

Ultrasounds are ubiquitous these days, but up until a few decades ago, no one had access to them. When my mom was pregnant, her obgyn didn’t offer it because he said it was too new and he didn’t quite trust it (or maybe he just didn’t want to buy the machine lol). She ended up having twins, but no one knew until she delivered the first one… their heartbeats had been perfectly in sync in utero.

After the first was delivered, the doctor was washing up, and the nurses had to bring him back into the delivery room for the second one! In retrospect, my mom said it was probably for the best that she didn’t know earlier… because she would have freaked out the whole pregnancy ;)

UGLY DRESS

- marina on

I think Selma Blair is absolutely adorable. But I laugh at these celebrities who won’t eat x, y, or z but smoke. And I’m not saying she smokes during her pregnancy, just saying she did in the past.

She looks great!

- woo2 on

mitzi, you don’t have to answer every question. I don’t want to rag on her (as I said, I’m a fan), I just don’t care for this kind of fluff interview.

- kai on

Even though she’s been acting for years (assuming, based on her age), I can’t name a single movie off the top of my head – probably due to her low profile and minimal media coverage.

As a previous poster indicated, I’ve also noticed that she’s in the gossip press all the time now since she announced the pregnancy. I wish they would focus on more than her clothes and what she eats. How about upcoming projects???

- rudi on

Cruel Intentions and Legally Blond are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head…. For some reason I can only name ones that also featured Reese Witherspoon.

- Stella Bella on

Why does she always hunch over? If she is going to be at public events she should at least stand up straight. I have always thought she was interesting but this has been a pet peeve about her I don’t like! And, yes I know it is nit-picky but I still feel that way!

- Amy Y on

@ Marina: GIRL! You are so right.

Having been vegan in the past, there are many food options for those who cut out specific things. Admittedly it’s hard in the beginning, but once you get it down – or cook for yourself – it’s easy to manage.

Selma Blair movies off the top of my head: Hellboy and Cruel Intentions.

- Jen DC on

She’s not a very well known actress, but this pregnancy is giving her a lot of attention. That happend to a few other celebs like her, they become pregnant and they are way more in the media than ever. I know a few of her movies, but she always seems to have smaller roles.

Anyways, I respect her eating habits, after all it’s her body and her choice. Maybe she just can’t eat certain foods for health reasons…Personally I just couldn’t restrict myself so much like she seems to be, it just doesn’t seem very fun haha. You can still be healthy and have pasta, dairy and even sweets sometimes, but just eat in moderation and keep yourself physically active,I’m not overweight and perfectly healthy and that’s what I’ve been doing for most of my life, but again I understand everyone is different.

- Nella on

Amy, maybe she can’t stand straight up. Not everyone has a straight back.

- dsfg on

I can’t tell if you guys are kidding or if midwifery is somehow considered ‘alternative’ in the US.

The world over, midwives are who deliver babies (at hospitals, homes and birthing centres) and ob/gyns are fantastic people to have as back up in emergencies or for c-sections. I realize that isn’t necessarily the case in the US, but are there really people who think that pregnant women under midwives’ care don’t have any and all screening and diagnostic tests available to them? Of course they do.

Both my children were delivered by midwives and all my tests were a matter of ROUTINE. The World Health Organization takes a more amibiguous view of ultrasounds than do midwives. Midwives are highly trained, experienced medical professionals. If Selma Blair is opting out of tests, that’s entirely her business, but it’s not “because” she is using a midwife. That’s simply incorrect.

- RY on

Loving all the legally blonde babies! Ali Larter, Selma, maybe Reese will soon be a part of the trend? ;)

- Meghan on

I’m not looking for a fight or judging…I’m just confused. So many celebs who’ve declared themselves vegan do an aboutface when pregnant, yet claim they’ll go back once baby arrives. If they are vegan because of animal rights or real health beliefs they wouldn’t flipflop just because of cravings. Why are they vegan in the first place then? Can somebody enlighten me?

- torgster on

I cannot believe it’s 2011 and people are choosing to not have ultrasounds! Why would you put yourself and your child in unnecessary danger? Ultrassounds do no harm to mum or baby, and are so beneficial! This just sounds completly insane to me, especially if she plans to have a homebirth (which is what this sounds like) and she has no clue if this is actually a good option for her baby, if it has any problems, etc.

This is such a Hollywood interpretation of what being healthy means, and as always, they go too far. Do they not realize that before all these exams, yes, people still gave birth, but also, so many more women and children died during birth?

- Mari on

for those who asked, there’s a whole world of foods she can eat. I am 100 percent gluten free and working on becoming 100 percent dairy free because of health issues and allergies. In the beginning it’s hard, but there are many brands emerging of GF products like whole brown rice waffles, noodles, etc. It does kind of force my food choices into me cooking at home though, which is healthier for you anyways. Not such a radical diet, really.

She is looking really good with some pregnancy weight on her. Hope she has a great delivery

- zappo on

@ woo2 That always makes me laugh too! Nice girl works at our neighboorhood Starbucks, and one day she said something in passing to me, about a piece of cake I had gotten my little girl, she and her family including her 4 year old are vegans…next day I was leaving saw her with her kid smoking…yeah blow smoke in her face, but don’t give her an egg! LOL

- Charley on

She looks better in the face with the extra weight. Her baby obviously needs foods/minerals/nutrients that here pre-pregnancy diet lacked; hence the cravings. This is a sign that her regular diet may be too restrictive.

- Shannon on

Amy, I look like that when I stand up straight. I’ve had people tell me to stand up straight and I am. Seems to have something to do with having rounded shoulders and the placement of my neck. Oh well.

- Miche on

Hi Amy, that’s very nice of you. You deserve every single happiness in this world. Thank you for sharing that story… God bless!

- Deborah Northcutt on

I would believe she doesn’t do ultra sounds because really, who knows what kind of an affect they have on a developing fetus??? Maybe that’s why we have so much ADD and ADHD?? She sounds like she’s a person that is very “organic” and wants things natural & w/out use of machines and other procedures that are not necessary.
I’m with her on ultrasounds- especially the scary ones where you can see the baby in 3D!!

- Sandy on

@torgster – Many people choose to eat a vegan diet for health reasons (i.e. Bob Harper, the trainer on Biggest Loser, said he started easting vegan after finding out he had high cholesterol!)

I ate vegan before becoming pregnant simply because I felt better. Dairy and eggs make me ill. Once I became pregnant I CRAVED meat! so I started eating it again. I still eat meat now occasionally but prefer beans and tofu (plus they are just so much cheaper!)

- Laura on

I’m so tired of hearing these celebrities say they don’t eat this and they don’t eat that. Sugar-free, gluten-free, fat-free, taste-free! Whatever! Most of them are following these diets because it’s the “in” thing now. So silly.

- Andrea on

I didn’t have an ultrasound with my pregnancy in 02/03. And I had a midwife, but wound up with a c-section anyway. I didn’t see any purpose for the ultrasound. No risk factors, no abnormal blood tests. To me they are superficial and not medically necessary if there are no other indications that one is needed.

I have a good friend who had every type of prenatal testing done in the book, and it all came back fine. Guess what? She had a Down’s baby with a severe heart defect. Even modern medicine isn’t perfect.

- Robin on

I’m an X-ray tech and they also thought those were fine during pregnancy up until the last 30 years or so, my mother had one with me because they thought she was having twins. I wouldn’t say ultrasounds are completely harmless, it’s still sound waves passing through your body and the fetus, so who knows.

- jessicad on

I’m with jessicad, Robin and Sandy… I’m not so certain ultrasounds are as benign as some people seem to think.

I’ve had several friends and family tell me that when they had their ultrasounds, the fetus started waving it’s arms and legs and moving out of the way of the ultrasound. After hearing that a few times I started to wonder if it was so harmless.

The medical industry makes a lot of money off of doing ultrasounds, but is it really necessary to get them at every doctors visit? Lots of people seem to have the idea that they are part of necessary medicine these days, and get 8 or more per pregnancy.

It seems pretty invasive to me, especially the ones where they focus on the nuchal fold at the back of the neck where the spinal cord is, and also when they determine the sex of the baby. I think people should question this more instead of assuming it’s a given and blindly trusting.

- Anonymous on

That is one ugly mumu maternity top she is wearing.

- Holly on

I also think its funny, celebs who had suuuper strict diets and smoke. I dont know if Selma smokes or not, but Jennifer Aniston, who has gotten a lot of attention for her body (which looks fantastic!) has said she just doesnt eat sh*t, and yet, she smokes. I always found that really ironic.

- Halley on

I love her maternity style. Every picture I’ve seen of her while pregnant has been ADORABLE! However, I am so sick of celebrities hoity toity attitudes about food. And other moms-to-be can use midwifes too AND have ultrasounds. Maybe her quotes were taken out of context though, so I’ll try not to hold it against her :)

- Betty Finn on

Robin, Just curious, did your friend even have an amnio or cvs? Those are supposed to be 99% accurate.

- Anonymous on

Women forgoing ultrasounds during pregnancy is dangerous. Ultrasounds diagnose many disease undetectable by amnios and other fluid sampling techniques. These include congenital diaphragmatic hernias which a baby requires immediate medical attention at birth(that a midwife canNOT provide), gastroschisis, omphalocele, CCAMs, tracheo-espohageal fistulas, etc. that only an ultrasound can diagnose in utero.

Now on the flipside, no one needs 8 or more ultrasounds or a 3D ultrasound during pregnancy unless there is a problem already diagnosed. 2-3 ultrasounds are needed at most and severely impact the newborn’s chances of survival, particularly in women in the “older” age group of their child baring years.

- lb on

I would think having no ultrasounds could be dangerous. I had placenta previa with mine, and if they didn’t catch it with ultrasounds, i could have bled out in labor. How does a midwife find out things like that? Feel around in the uterus?

- TR on

To answer the question posed, no she did not have Amnio or CVS, as she was in her late 20′s and wasn’t considered high risk, especially since every other test came back fine. Her little boy is doing okay and is an absolute gem…he signs better than some deaf kids I know!

My nephew has a congenital bone malformation (facial) that multiple ultrasounds did not detect.

I think as a society we are looking to “label” our kids with diseases and special needs earlier and earlier. There is a fine line between wanting to know and over-diagnosis. The pervasiveness of helicopter parents has just made this problem worse.

- Robin on

She never said she was ever vegan. Maybe those foods don’t feel good for her. Maybe she is doing homebirth and hasn’t felt the need to get an ultrasound ordered. How the heck do you know if ultrasounds are so safe? And who said Selma still smokes? Get a life and congratulate a pregnant woman for doing things her way which she obviously feels is best. There are many educated people who feel ultrasounds may be harmful to fetus. They are such a recent thing. Doctors do one every visit when pregnant sometimes and that is a lot! Midwives can also tell when there is a breech baby or other problems. They have been birthing babies for centuries. it isn’t voodoo guys. everyone relies so heavily on the doctor and all their interventions. Relax!

- mitzi on

I knew someone would misread what I said. I NEVER said she still smokes. I said she did in the past. I merely stated I find it funny when celebs don’t eat x, won’t get an x-ray, won’t drink, etc, but smoke. I don’t care…I just find it humorous. To reiterate what I said earlier, I think she is absolutely adorable!

- woo2 on

she is a liar and a bitch. i waited on her in birmingham, michigan a few years ago and she ate a sandwhich (gluten). and was horribly rude to me when i recognized her. she is a rude bitchy person and i hope she has terrible morning sickness everyday.

- Anonymous on

I can’t imagine not having ultrasounds. I have 4 kids and each came with multiple ultrasounds. With my 4th child, during a routine ultrasound they saw his head was larger than normal…they suspected he had water on the brain. MANY ultasounds later he was borna nd within an hour of birth had an ultrasound on his brain….Everything was ok, but imagine if it wasn’t…Ultrasounds can help prepare people for circumstances that are coming their way.

- krewcat on

I’m often at the hospital with my child, who has a heart problem, and I have seen many children with congenital heart defects. Some of them need an open heart surgery or at least intensive care right after the are born, otherwise they won’t survive. And only some biggest hospitals perform this kind of surgeries. Transport is also a big risk for these kids. Ultrasound is the only way to find out about the most serious defects before the birth and prepare for them. Therefore a woman can pick the best hospital to give birth in, where the baby gets all the help it needs right after the birth. Not getting an ultrasound is very risky in my opinion. I think the consequences can be much more serious than the possible dangers of an ultrasound.

- Marg on

Krewcat, Your story sounds scary… I can’t imagine how much stress that must have caused!

A friend of mine also had “abnormal” ultrasounds and was told her baby had a potential head deformity. She was even advised of her option to terminate. She went through with the pregnancy, but worried the entire time. She had a scheduled c-section due to potential complications, but thankfully at the end her child was totally okay.

To be honest, when I hear stories like my friends and yours it makes me wary of ultrasounds. I realize they can find some rare problems that need surgical care, but by and large, I think they can be overly invasive and often cause needless concern.

- fuzibuni on

First of all, ultrasounds are not the end all, be all! Most direct entry midwives do not use them and many, many, many certified nursing midwives don’t use them. And yes, I’m speaking from experience because I’ve studied midwifery. I think they are wonderful if you desire to have one but she is not doing any harm to herself or her baby by not having one!

RY, yes, here in the US midwives are considered alternative. Most women choose to deliver with an OB/GYN instead. It’s a shame, really, because midwives are such a great option and so many people don’t even know they exist!

- Tee on

Anonymous, bitter much? I am not saying you are wrong, but it could also be that she had a bad day and just wanted to be left alone, after all, anyone can have a bad day wether it is due to PMS, stress, bad news, so I never judge a person who is rude on one occation (I too have worked in the service industry), I can say they were rude, but I will not judge their whole character based on it. In fact, I usually try to be nice to cashiers, waitresses, janitors, parking attendants, bus drivers, etc, but if you had served me a couple of weeks ago when I was on my 16th hour of delay ridden travelling after having slept way to little for 5 nights in a row, I would probably have come off as rude to you to. I was at least decidedly curt (adding my pleases and thank yous out of habit rather than as a courtesy) and I couldn’t get myselft to smile as I was just to exhausted. Hopefully the waitress that served me could se that I didn’t mean anything personal but was just stressed and exhausted.

Also, the fact that she had gluten “a few years ago” does not mean she isn’t gluten free today, if you had met me “a few years ago”, I would have gladly indulged in an ice cream every now and then, nowadays I stay away from milk products since they effect my health adversely. A colleague of mine was just diagnosed with celiac disease at 40, but if you had met him “a few years ago” he would happily have eaten any sandwich you had put in front of him.

People change, peoples habits changes, things that made perfect sense when you were in college will make no sense at all when you start a family, things that made perfect sense when you had a baby may make you wonder what on earth you were thinking of when the same child is a teenager. My father used to be quite the party goer when he was in college, when I was a kid he liked his night cap, a couple of years ago he would gladly have a glass of wine with dinner, today he doesn’t drink at all. Does saying that he doesn’t drink make him a liar since he used to drink quite a lot in college?

Anyways, I wish her a happy and healthy pregnancy, she really has that pregnancy glow going.

- MiB on

all I hear is “I don’t eat meat, soy, dairy, gluten, fat, sugar, artifical ingredients at all. I don’t believe in medicine, ultrasounds, names, nudism, and communism” its like… wtf is she even saying. She sounds like an idiot.

- kat on

Everyone eats sugar. Your body can’t exist without it..Theres sugar in fruit but, it is better than table sugar which she probably avoids. I really wonder how truthfully celebrities are about their diets. Everything they say becomes an advertisement and, I wouldn’t be shocked if sometimes they fib because they’re getting a kickback from some company. That could just be the conspiracy theorist in me tho ;)

- Indira on

y’all care WAY too much about this woman, and what she is doing.
WHO CARES?!?

- currie on

I can’t believe the offenses taken, even someone calling her “hoity toity,” for not eating gluten or dairy. A couple of years ago, I also was eating bread, and her dietary changes, much like mine could be new within the last year. There is a whole world of other healthy grains one can eat, and as yummy as cheese is, the protein IS inflammatory to some people, like the protein in wheat can be inflammatory. We don’t know what other health conditions she has and that usually is why people give up gluten. Trust me, I know, I WISH I could eat whole wheat products. It would make eating at restaurants and friends’ houses and grocery shopping ALOT easier and cheaper. I am irritated by those who really seem to think it’s a Hollywood thing or just to be a fussy eater thing. it’s simple just NOT a matter of “anything in moderation” for alot of people.Extra joint pain and swelling, debilitating migraines with nausea, and chronic diarrhea seem a pretty good reason for one to avoid gluten and dairy. There are reasons people make what may be an unusual dietary choice.

- zappo on

Thank you zappo, you said it all! I’m a completely different person without gluten and I feel so much better, it’s a pain trying to eat out or eat with friends but it’s totally worth it.

- jessicad on

Well I gave up gluten and sugar years ago, makes a WORLD of diiference. Good for her!

- Tara on

This is not Selma Blairs first child. When Selma was a teenager in 1988 she got pregnant and had a child in Suffern New York that she gave up for adoption. That child was a baby girl. That childs adoptive name is Chaya Zamler. The baby was named baby girl Bietner at birth. Which is Selma’s maiden name.

- Fact Checker on

anonymous, maybe she was rude to you because you are a vile person. People change eating habits as well. and to fact checker… You are maybe a little crazy. Why would you even have that kind of information? Delusional ? I think so.

- mitzi on

Fact Checker, your accusations are ludicrous! Ha. Almost makes me laugh but then actually makes me feel sorry for you and how crazy and delusional you must be to write such blatant lies about Selma Blair. And why would you?

For everyone else: I love that she’s gluten free sugar free and dairy free. I love that she’s doing a home birth and using a midwife. I love that she cares about this baby so much that she doesn’t fill her body with toxic waste or expose it to ultrasounds and other equipment that hasn’t be around long enough to really know if it causes harm to the fetus or not. Women have been giving birth naturally for centuries and actually I find the hospital business of birthing babies disgusting. It is a business and it is run like a business. I think Selma Blair sets a great example. For one thing she’s got the best pregnancy fashion sense that Hollywood has ever seen AND she’s not afraid to answer honestly about her diet and how she chooses to take care of this baby. She’s not preachy what-so-ever. Just honest. I wish I could wait on her and give her a sandwich! I think she’s a very good little actress too. Maybe she just wanted to eat her sandwich in peace without being gawked at?
