I would also like to say that my 6 yr old LOVES African hair. She thinks they are beautiful. She wants that hairstyle. Unfortunately she has white hair and it’s as thin as hair can be. I have a friend who adopted two African American children and has a book on African hair and will loan it to us. Hopefully I will learn to corn roll and braid so my little will have the style she craves. For now we wet her hair and braid it so in the morn it’s all kinky.

@Mary I wonder do we know the difference at that age. = ) I remember when I was 7, my childhood best friend (still best friends) was/is white and I had put all this grease in her hair and was getting ready to use a pressing/hot comb on it, until my mom walked in. LOL

I love these! My daughter has tight ringlet curls that go half way down her back. Yes, they are hard to mantain and untangle but both my daughter and I love her hair. It shocks me when family and strangers at the street, say its time for a hair cut. I don’t care if these shirt is aimed for ethnic hair, I’m totally getting one!

My first girlfriend was bi-racial, she would spend HOURS straightening her hair or she would braid it, but it looked best when she left it alone and let it do it’s own thing!

@Emily – My best friends growing up were auburn-headed twins, so every single doll of mine had red hair, and when I was old enough, I dyed it auburn and it has been so ever since! Your kids are lucky!

Emily- People make rude remarks about their hair? I think red hair is absolutely beautiful and I have never heard anything bad said about it. I would be horrified if anyone made any negative comment about my hair, or my (future) children’s hair, no matter what it looked like.

I believe she does uderstand. We have a wii game called Disney princess and you can make your own princess. She always makes hers the African American princess, “because she is so beautiful”. If she sees an African American little girl with beads or rolls she will go up, with my permission of course and tell her that she loves her hair or tell her. On amazon I had found some nice story books on African princess geared to young kids which she loves to read. We have always said that she is an old sole. I always tell my children that we are all a shade of brown but some of us are light and some are dark.

@ Sidjazz , i am not sure what you meant by your comment, but this is in fact about ethnic hair. The ” i love my hair” skit was written for sesame street by a writer/man who had just adopted a 5 year old girl from Ethiopia. He said he had no idea what an issue ” hair” would become and wrote this skit for his daughter in appreciation of her beautiful, unique hair.

Awwww Mary seems like you have a very beautiful and positive spirited daughter. I absolutely love positive people “especially kids”. You never know what someone is going through or if they lack confidence in the beauty of their hair etc…. but to hear a complaint may just brighten up someone’s day!! Great Job!!!

@Indira, I know exactly who the shirt is geared towards, people like me and my daughters. However our hair is not “ethnic” neither are we. We are people, just like white people are. Our hair and complexion are different but no two people are alike, even those from the same race.

@Nan, what I mean’t by my comment is exactly how it sounds and I know the story behind the shirts…trust me, all black women do:) We need to stop placing labels on things we deem “different”. We do such a poor job at it. My hair might be different from yours in appearance, yes its unique in its own way, but its still just hair, not ethnic hair.

I’m not sure if you are from the US but, assuming that you are– minority people are indeed ethnic, as they fall into subgroups outside the dominant population. Thats the definition of ethnic.

None of the definitions of ethnic take away being human. If you acknowledge these differences why not have a word to describe them? There’s nothing wrong with a label and as someone of African/Middle-eastern descent, I personally do not think the term ethnic has a negative connotation. Would you prefer the term “different hair”?

On the subject of hair, it makes my life a lot easier going to sephora–I go straight to the ethnic hair care aisle!

Erika it’s interesting that you say you’ve never heard anything bad said about red hair. i have always thought this is a cultural thing. the country i grew up in there were never any bad remarks made about kids with red hair (the opposite in fact) but now i live in britain and there are a lot of ginger jokes and a lot of people are made fun of because they have ginger hair. it is sad because red hair is really no different to any other kind. sadly it is not uncommon at all for kids to be bullied for being ginger….

@Indira…LOL, no I’m not from the USA (yes, I’m going the happy dance I like to think that I live in a much more tolerable country. I hate having labels placed on me and I think we can do without many of them. In my world I’m not a part of a subgroup, I’m just a part of the general population. I see nothing wrong with being African/Middle Eastern etc. I’m very proud of my race, my African heritage as well as my European heritage, however I have a problem with the word “ethnic” as you can see I do get where you’re coming from though and I’ll respectfully agree to disagee with you. I’m just being the change that I want to see in this world and I’ll continue with this quest, one individual at a time.

I’m aware of what the dictionary definition of ethnic means but I’m also aware of how we tend to use it in society. This is exactly why people have issues with the term ethnic. It defines everyone else based on the “normal” i.e. white population. It’s problematic and not okay with a lot of people.
