Nicole Kidman ‘Desperately’ Wanted Another Child

There are some things that come easily for Nicole Kidman – for instance her ability to tap into a character when the cameras are rolling. But when it comes to motherhood, the Oscar winner — and current best actress nominee — says there is something she has always struggled with.

The mother of four, who just welcomed baby Faith Margaret on Dec. 28 via a gestational carrier, says she has “had a roller coaster ride with fertility.”

“Anyone that’s been in the place of wanting another child or wanting a child knows the disappointment, the pain and the loss that you go through trying and struggling with fertility,” the Rabbit Hole actress, 43, tells Australia’s 60 Minutes in an interview that aired Sunday night.

“Fertility is such a big thing, and it’s not something I’ve ever run away from talking about.”

It’s a struggle that dates back to her marriage with Tom Cruise — whom she divorced in 2001 after adopting kids Isabella, 18, and Connor, 16. In 2007, the actress revealed she had a miscarriage before they split.

After giving birth to daughter Sunday Rose, now 2½, her first child with husband Keith Urban, Kidman says the couple used a gestational carrier because of her fertility struggles.

“The love I felt … she was the most wonderful woman to do this for us. We were in a place of desperately wanting another child,” she says. “This opportunity arose for us, and I couldn’t get pregnant. We wanted another baby. (crying) I get emotional talking about it because I’m so grateful to her.”

Now as the family settles down in their homes in Nashville and Los Angeles, Kidman says she enjoys time with all of her kids equally.

“Children are children — you’ll die for your children,” she says. “And when you feel that as a parent — that’s the unconditional love.”

I saw the interview; it was very sweet and Nic was very open :) She showed a photo of Sunday and Faith napping together, and said Faith is getting red hair :)

I feel your pain, Nicole. I never had fertility problems. It was carrying the pregnancy to term that was my problem. I had 4 stillbirths because I was so desperate to have another child. My first pregnancy was full of problems but luckily we ended up with a wonderful little baby boy born 6 weeks prematurely. He is now 20 years old and the light of my life. However, I still mourn the loss of our other 4 children. My husband and I didn’t have the money to hire a surrogate so we simply gave up. It was the saddest day of my life when I realized that I would never have another child.

I feel like crying for her. She deserved to have another child and my heart breaks for her. I’m so happy that she could use the surrogate! What a wonderful blessing! I’m so happy for her!

I think Ms. Kidman is one of the sweetest people, from what I’ve read about her and seeing different interviews.

My husband and I have been in the process of growing our family since late 2005. We tried adoption and 9 months into it (when the girls were born) the mom changed her mind, 3 months later my husband’s mom passed away and we decided to see an RE. We got pregnant a short time later only to lose our son to PA.

With my husband doing his medical training and everything we are unable to do anything more at this point. They’ve shortened my husband’s hours and yanked my health insurance at his place of work.

One day we will have another :)

"We weren't trying to have kids. We left it up to fate. I knew there was a possibility, but I was really excited. Even if you are trying, just to see a positive result is shocking!"
