Melissa Rycroft Strickland is a mom! She and her husband, insurance agent Tye Strickland, welcomed a daughter on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 16, her rep confirms to PEOPLE.

Ava Grace Strickland,ย born in Dallas and weighing 6 lbs., 13 oz., is the first child for the pair, who wed in December 2009 in Mexico. Mother and child are resting comfortably.

“Our lives have changed so much in the last two years and today we’ve been blessed with the best change ever, our beautiful baby girl,” Rycroft, 27, tells PEOPLE.

Earlier this year, Rycroft — who was famously dumped by Jason Mesnick after becoming engaged on The Bachelor — said the turn of events had been an enormous blessing in her life.

“Everything is wonderful and life is exactly as it should be,” she said.

Congratulations Melissa & Tye!
I couldn’t wait to hear the baby name she picked out and turns out to be the same as my oldest daughter! Common name, but sooo beautiful.

cali girl on

Beautiful, trendy name! Love it

Hi on

Really? Ava Grace? That has to be one of the most boring names ever. I’m not saying that I want another Moxie Crimefighter or anything, but why not something different like Delaney or Lydia or Brette?

kaitlyn on

Ava Grace was what I wanted to name my daughter ever since I was 15! Very pretty, but a little too common for me now!

klutzy_girl on

Congratulations to them! I love the names Ava and Grace.

Although Grace is starting to get overused and I’m starting to get tired of it, which is bad, since it’s on my favorite names list!

A. on

I had a feeling something was going on because she didn’t have any Tweets today, when she had been Tweeting a lot! Lol Congrats to them, I can’t wait to see pictures! I bet she’s gorgeous with those genes!

Natalie on

congrats, that is my oldest daughters name, so classic!! Its better to have a name overused and classic rather than a name that the child will get made fun of and not taken serious as they get older.

Leonora on

Very pretty, classic name…but how many kids in Hollywood are named Ava Grace now? Four? Five? Six? (And that’s not counting how many non-celebs I know!)

Tess on

Beautiful name. I still don’t think she’s a celeb, though.

Anne on

beautiful name, can’t wait to see their little princess.

Lisa on

Ava Grace is a beautiful name! Thank god for a trendy name. I don’t know how people make up names nowadays.

Harlow on

It is a pretty name but very common, I know 2 other Ava Graces.

Romy on

nice and normal, but too common for my taste. I also don’t care for Brette or Delaney though!

Gaia and Laban's mom on

There are two avas in my daughterd playgroup, one eva and one grace! Its very popular right now.

shirabee on

i think that is a very beautiful name. i don’t know, something about them just made me think that they would go the ‘classic’ route! anyways i love it! congrats to this beautiful family

Brooklyn on

Aw, congratulations to Melissa & Tye! I like the name. It’s simple but sweet!

JM on

eurgh really don’t like the name at all, so boring.
but hey, not my kid.
congrats to them, i wish them health and happiness.

Taylor on

Aww I love the name Ava Grace! It sounds so elegant. I can’t wait to see pictures of her ! ๐Ÿ™‚

Nicole on

I don’t care if a name is considered ‘overused’ or ‘too common’. If you like the name, go with it. I love the name they chose. Beautiful name for a beautiful baby girl. Congrats!

Sus on

Love the name! Classicly beautiful like Mommy Melissa! ๐Ÿ™‚

Amy on

I love the name Ava !! It is just oh so popular or I would use it in a nanosecond. It’s a beautiful, classic, timeless choice. It just seems boring now because it’s everywhere!

Emmy on

Beautiful name, love it!

Lacey on

Hi-I said the same thing when I read the name. It’s boring, predictable and there’s hundreds of “Ava Grace”‘s. It’s like having “Ann” or “Marie” for a middle name.

mypiecesandbits on

While I think the name Ava is beautiful it is way too overused. How many baby Ava’s are there in Hollywood now? Its beginning to seem like a “cop out” name, can’t think of anything else…lets just go with Ava! Same with using Grace as a middle name.

Lyla on

Classic name. They are each beautiful on their own but I do agree that when combined they come together in a really boring way that feels overdone.

It’s just kind of…flat. meh.

I’m sure she’s gorgeous!

Crystal on

Ava Grace is super overused right now! I love the name but I have heard so many Ava Grace’s it’s kind of annoying. NOT at all trying to take away from this wonderful announcement of the fact that Melissa and Tye have been blessed with this beautiful baby girl! CONGRATULATIONS!

Tee on

I love, love, love the name that they picked out for their daughter! Ava Grace is classic and beautiful!

B.R on

I am just glad that both mom and baby are going well and that everyone is healthy. As for the name I like it, yes it common but who cares, it is still beautiful and it will look good on a resume or a job application, unlike some of the names we have been hearing lately. A friend of mine had a baby girl yesterday as well and they choose Ivy Rose, their older daughters are Emma Grace, Ava Grace, so I love the name that Melissa has pick cause I am already in love with a little 2 year old with the same name.

CelebBabyLover on

Lenora- There DO seem to be a lot of Ava Grace’s in Hollywood! And that’s not even counting all the celeb baby Ava’s that DON’T have Grace as a middle name! Two I can think of are Jason Priestly’s Ava (whose middle name is Veronica), and Reese Witherspoon’s Ava (whose middle name is Elizabeth).

Anyway, some of these comments make me chuckle. Celebs really can’t win. They give their child a unique name and people criticize them….and they give their child a common name and people criticize them!

Congrats to Melissa and Ty (and by the way, when did she start using Ty’s last name? This is the first time I’ve heard of her referred to as Melissa Rycroft Strickland)!

stacey on

Congratulations to Melissa and Tye- Can’t believe the negativity of THEIR name choice for THEIR baby and the comments of what THEY should have named THEIR baby. Ava Grace is a perfectly, normal, pretty name.

Lady on

I still love the name & use to want to name my daughter that too…but it really is a bit too common for me now. I hope she got his dimples because there killer, congrats to the new family!

Lilianne on

@Hi…it’s funny that you mention the name Delaney. I have a daughter with that name. Lol. She is almost 17 and it is still fairly uncommon although there are more girls with that name now than there were when she was born. I still like that name Ava though. It is pretty, feminine and classic. ๐Ÿ™‚

sara on

I have to agree with the others…Ava Grace is boring and way overused.

Lorelei on

Congratulations to Melissa and Tye on their daughter. Boy, am I glad I’m not a celebrity to have everyone judge the names we gave our children. Ava Grace is a beautiful and classic name!

Victoria on

Shh. My daughter is named Delaney and I’m okay if it stays “unpopular”, lol

Stella Bella on

Yeah, Ava Grace is kind of stale at this point, at least for me. Very popular. Sort of like naming your kid Jennifer Marie in ’82.

NM on

FINALLY-A normal name for once!

elle on

Thank you both for choosing a popular name, instead of something annoying like “pineapple” or “cashew”.

Kellie on

Maybe they LOVED the Ava Grace? I don’t think it’s a cop out…it’s just a VERY pretty and popular name currently. Also some parents don’t care if the name is boring to some and is not unique enough, it’s their preference. The fact is most likely somewhere in the world someone has your name.

tink1217 on

its a pretty name, but so overused…especially in Hollywood. Congrats!

Jodi on

I do not understand why people say their child is beautiful in an annocument. Remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder and not all babies are cute, sorry it is the truth.

Ashley on

Yes, very over-used. Ava is pretty, but don’t really care for the whole name. Just my opinion.

Sara-Jayne on

Well, I think it’s a beautiful name. Probably because I named my daughter Aeva-Grace. Congrats to them!

Rose on

@mypiecesandbits: It’s kind of ridiculous to assume that people would name their kid Ava because they can’t think of anything else. My two all-time favorite girls and two favorite boys names are ridiculously over-used and I have tried and tried to talk myself out of those names because they’re so popular. But I don’t like any other names as much as those two – and I’m not going to name my child something I don’t love just because a lot of other people like the name as well. You have to say your kids name about 200 times a day, it should be something you love.

shalay on

“I do not understand why people say their child is beautiful in an annocument. Remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder and not all babies are cute, sorry it is the truth.”

And in THEIR opinion, their baby is beautiful. It’s their birth announcement, they should be able to state how they feel.

I love the name Ava Grace, but I have to admit, I was slightly disappointed when I read her name due to the popularity of it. Still a beautiful name though! And I LOLed at Stella Bella’s comment! I’m a child of the 80s (middle name Marie) and I probably knew 10 different Jennifers! Same with Ashleys, Brittanys, and Nicoles.

CelebBabyLover on

shalay- Exactly! And come on, do we REALLY expect them to say, “our baby sure isn’t beautiful”? All parents think their babies are beautiful and tend to like to say so. ๐Ÿ™‚

Emily on

Hmmm I don’t like how common Ava is becoming, It’s been my favourite girl’s name for about a year now but then awhile ago I was thinking it was too common so I tried to come up with another girl’s name I like but I’m still coming back to Ava. At the moment I plan on calling my daughter Ava Charlotte and son Jackson Berkeley. ……Anyway congrats to them both! x

S. on

Love the name! My youngest is named Ava Grace! Congrats to them both!

Aly on

Congrats Melissa and Tye! I saw you on ‘The Talk’ and you looked so beautiful! Beautiful name and I bet baby Ava will look just like you!!<3

Sam & Freya's mum on

Pretty name but so trendy and overused IMO. Congrats nevertheless!

kari on

My daughters name too! ๐Ÿ™‚

Rea on

How can all you ladies say something mean about the name and then turn around and say congrats. Two faced. Its a baby. Who cares what the name is?! You know how many John Smiths there are?! So there is one more Ava Grace and she gets to have one awesome mother and father. Congrats to them and more power to them for putting up with all the two faced people in this world…!

dsfg on

” . . . but why not something different like Delaney or Lydia or Brette?”

Because they probably don’t like those names.

She has had her fifteen minutes of fame who really cares about what she does anymore….

Megan on

SOOOOOO happy for them! My daughter’s name is Ava and it is a BEAUTIFUL name even if it is common. You pick a name because you love it not because America approves of it. Leave her alone. She has a beautiful family now and is moving on with her life. I love her! Delaney is not a first name it is a last name and mine to boot. I HATE when people use it as a first name. AVA is a perfect name!

stephanie on

luv it!!!! that is such a cute name.. i am very happy for her

RM on

SERIOUSLY!!!! People think they should make it their business to determine whether a newborn’s name is appropriate. And,it doesn’t matter if the mom was somewhat of a celebrity or not you still DO NOT have that right. For those of you who have children, take a step back and put yourself in their shoes. How would you have liked it if perfect strangers were heard standing outside the nursery window making snarky remarks about your child’s name?? Get over it. I’m fairly certain they could care less if you like the name or not. Congrats to the parents on the birth a gorgeous baby girl. And, for what’s it’s worth, it is a beautiful name that any little girl can grow into and be proud of.
