Christina Applegate: Sadie ‘Has Healed Me’

Holding newborn daughter Sadie Grace in the hospital on Jan. 27, Christina Applegate was overwhelmed by her feelings of acceptance and love.

“I felt my heart literally open up for the first time and like wrap itself around her. It was profound,” Applegate, 39, tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “And I’m more in love with her every minute of the day.”

Back home in the L.A. house she shares with musician fiancé Martyn LeNoble, 41, Applegate has been relishing motherhood. “I want to be the ultimate burper and diaper-changer, I want to be the ultimate at all of it,” she says.

“Sometimes I stand there going, ‘I’m not doing any of this right!’ And then I get this big man belch out of her and I go, ‘Ah, we accomplished this together.’”

It’s those little moments that now mean the most to Applegate, who opted for a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008.

“I’ve had to talk about that word [cancer] more than I’ve ever had to talk about a word in my life,” she says. “After a while you’re like, ‘There’s got to be something else to me.’”

Daughter Sadie has now given Applegate a new word to focus on: Mom.

“Yeah, now I’m Mom. She’s healed me in so many ways,” says the actress. “She’s just made my life so much better. She’s opened my whole soul.”

For more of Applegate’s exclusive interview, including photos of the family, pick up this week’s PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.

Yeah that baby is all dad! I feel bad for him that they didnt put him on the cover with his family. Is Martyn a natural blonde? The baby looks very dark haired and I am pretty sure Christina is a natural born blonde. I know hair color can change tho..

- Mina on

I have never met Christina and I can’t imagine that I ever will but I am overwhelmingly happy for her. Congratulations on baby Sadie and your renewed sense of self.

I’m so happy for Christina!! I dont know the odds of pregnancy after cancer so I was super epic happy to hear of her pregnancy last year!! She gives hope to so many women & I love the baby’s name.

I just have to ask, is Sadie pronounce “Say-dee” or “shah-de”. I’ve seen the same spelling but 2 different pronounciations. Either is cute to me! Thanks in advance!

- Minami86 on

Usually it’s pronounced Say-dee. I’ve never heard it pronounced any other way. Sade is usually pronounced Sha-day. I guess that’s the other pronunciation you were talking about?

- Terri on

Minami86, I say “say-dee”. I’ve heard the “shah-de” pronunciation for the spelling Sade, if that helps!
Oh-so-adorable baby! Thanks to Christina for the wonderful interview!

Adorable baby. There truly is nothing as beautiful as the love for your child and becoming a mom for the first time is the best thing that happened to me. I was only 22 and words cant even describe the feelings.

- Harlow on

Sadie is adorable! And I’m very happy for her!

Thanks Terri & Sandrah!! =)

She is right there is nothing heals old scars like becoming a mom. My son broke my heart and made it whole and bigger all at the same time. I don’t know where I would be without him. With everything she has been through the hard decisions she has had to make, to have this amazing blessing happen to her, makes me smile. It’s as if with all the things that are going wrong in the world, this is something that feel really right. She will be a beautiful and amazing mother and I am looking forward to see the love between her and her little girl grow. Wishing both parents and the baby all the best things the world has to offer

- B.R on

Aww she is gorgeous and her name suite her perfectly!

What a cutie! I can’t wait to get my copy of this issue in the mail! :)

Christina has a lot on her plate. There is the possibility of a cancer recurrence. She has to face a hysterectomy at a young age because of the BRCA mutation and she has to worry if her baby daughter has this horrible mutation.

- Patty on

Amazing what wonders we bring to life and thank you
