Why Kate Hudson Kept Her Pregnancy a Secret from Friends

Jacques Brinon/AP

If Kate Hudson ever makes pregnancy look like no big deal, well, she’s just acting.

The actress, 31, who’s expecting a baby with rocker boyfriend Matthew Bellamy, says she’s settling into her role as a mom-to-be — and that means enduring morning sickness.

“I’m pregnant, and I’m really sick,” she tells The Times, with a laugh. “But I couldn’t say that because you really want to keep it as quiet as you can for the first trimester.”

Hudson, who has a son, Ryder, 7, with ex-husband Chris Robinson, says she originally tried to keep her baby bump a secret — even from her closest pals.

“My friends all thought I was depressed because I wouldn’t leave the house,” she says. “But I didn’t want anyone to know for a long time. I was just hoping that all of a sudden, I could show up somewhere with a big belly.”

She adds: “But, of course, you’re somewhere in L.A., and somebody says something, and it ends up somewhere.”

And as she awaits the due date of her baby this summer, there’s only one problem.

“I babble a lot,” she says, citing “pregnancy brain.” “I forget words, and how to put sentences together. I just give up.”

Well, that’s understandable. Plus, there’s that worry of miscarriage in the first trimester. I’m glad everything’s going well, even though she still has morning sickness!

Pregnancy brain does not sound fun at all.

pregnancy/mommy brain is the worst!!! I feel for her!! Also..keeping it secret for the first trimester is what I would do..and did. It’s nice to have that secret between just you and your partner for awhile…plus chances of miscarriage, etc…nothing wrong with that!

i’m going to be annoyed if there is a kate hudson post on here every day. she gets on my nerves. she’s flaky and only famous because of her mother, who is equally flaky and horrible at acting.

hayley w Congratulations wishing you a healthy and happy pregnancy and deliver.

As for Kate I think it’s what every women should do, it just better that way. Less to explain if things go wrong. She always looked like a great mom to her son and I am sure she will be amazing with this baby too. I wish her all the best and hopefully the morning sickness stops soon.

I’m so over Kate Hudson…I swear every time you open up a magazine she’s hooking up with another new guy, we’ll see if this guy lasts.

I seriously agree with anon.

I love Kate Hudson in Almost Famous-but she hasn’t been in anything since that really matches her potential since then. And-I do hope it’s a girl + the baby is happy/healthy. However-the reality of the situation is this was an “unplanned/opps” pregnancy + they are dealing with it despite not being that serious/together that long.

I think you can make things work regardless how long you have been together, but considered her dating history-she doesn’t seem to be much for commitment…I don’t see the likelihood of it lasting for 30 years+ (getting married…etc).

If something goes wrong in their relationship, it better not mess up the band Matt’s in. I love MUSE and im happy for Kate, Matt and their soon to be baby, but im scared for the sake of MUSE.
