Please tell me that people really don’t ‘freak’ over a ‘baby name thief’. Really? There is nothing else in the world to worry about than *gasp* someone naming their child a name you liked? The lady in the article stated it was a name she picked out years ago…I presume before she was/is married so does this mean the husband/father of her child doesn’t get a say in the child’s name? I’m sure that will go over well

My mother liked the name Richard for a boy and had I been a boy that would have been my name, she mentioned it to my aunt who loved the name so that’s what she named her son who was born about a year after I was born. 3 yrs later when my brother came along she just picked out a different name all together, there is no animosity between my aunt and my mother and there never should be.

I named my son after my grandfather, I have a cousin my age who is named after my grandfather as well and his wife got upset when I named my son what I did but I along with my cousin informed her that they can name their son after my grandfather as well….when they finally decide to have children.

Again there is so much more in the world to worry about, like wars, natural disasters, the economy, and TSA agents that we don’t need to worry about the name someone chooses for their child.

i agree, nobody OWNS a name. it seems like treating a child like an accessory when people get possessive about the name they have chosen for their child. what will make your child special is who they are, not what you call them. surely if someone hears what you are going to name your child and then names their child that, that is the ultimate compliment for your child’s name :)

Ughh I hate when people complain about ‘stealing’ a name. It’s not copyrighted. It’s also not like buying a pair of shoes that are the same, every child is unique, despite their name. I liked meeting other people with my name as I don’t know many people that have it and I think it’s cool to meet other Erikas. Personally, I wouldn’t choose a name based on it’s uniqueness but based on how I like it. If the name has meaning to the parents, and they and the child love it, that’s all that matters!
The sad thing is, I know people who have often broken off friendships because of this- and the name was Jacob! The most popular boys name in the US. Not that there is anything wrong with naming a boy Jacob, but both parents-to-be had to realize that there would be other Jacobs out there!

I wrote a few children’s books… not on purpose.
