Melissa Etheridge: Kids ‘Were Calm’ About My Cancer Diagnosis

Paul Morigi/FilmMagic

When Melissa Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, she didn’t hide anything from her kids.

“They were 6 and 8 at the time,” she recalls. “Tammy and I said that my tumor was like a lump with a cold in it, that the cold had spread to my body, and that we needed to take it out, and take some medicine.”

Explaining her disease in terms Bailey Jean and Beckett (now 13 and 11) understood made things easier, she says. “I didn’t say anything frightening, like ‘I might die!’ ” she shares. “But I wanted to let them know the seriousness of it, too. They were calm about it.”

Naomi Watts: Sasha and Kai Think I Work In a Trailer

INF

As a working mother whose job is to play make-believe, Naomi Watts says her two boys with fiancé Liev SchreiberAlexander ‘Sasha’ Pete and Samuel Kai — have interesting ideas when it comes to what their parents do for a living.

“They think our work is in a trailer,” Watts, 42, told PEOPLE at the press conference for her latest film, Fair Game, on Saturday in New York. “They don’t really understand it yet.”

Sons Sasha, 3, and Kai, 21 months, do have an inkling that Watts and Schreiber live more than ordinary lives, however.

“There’s been times where they see a photo or a flash of us on TV and they’ll go, ‘Oh, Mummy!’ Or ‘Daddy!’” she says. “But we try to explain that daddy or mummy has to go to work now and they’ll say, ‘I want to come.’”

Amy Brenneman’s Son Negotiates Dinner Table Terms

Courtesy Working Mother

Before Amy Brenneman signs on the dotted line, the actress ensures her children remain high on her list of priorities.

“With Private Practice, it’s part of my contract that my children have their own trailer so that they have someplace to come to,” the mom to Charlotte Tucker, 9½, and Bodhi Russell, 5, tells Working Mother.

“Charlotte is amazing on set. And the cranes fascinate Bodhi; he makes friends with all the grips.”

And according to Brenneman, 46, her son Bodhi seems to have inherited his mom’s stellar negotiating skills — especially at the dinner table.

Scott Kirkland/Globe

Rescue Me star Andrea Roth is “madly in love” with her family of three — and it shows!

The actress offers effusive praise of fiancé Todd Biermann in the October issue of Pregnancy, crediting his sunny outlook with lifting her mood during what was a difficult pregnancy — including a bout with swine flu — with daughter Ava Reese, 5 months.

“One of the nicest moments came when we were in a pregnancy class together and our instructor was asking all the partners how things were going,” she recalls. “I remember so many of them saying how tough it was, and when it was Todd’s turn he said, ‘I don’t know why it’s so tough for everyone; We haven’t had any lows.’ It was so sweet.”
