Maggie Gyllenhaal and Emma Thompson Delight in Their Daughters

Courtesy Good Housekeeping

Nanny McPhee costars Maggie Gyllenhaal and Emma Thompson open up to Good Housekeeping in their August issue, revealing that both revel in spending girlie-girl time with their daughters.

Thompson routinely plays “hair salon” at home with daughter Gaia Romilly, 10,  while Gyllenhaal says that she and Ramona, 3½, enjoy weekly manicures “at the nail place on the corner,” she says.

“I didn’t do that kind of thing much with my mother; she didn’t wear makeup or high heels; she didn’t, you know, moisturize. My mother was interested in political things,” Gyllenhaal explains.

“The joy of femininity wasn’t something she stressed. But all those feminine things can be wonderful, and I have really enjoyed finding all that stuff on my own.”

Angelina Jolie: Shiloh’s Sense of Style ‘Fascinating’

Lester Cohen/WireImage

When it comes to Shiloh Jolie-Pitt‘s budding sense of style, no one could be prouder than mom Angelina Jolie.

“I think she is fascinating, the choices she is making,” the Salt actress, 35, tells Reuters.

“And I would never be the kind of parent to force somebody to be something they are not. I think that is just bad parenting.”

Often spotted out in boyish attire — including fedoras, vests and ties — the 4-year-old has sparked a controversial debate about her tomboy fashion.

However, Jolie insists people are missing the bigger picture.

“Children should be allowed to express themselves in whatever way they wish without anybody judging them because it is an important part of their growth,” she explains.

“Society always has something to learn when it comes to the way we judge each other, label each other. We have far to go.”
