The New Gloved Ones? Seinfeld Boys Dress like Baseball Stars ‘Every Single Day’

Most kids insist on picking out their own outfit to wear, and Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld’s sons Julian, 7, and Shepherd, 5, are no different.

However, their choice is a little less uniform than most.

“Our two sons wear full baseball uniforms to camp, to school, every single day,” Jessica told PEOPLE at the grand opening of the East Harlem Target store July 20.

“They even wear the batting gloves in the back pocket.”

Though many parents may gawk at the idea, Mets fans Jessica and Jerry, who are also parents to 9-year-old daughter Sascha, think it’s hilarious.

“They literally live as though they are in Major League Baseball,” says Jessica. “They truly channel the players that they love.”

While that’s not even close to the worst parenting decision one could make, I’m still a little surprised by it. I understand indulging a toddler in their “I wanna wear my Superman / ballerina / pjs every place” phase. However, 5 and 7 seems old enough to understand “we have different outfits for school, home, church, playtime, etc. and sometimes we have to leave toys + playclothes at home.” Plus, it seems like a distraction to have everyone else dressed appropriately for, say, school and you have two kids dressed in costumes.

I knew a 4 year old that would dress in full on costumes (Flash Gordon, Superman, the Huld, etc. Actual Halloween costumes) EVERY day. While it could be slightly distracting, in the end it wasn’t really hurting anyone so his parents and I decided that it wasn’t such a big deal.

I also have a cousin who is OBSESSED with baseball. He is really good at the game. Their lives revolve around baseball every summer. He went through a rather long phase when he was younger where he wouldn’t wear anything that didn’t have a number on it. (Not quite as bad as the full uniform, but close.) His punishment for anything was having to wear a ‘dress’ shirt, i.e. anything that was without a number.

They aren’t costumes, they are uniforms. It isn’t any more distracting for them to be wearing them than when we were in school and walking around with the football players and the baseball players and the basketball players and the cheerleaders and etc. all decked out for that afternoon’s game. And really, Megan, you are getting much too upset over these people that you will most likely never meet and their actions that affect you in NO way. Why do so many people think that how other people live their lives is their business and that it is vitally important that they change their minds??

I think this is hysterical. I had a neighbor once whose 8-year old daughter borrowed my daughter’s Snow White costume… then wore it to school every day for a week. So funny!!

I feel sorry for the people who think that society should dictate what is and isn’t okay to wear on our bodies. So what if the kid wears a baseball uniform to church. Is that somehow less pious and respectful? Stop pigeonholing kids into wearing what you think is appropriate. Now is the time to let them self-express. They’ll have 50 or more years of their life where someone else may be dictating what they can wear. Childhood is for fun!!

I think this is fantastic! Little girl in my sons class wears only princess costumes – full on tiaras and tulle every day – and it doesn’t even faze the kids. She will grow out of it and they will have years to laugh about it in the future. Good for them for not making a big deal out of it. Every little kid needs dreams and an imagination- why we try to stifle that so much as a society I will never understand.
