Gwyneth Paltrow’s Petting Zoo Party Preparations

Splash News Online

This May, Gwyneth Paltrow will be shaking things up in London — all at the request of her daughter Apple, who will be turning six this month.

“The kids’ birthday parties [in London] are usually some sort of grimy church hall kind of thing with a clown of questionable nature, little sandwiches and juice boxes and that’s it,” she revealed during a Thursday appearance on Late Show with David Letterman.

“So my fear is always I’m going to come in there like the Hollywood nightmare and overdo it, which I’m going to do, but that’s okay.”

With Apple having requested a petting zoo for her special day, the Iron Man 2 actress, 37, was under the impression that the celebration would be a small affair.

“I just thought we’d get a couple of bunnies and a cat,” she laughs. However, one e-mail from the petting zoo coordinator later and Paltrow’s vision quickly vanished.

“It’s crazy! It’s literally like one pony to ride — I don’t know where we’re riding this pony, by the way — one pony to pet, some goats, a bearded dragon, a tarantula, two manx rats and a descented skunk. So that’s what’s coming.”

Happily settled in England with husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and their children — including son Moses, 4 — Paltrow prefers to keep her kids in the dark when it comes to the joys of London living.

“I don’t think they know any different, it’s their home and it’s where they are. They don’t know about the teeth and the bad food yet — we’ll break that in eventually,” she jokes.

I am sorry, but she is just so full of herself. Being British maybe I’m a little sensitive, but I just can’t stand her…

“So my fear is always I’m going to come in there like the Hollywood nightmare and overdo it, which I’m going to do, but that’s okay.”

lol I love that quote.

It was funny on Letterman but it falls flat written. It’s always like that with Gwyneth for me. She sounds nice and funny in filmed interview but on paper her humor and tone doesn’t translate.

- Jade on

I love the clown of questionable nature part. Too funny. :)

@Jade

I totally agree! She’s really sarcastic and has a dry sense of humour, that most of the time people just take her seriously. She and Victoria Beckham would get along famously I think :D

- stephanie on

I get the humor of it: she’s a hollywood actress with an over-the-top sensibility for birthdays – she’s trying to make fun of herself a bit … but it still makes my eyes roll.

- Mrs. R on

It’s cute that the kid gets a petting zoo on her birthday but I don’t really get why you would need an event organizer for a child’s birthday party? Or why the petting zoo has to come to your place? Just take the kids to the petting zoo!

- Anna on

So she’s looking down her nose and mocking the English for their “grimy” birthday parties and bad teeth and food. Classy. What a great role model for her children. She needs to come off her high horse.

- Kristin on

Oh come on — it’s funny! I don’t understand why people always get offended by Gwyn. Yes, her world seems ridiculous and over-the-top and I can not relate in one bit. BUT that’s why I read about celebrities! She’s being sarcastic and pokes fun at herself. And as silly as it does seem to hire a planner for a little kid’s party, she can afford it and is probably providing for quite a few jobs in the process.

- mdallas on

she’s hilarious! some people can’t take jokes, geez. how pathetic. if she sounds conceited, its because she can! leave her alone!

- izzy on

I really like her in interviews, and thinks she comes across quite down to earth and funny.

I normally like Gwyneth Paltrow and find her quite funny but this one, I don’t know, it just rubs me up the wrong way somehow. Maybe it’s because she’s mocking ‘us Brits’; it seems to me that in the US parents often go over the top for Birthday parties whereas here parties are much more understated – she dislikes the church-hall style parties whereas several parents I know (myself included) think them unnecessary. Anyway, it doesn’t really matter but that’s just my musings. For my kids it’s a few friends round for a few finger sandwiches and crisps and some cake with a few games and plenty of excitement – mind you I have two sets of twins so we do two birthdays for each party.

- Elby on

i don’t think she means all b-day parties in england are grimy and ehhh…(maybe madonna’s). i think this is a cute lil article and it’s nice to know that her kid’s party is something simple and not like an over the top birthday party

- maggie on

Elby, I don’t know who these Americans are that are always going over the top, but I must have missed that memo.

Yes, first birthdays tend to be a little bit more of a big deal here, but beyond that. Some kids at a house with games, juice, and cake. That’s it.

And lighten up folks, she’s making fun of herself.

- Jen on

Hehe, so a lot of British people are this sensitive for real? I thought that was a rumor.

Gwyneth rocks and my goodness, those legs of hers are to die for!

- Hea on

File this one along with her comments about the British lack of customer service, bad weather, unhealthy food etc … it’s interesting that despite being wealthy, A-list, from a privileged background and so on Gwyneth seems to constantly feel the need to belittle others. Often whole nations. Why doesn’t she return to the US instead of bitching about her adopted country all the time?

- trax on

LMAO @ Hea’s comment :D

- stephanie on

We’re over-sensitive?! You’re the ones who can’t solve problems without guns, therapists or going to war. Or is that just a rumoUr too Hea?

Jen – it’s just the impression we get over here of American celebrations, same as you think we all have bad teeth, poor diets, talk about the weather and enjoy queuing ;) .

- Elby on

you people do realise she is joking? Or are you so full of your own selves you can’t see that??
Its a pretty standard joke that the Brits have bad teeth (Austin Powers…) and that Americans are loud and over the top. Surely your lives are not that depressing that you can’t have a laugh at yourselves and others in a good natured way…

- Steph on

Not english nor american but french and I think she’s an embarassment with her poor sense of humor (if she’s indeed joking!!).

- Virginie on

I fail to see how what she said is offensive. Americans DO like to go over the top with their kids’ birthday parties, and apparently that’s not the trend in the UK. I don’t like Gwyneth, but still.

Apple’s birthday sounds like a blast – I wish I could do that for mine this year ;)
