What’s Vanessa Williams‘ favorite mother-daughter activity?
Posing in the May issue of Essence with her girls — Jillian, 20, Sasha, 10, and Melanie, 22 — Williams says horseback riding with her daughters is close to her heart, as well as traveling with her own mother, Helen.
The Ugly Betty star, 47, who credits “doors that were opened by the women who came before” for the opportunities her daughters have today, tells the magazine that she looked back to her mom for inspiration while portraying editor-in-chief Wilhelmina Slater on the recently canceled show.
“My mother considers it a compliment,” Williams insists, saying mama Helen encouraged her to “dare to be different.”
Jillian and Melanie are Williams’ daughters with Ramon Hervey II, with whom she also has son Devin, 17, while Sasha is her daughter with Rick Fox.

Stepping out on a sunny Sunday in New York City, Katie Holmes and daughter Suri enjoyed a busy Easter day.
The duo caught DanceBrazil‘s final performance at The Joyce Theater before grabbing a meal at The City Bakery and heading back to their apartment.
Suri, who turns 4 this month, and Holmes are currently in the Big Apple while the actress films Son of No One with Al Pacino and Channing Tatum.

Robin Thicke had good reason for canceling his portion of a show with Alicia Keys Tuesday evening!
He and actress wife Paula Patton welcomed their first child, son Julian Fuego, on Tuesday, April 6th in Los Angeles, PEOPLE has confirmed exclusively.
“Mother, father and son are all doing well,” says Thicke’s rep, while Keys offered her congratulations from the stage.
Grandfather Alan Thicke says Julian “already has Robin’s voice, Paula’s sense of drama – he arrived a little early – and my hair.”

We had a Different World flashback when we spotted Jaden Smith at the Los Angeles premiere of The Perfect Game yesterday.
The trendy 11-year-old — who’s starring in the upcoming remake of Karate Kid — hit the red carpet with Dwayne Wayne’s (Kadeem Hardison) signature late-’80s look, flip-up sunglasses!
Could this be an homage to mom Jada Pinkett-Smith, who starred on the hit sitcom? After all, it did go off the air five years before Jaden was even born!
