Brooke Shields: Grier Is Mad About Makeup

Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic

After a childhood spent in the industry, Brooke Shields has made it clear that daughters Rowan Francis, 6½, and Grier Hammond, 4, will not be following in her footsteps — unless those steps lead toward the makeup trailer!

“Every now and then they’ll ask you to put your kids in a fun scene, so I asked and the little one said she would do it,” the actress shared during a Monday appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

“So she went through hair and makeup and got her wardrobe and then refused to do it because all she wanted to do was the hair and makeup. I was like, ‘You’ll never make it in Hollywood!’”

The “polar opposite” of Rowan — who Shields calls a “tomboy, really tough” — Grier prefers princess parties and playing dress up. Her latest obsession? Lipstick, Shields, 44, admits.

“They just called me from New York … and the little one got on the phone and she goes, ‘Mom, do you think I look pretty right now?’ And I’m like, ‘Why are you asking me that?’” she says.

“And she goes, ‘Because I have lipstick on.’ She has lipstick on all the time, that’s all she does.”

However, while Grier may feel all grown up, Shields still manages to pull the wool over her eyes — most recently for her seemingly extravagant fourth birthday bash.

“We had a movie premiere for Furry Vengeance — they had recreated a forest festival and there was a carnival in the back of the movie,” she laughs.

“My daughter thought the whole thing was for her. She was like, ‘You’re the best, Mom,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, I know.’ So I sort of got away with just a little barbecue and making my husband cook.”

“So I sort of got away with just a little barbecue and making my husband cook,” Brooke says here. HOW tacky is THAT?! She doesn’t even care to do anything at all for her daughter’s birthday, happy to pawn it off on her husband. NOT funny, Brooke. That sounds like a pretty lazy, non-caring mom to me. My mom and myself have always made fun, big deals out of birthdays for her kids, mine own, etc. It’s only ONCE a year, if THAT’S too difficult and boring for Brooke to handle, she shouldn’t have had kids. Geesh, feel sorry for her kids AND her husband. She must be a piece of work to live with.

Wow, Jay, CALM DOWN. I don’t think it’s tacky at all, kids’ birthday parties are a huge amount of work. It doesn’t make a difference to Grier, since she thinks she got a huge birthday party and also got a smaller family celebration, and it means that you don’t have to deal with a day of whiny, fighting kids hopped up on sugar. Doesn’t make her a bad mom.

Adi- Right on! Also, it sounds like she was saying it jokingly. :)

seriously Jay, especially at this age; it is OK to fool them. chill dude. time enough later for the real expense of a big “do” I applaud her for not throwing outlandish parties for a “baby” good for you Brooke.

Not to mention why is it so outrageous to expect a father to plan a birthday party? In their family, Brooke is a working parent as well. A special birthday dinner prepared by a loving father is a great birthday. Not sure why why anyone should chastise Brooke for being “happy to pawn it off on her husband” or why we should “feel sorry for her kids AND her husband”? Why, because he was responsible for the birthday party this year? Someone call CPS, Brooke entrusted her husband with parenting tasks!

To be honest, a barbecue, a fishing game, a cake and some baloons, that’s what my birthday parties looked like until I could plan them myself. After that I added treasure hunts, dress up boxes and decor and arranged masquerades, sleepovers, pool parties, fun outings etc. And I have never felt deprived of anything, maybe because that’s how my friends celebrated their birthdays too. I just remember how much fun I had, even at my 3rd “birthday party”, which was actually the opening of a big exhibition my mother had worked on, followed by an afterparty at a restaurant with a nice walled garden and a fountain. I apparantly talked about my great party for weeks afterwards and I have loved that restaurant since. It sounds as if Grier had a blast at “her” party, and that’s what’s important!

I think it is ridiculous to spend so much money on a birthday party for young children. They will hardly remember it anyway. I think what Brooke did sounds like a really nice birthday party, her daughter was with the people who love her. That is all that matters, also why is it so bad for her husband to cook? Jay, would you have said the same thing if things were reversed?
