Gwyneth Paltrow: Happiness Is Family, Food and Fart Jokes

Looks can be deceiving — and are, the majority of the time! — when it comes to paparazzi photos of Gwyneth Paltrow, husband Chris Martin, and their children Apple, 5½, and Moses, 4.

“The thing about the paparazzi, I realized, is it’s probably made me look like a really grumpy person,” the actress notes in the May issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

“Because when you get a magazine and you see someone with a scowl on her face, looking down, you’re like, ‘God, she looks like a bitch’ or ‘She looks like an unhappy old lady,'” Paltrow, 37, explains.

“But when you’re the person they’re taking a picture of, it’s like, ‘You just followed me and made my kid cry and you’re going to make money off it? You want me to look at you and smile? Are you out of your mind?'”

But away from the paparazzi, Paltrow and Martin — who fronts Coldplay — live a quiet life with their two children.

“When you’re having dinner with your kids and your husband or someone says something funny or you’re dying laughing because your 3-year-old made a fart joke, it doesn’t matter what else is going on,” she reveals. “That’s happiness.”

In order to maintain their sense of family, Paltrow has willingly sacrificed her career for the sake of the kids — most recently when she backed out of The Danish Girl, a role she was set to play alongside Nicole Kidman.

Noting that the demanding shooting schedule was taking a toll on Apple and Moses, the actress instead has been drawn to movies that accommodate her children’s needs as well.

Iron Man was heaven,” she raves. “The kids could come every day. They had their mini Jeep that they drove around the parking lot in front of my trailer.”

And while the couple of eight years keep their distance in the public eye, Paltrow admits her biggest fan will always be Martin.

“He is so great because he’s so supportive of me as an artist,” she says. “He’s always like, ‘We’ll make it work.’ I really lucked out with him. He’s deeply lovely and special.”

So true! Fart jokes are big in our family as well. There is always laughter in our house.

I love the importance Gwyneth places on her children. We working Moms know about that wobbly balance board and trying to keep it all together! Well done to Gwyneth for choosing to just ‘be Gwyneth’. AmoliaMae is a big fan of GOOP too!

I have always loved her. Never could understand why so much hate always thrown in her direction. She seems to have her priorities in check, and that is something to be admired. Plus I love her style and I love that she loves food!

I for one was happy to hear her speak highly of Chris…I have been waiting for news of their split for a while now. Just goes to show that she may be right about the tabloids. They’ve had them on the rocks for years.

I love her comment about smiling in paparazzi photos. People should keep that comment in mind the next time they wonder why Jessica Alba rarely smiles in pap photos! 🙂

I love how honest Gwyneth is in her interviews. She doesn’t always give the same old boring typical answers.

Oh my gosh !!!!!What is it about the FART jokes. Our daughter is 10 years old and we still crack up at her fart jokes. She throws in a little butt jokes with it sometimes also. Those are the times you will treasure for always !!!! So innocently funny.

she just reminds me so much of her mother… that quiet reserved LADY… who put her family first, but didn’t totally abandon her career… she worked, but had her priorities in place.

That’s as it should be.

I’ve liked GP the person for a long time and never got the hate some have for her. I think she’s very down to earth and I love GOOP.
