Growing up as the son of legendary actor Kirk Douglas was anything but a fairytale for Michael Douglas, who remembers a man with an unwavering dedication to his career. Despite the difficult upbringing, Michael mirrored his father’s life when he and his first wife Diandra Luker welcomed their son Cameron.
“My priorities were very similar [to my father's], career first,” Michael admits in the April issue of Vanity Fair. With his son facing sentencing for drug charges in April, the actor can only reflect on Cameron’s childhood.
“Anybody who has a relative or child in substance abuse has some idea of what this feels like. This is one of the worst-case scenarios,” he notes.
“It will ultimately be a painful lesson and very expensive as far as time is concerned. I don’t wish it on anybody, but then, you know, look, everybody’s got difficult things in life.”
Years later, Michael — having followed in his father’s footsteps — was finally ready to start anew when he met his current wife, actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, in 1998.
After announcing he planned to father her children during their first meeting — which intially turned her off! — the two eventually began a relationship, leading to their 2000 nuptials and the birth of Dylan Michael, 9 ½, and Carys Zeta, 6 ½.
And according to Catherine, Michael has been nothing short of a stellar dad the second time around. “I’m sure if he could breastfeed, he would have,” she laughs. “He has more time to spend with them and to focus on them.”
