Minnie Driver: There Is No 'Perfect Time' for Motherhood

Fame

At the age of 40, actress Minnie Driver is realistic about her odds of making son Henry Story, 18 months, a big brother.

“Growing up, I thought I’d have at least five kids,” she confesses in a new interview with the Times Online. “I’m surprised I have only one; I really want more.”

Although it was never her intention to wait until her late thirties to become a mom, Minnie says “it was never the right time, right place or right person.”

“Too many women put it off until everything is in place, but there’s never a perfect time, is there?”

Nonetheless, Minnie is quick to point out that she harbors no regrets about how life has unfolded.

“I wouldn’t change a thing about what I’ve done in the past because what may have been bad choices have all led me to this moment,” she insists. “I’m incredibly happy because I’ve got my beautiful baby and lovely partner.”

That partner — whom she again declines to identify, saying only that he is English, lives in California and is in the entertainment industry — is still very much a part of her life, and Henry’s. “Everybody is cool with the situation,” she reveals.

In Scotland to film The Deep, a new BBC drama, Minnie says that while she is happy to spend time in her native UK she remains very much a devoted Californian. “It’s been great for Henry to spend time with his cousins,” she explains before asking, “Could I move back? No.”

“I live my life outdoors, surfing, hiking, riding and running along the beach in the sunshine, having barbecues; even though I miss home, I could do the things I wanted to, personally and professionally.”

Helena Bonham Carter 'Growing Up Again' With Son

Daniele Venturelli/WireImage

Fantasy is something Helena Bonham Carter delights in as an actress, and the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree when it comes to her son Billy Ray, 6.

“Wave wands and pretend … that’s all he does,” the Alice in Wonderland star, 43, reveals to FearNet. “So I’m growing up with him again, and we’ve got a lot to talk about.”

“He said the other day, ‘Mom, do you have to be a queen or a witch tomorrow?’ It’s pretty much like that though — I’m a witch one day or a queen the other. It’s just lucky.”

Billy’s dad — and Helena’s longtime partner — Tim Burton also likes to disappear into his work, but for longer periods of time than Helena would like.

When asked whether Tim has approached her about appearing in his next project, Dark Shadows, Helena said no — and that she had more pressing concerns!

“What I just want to know is if he’s coming home now for the babies … Because we’ve been separated for six or seven months … He’s been stuck in his room drawing and directing and animating all this time.”

In addition to Billy, Helena and Tim are parents to Nell, 2.

Alice in Wonderland is in theaters now.

Ron Howard: Remember to Find the Laughs in Parenthood

Brian Ach/Wireimage

Director Ron Howard is the man he is today because of fatherhood, he reveals in a new interview with PARADE. “I think I’ve probably learned more and grown more because I’m a father than for any other reason,” he notes.

Now with his new series Parenthood, Ron is hopeful viewers will be able to see the lighter side of raising children. According to him, the task is made that much more difficult without a bit of laughter.

“Humor is unavoidable,” he muses. “It might not feel funny in the moment, but more often than not there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and you can personally look back and find the laughs in being a parent.”

While he confesses that he “felt pressure” when it came to fatherhood — “trying to do it right, to be what I should be to my kids” — the experience is one that Ron would never change. “At the same time, I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” he explains.

His doubts of being an adequate father were eventually put to rest when he received news that his wife Cheryl was expecting twins, four years after the couple welcomed their first child. “She was in a bed for three or four months and she was going crazy,” he recalls. “For the first time in my life, I had to take a lot of extra responsibility at home.”

Juggling his personal life while preparing to film Cocoon, Ron remembers he nearly succumbed to the pressure. “I had a few times when I had to ask myself, ‘Can I do this? Will I be able to do this?’” he shares. “And I suddenly realized that I could handle it. I think that was a watershed time in my life both as a parent and as a person.”
