Sarah Shahi: How I Handled My Home Birth

Courtesy Life & Style for use on CBB

There was no last-minute bag packing or rushing to the hospital for Sarah Shahi when she went into labor last July. Instead, after realizing that her water had broken, the actress grabbed her purse and her husband and headed out to enjoy their last day as a pair.

“I told my husband [Steve Howey], ‘I want to go, I don’t want to sit around and wait for the labor,’” she tells the February issue of Pregnancy.

After stopping for breakfast, Sarah got the urge to shop. “I was having contractions as I was walking through the shoe department,” she laughs.

“And then we went to American Apparel and we went to the liquor store — I bought a bottle of brandy.”

Calling it a day around 4 p.m., the couple returned home to begin to prepare for the arrival of their baby boy.

“I had a home birth because I really believe in the body’s natural ability to give birth. The medical profession has kind of warped women’s minds into thinking we don’t know how to birth and we need doctors and epidurals and Pitocin,” she explains.

Determined to welcome her son into “the world in a really loving, peaceful, warm environment that we were all very familiar with,” Sarah opted for a water birth assisted by a midwife.

Amidst tunes from Bob Marley and Frank Sinatra, as well as Salt-n-Pepa‘s “Push It,” the former Life star’s vision was fulfilled when William Wolf was born.

“The lights were dim and we had the heater going, so it was nice and warm,” she recalls. “[He] came out into a tub of water and then my husband brought him up for air,” she shares.

As for the new mom, a few extra minutes were needed to completely comprehend the experience.

“I was kind of shell-shocked when he came out. I was like, ‘What the f–k just happened? Oh my God, what do I do?’ And my midwife said, ‘Sarah, you need to turn around and hold your baby.’ It was much easier when he was in my belly.”

Todd Williamson/FilmMagic

Update: The couple have named their daughter Billie Beatrice Dane, their rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.

The couple’s daughter arrived on Wednesday, Mar. 3rd in Los Angeles, rep Nanci Ryder tells the Associated Press. “Mother, father and daughter are doing great,” said Ryder.

A name has not yet been released, but the Grey’s Anatomy star, 37, had previously said Rebecca, 38, wanted to meet the baby before making a final decision.

“I’m really excited,” Eric told Ellen DeGeneres last month. “I’m going to stay close to my wife and make sure that she is all right.”

The actors, who wed in Las Vegas in 2004, announced the pregnancy in November.

Maggie Gyllenhaal: Motherhood Informed My Crazy Heart Role

Daniel/Elder Ordonez/INF

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal has been open and honest about her reasons for accepting a role in Crazy Heart.

In a new interview with The Huffington Post she goes one step further, revealing that were she not a real life mom to daughter Ramona, 3, she couldn’t have portrayed Jean Craddock — an Academy Award-nominated performance — with any authenticity.

“I’ve played mothers before I was a mother and, I think, successfully — sometimes anyway,” she muses. “I’ve also played heroin addicts and have not been a heroin addict.” In Crazy Heart, however, Maggie says,

“My state as a mother … is a huge part of the movie for me. It’s also a huge part thematically of what happened to Jean.”

Noting that in Sherrybaby she played a mother, Maggie says that “it didn’t matter” because the character wasn’t the kind of mom that Maggie could identify with.

“I mean, that woman had never put a bag of Cheerios in her purse and had never put her hand in her coat and pulled out, like, a squeaking giraffe ever,” she jokes. “She gave birth, but that’s it.”

In Crazy Heart, however, the bond between her character and actor Jack Nation, who portrays her son, was different. “That’s sort of where it resonated,” she confesses.

“So it was almost better that I wasn’t a mom. Actually, I just watched this recently, I watched it at the premiere, and when asked, ‘What’s the most important thing about you?’ I say, ‘I have a child.’ So for me in this case, being a mother and the way I am a mother are all tied up in the performance.”

Ramona is Maggie’s only child with husband Peter Sarsgaard.

RD/Kirkland/Retna

While walking the red carpet at Sunday’s Academy Awards, Paula Patton kept one hand on her belly, noting that the son she expects in May will soon steal the show for her and husband Robin Thicke.

“I will stare at him all day long,” the 34-year-old actress promises.

Donning an orange, off-the-shoulder gown by Carolina Herrera, Paula says that the dress “just fits and works,” adding, “we made sure to find something that would accommodate the fit.”

Her choice garnered two thumbs up from Robin, who raved,

“Honestly, I think you look beautiful, you look perfect. You’re the hottest baby mama around.”

Baby boy — to be named Julian Fuego — will be the first child for the couple, who married in 2005.
