Hair Trend Alert! Melanie Brown and Her Girls Sport FauxHawks

Whittle/Splash News Online; Xposure

Although Angel Iris, 2 ½ , was the first in the family to rock the edgy hairstyle — here she is with her full-on mohawk last summer — mom Melanie Brown and big sis Phoenix Chi, 11, are now on board as well.

On Tuesday, we spotted the former Spice Girl and her eldest daughter — plus their matching side-shaved haircuts — at the opening night of musical CATS in Hollywood.

Melanie also showed off her new haircut while out shopping with her youngest on Feb. 22 in Los Angeles.

Tell Us: What do you think of their 80s style ‘dos?

Oh wow, I’m speechless! I didn’t know they all cut their hair :)

- Monique on

I like it! very fun. my mother would never have let me do something like this when I was a kid … much less do it with me! she just about had a conniption when I shaved my head in college :)

- ab on

I do not like their haircuts.

- KellyJ on

I love it on the baby but it looks kind of strange on a child and woman but I think its a fun fashion statement and we only live once so good for them!

- bren on

Is is just me or does Phoenix look extremely uncomfortable? Of course, it could be the presence of all of the photogs and she could just be uncomfortable getting her picture taken period…but for some reason I’m getting the feeling that she’s not too sure about her new cut.

- HeatherB on

It’s not my favorite look but I think that Melanie rocks it, Phoenix looks okay, and Angel’s look isn’t my favorite. But both kids are cute.

- Luna on

I LOVE the hair! I think it is super fun!

- Megan on

Hilarious! Love the family look! Hair grows back & it’s all in fun.

- Mary-Helen on

Did she do this because of the backlash over cutting Angel’s hair first?

- Chris on

I certainly don’t like it at all!

- marina on

I know that assumptions sucks but this particular hairy discussion on Angel’s hairdo (and now Phoenix’s)makes me wonder if the backlash is partly (or completely) based on people’s lack of understanding of the African Diaspora’s relation with hair and aesthetics.Yes, not all people of African descent think alike or judge things in the same way,but I know for a fact that the concept of beauty, particularly related to hair and hair health, is very different from what white Americans with limited,no or shallow contact with African Americans consider pretty or adequate. What is pretty and child-friendly in one community does not automatically translate into the pretty and child-friendly of another community.I don’t know much about Melanie Brown in particular but I have definitely heard complains from white parents in predominantly white areas who don’t get and freak out about the hair-do and cut AA give to their children.

And HeatherB,the reason why you get this “vibe” is because you are projecting your own feelings on the hair style onto a random snapshot of a child you do not know. It’s a profile picture where she actually appears to be smiling, albeit not a very cheery smile from this angle. And unless she just had the haircut and she’s in tears for everyone to see,it is a long shot to assume that you can get a hint on what is going through Phoenix’s mind in that second. She could be thinking “mmm,I’m sleepy” or “I wonder what would if I did the hula on a submarine wearing a sombrero” or anything above and under the sky.

- eva on

Are you serious? Their haircuts look absolutely horrible! Little Angel looks like a little boy for a few years now since she got her head shaved last time I saw her pic. Come on Melanie, make your girls look like girls and not boys! What in the world are you doing? Do you want the attention of everyone! I realize hair grows back, but look like girls, not boys!!

- Davina on

I LOVE it! I call them FROhawks. :)

- nettrice on

I forgot to add that I did the same myself in college when I grew tired of processing my lovely, coarse/nappy hair. I told my friend to shave it all off (except for the top) and he also carved a design at the nape of my neck. A relative told me she thought it was ugly and that made me all the more proud to wear my new “do”!

- nettrice on

Well said, Eva. I agree with everything you wrote.

- giftbox on

@Davina: What’s wrong with a girl looking like a boy?

- Lola on

I actually love their hairdo! it suits them!

- blackrose on

not a haircut i would choose for myself but that is totally irrelevant. how nice, they are doing something different, realising there is no reason to fret about the small things and allowing their daughters to be different. why not? they’re not hurting anyone…

- JM on

i love it! its awesome and different! they r beautiful girls! how does these haircuts make them look like boys?! they dont look like boys at all! they all have their own unique style. jeez, why do ppl think girls and women have to have long flowing hair and preppy girly clothes? everyones different–its called diversity. we dont want everyone to look the same! theres no fun in that!

- adrienne on

Well Eva, it seems that you are doing exactly what you accused me of. I never said that I don’t like the cut. The reason you are assuming that I don’t like the cut is because you are projecting your OWN feelings by getting defensive about african american culture. (sound familiar?) By reading your comments, it sure seems like you have a bone to pick with “white amerians”. What if I told you I was african american, would that change what you have to say regarding my post? Why does it have to be a african american vs. white american thing? Why can’t people just simply not like the cut?
Anyways, thanks for informing me of just exactly why I got that “vibe”…I thoroughly enjoyed the free therapy session. :)

- MissHeather on

Three beautiful girls, one ugly hairstyle. :)

- Erica on

Yuck! Not feelin’ any of them! I just think it’s too drastic of a style for kids, especially a 2 yr old. I don’t believe in radical and outrageous hairstyles for kids unless they are in their teens. Phoenix is old enough to voice her desire for the cut, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I would let her do it. But that’s just my opinion. Of course it’s only hair and will grow back….but then why do it in the first place??? Ugh, I’m conflicted! LOL!

- daniela on

yes to eva.

- fuzibuni on

I just wish more people would be open to difference. From a microscopic level to macro we are all unique in some way and have freedom to express ourselves, including the way we express through hair (or lack of it). I see hair styles that I myself would never wear or allow my children to wear but that doesn’t mean I can’t admire or appreciate other people who wear it.

- nettrice on

It’s hair! It grows! Why on earth would you *NOT* let your kids experiment with their hair while they’re young? Mohawk, bleach blond, crazy curls, shaved heads, braids, blue streaks… so what?!?!

If you constantly force them to look they way YOU want them to look, when is it their turn to express themselves? When they’re 20 and trying to get a job and having to deal with employers thinking they’re immature for having a different hairstyle?

You ladies rock those cuts!! Rock on!!

- Janna on

I don’t like the cuts but I’m sure Melanie could care less. :) I do like the solidarity she’s showing with her girls.

- LeFleur on

nettrice: thank u,,i agree with u very much, i basically am sayin the same thing,i wouldnt have this hairstyle but i admire ppl for who they r and how they choose to have their hair,or what they choose to wear etc. everybodys unique, and yes people should be more open to difference.:):)

- adrienne on

Well, it’s interesting. I wonder why Melanie (or the girls) chose that particular cut. It’s not very pretty but it is different! Yes I think young Phoenix does look uncomfortable, almost embarrassed, but also could be the paps.

I say NO to Eva (more like HUH????) and YES to HeatherB.

- Sam on

I love it. Its not my personal style but I think its cute on all 3 ladies.

Angel’s do is the best. I’ve gotten used to seeing her hair like this so its not a big deal anymore.

- Lola Marie on

It’s not something I would wear but if they like it, go for it!! It’s just hair, it grows back.

Me personally, I’m partial to hair dye. I’m rocking 3 different colors right now. lol

- Mina on

As a general rule, I make a point not to get involved in other people’s comments but I’m breaking that rule today. Eva, I hope you did not mean your words to be as harsh as they came across because they came across downright mean. HeatherB. expressed an honest and well-written thought. Her comment was not ugly in the least. Yet for some reason, you felt the need to go on the attack. I don’t understand that kind of mindset.

HeatherB.- I have to say, I really liked the “free therapy” comment. It might be sarcastic, but I probably would have said the same thing!

- Tee on

Interesting, in a nice way.

- True on

I love it! Very edgy and stylish (in a punk way). I think it’s great to play with hair as it does grow back. I was all sorts of colours when I was younger.

- Lorus on

So ugly on those little girls !!

- j on

awful.

- sil on

I don’t see why everyones getting so upset with the hair cuts it’s hair it grows back I happen to like it and maybe the kids wanted it it’s not like Melanie made them get it done and for all the people who say they hate it try to be more open minded and less negative

- Maeve on

LOL about the AA debate. You realise that Melanie Brown is not American right? She’s from England! LOL.

- Jenn on

The “look like a boy” “look like a girl” trend lately is driving me crazy. I had no idea there were still so many people hung up on gender issues. It’s 2010.

- brannon on

maeve and brannon i agree with both of you. i couldn’t imagine what kind of a high strung, stressed out person i’d have to be if i got this upset by other people’s children’s haircuts, or little girls not being dressed in pinks and frills. so pathetic that people are so insecure and get upset about this. and yeah, it’s 2010, when will we finally leave this weird sexism behind?

- JM on

Jenn, perhaps African Diaspora would suffice? Angel’s father happens to be “AA” and frohawk hair is intercontinental. Just ask Willow Smith and her parents Will and Jada!

- nettrice on

Whatever nettrice. I think the debate is ridiculous and it doesn’t matter if the people involved are black, white, brown, red, yellow, green or purple. It’s hair. It grows back. It’s not your head or your child’s head so there’s no sense getting all worked up and attack people’s comments over it. Eva’s post made sure to point out that MissHeather/HeatherB must not have any contact with African Americans, so I just wanted to point out that Melanie isn’t American, so what she does with her children’s hair doesn’t have anything to to with what American’s do. And what do Will, Jada, and Willow have to do with anything? I don’t see them in the pictures.

- Jenn on

the way i read it, the first part of eva’s comment was not directed to heather it was a general comment which she is entitled to… i think it’s easy to dismiss her thoughts if you have not had her experience.

- fuzibuni on

Ahm, yeah. No. I personally am all for letting kids be kids, and being an individual, yadda yadda yadda, but I also think there is such a thing as taking it too far. This, in my opinion is too far. Shiloh Jolie-Pitt’s short ‘do? Fine by me. Angel’s mohawk? Not so much. There’s a point where you’ve gotta ask yourself exactly why a parent feels the need to express themselves by doing something to their kid. And I’m sorry, but Angel was about the same age as my youngest when she got that haircut last year, and I know there is no way on earth she asked for that. That was all her parent’s doing.

- Shannon on

There was an episode on Tyra about this hair topic. Jenn, I think I understand what Nettrice means.Everyone is so split about AA hair.Yes Mel is English, but she is also has african roots (a nicer way of saying she is black or has black ancestry).I know so many AA american ladies that are obsessed with their hair. And the uncomfortable treatments these poor little kids have to g through to make them more socially acceptable and whatnot is ridiculous. I can completely see what would make Nettrice say screw it, and just shave it off.I know my friends mom gave her good licks one day for cutting her hair, that had taken her like a few years to get to the shoulder length it was at, because it would break easily. Its good to see a mom empowering her girls to be independant and form their own beauty standards, rather than following the warped ones society has.

- Rach on

Little Angel looks absolutely adorable!

- Stella Bella on

The words “African Diaspora” are key. And no,I have no bone to pick with “white americans” given the fact that I am one.My “bone” is with the overflow of nasty comments and neurosis that breaks loose every time a perfect stranger decides to cut a child’s hair.I do wonder why people are this insane, anal and intolerant. My comment is a theory to at least partly explain where this is coming from and I stand by it.I do believe that some people could really benefit from stepping out of suburbia and wondering why other people do things the way they do.Perhaps looking into history and communities could clue some people in.I never felt attacked by HeatherB’s comment,I was completely shocked by how much interpretation and assumption went into a singly picture taken on an undetermined moment that probably had nothing to do with hair. And yes,I reacted strongly and I stand by it.No,I’m not doing the same thing that you did because I read your words and you signed them.Through comments we’re heard but not through pictures. No, being AA changes nothing for me.The two paragraphs were two entirely different issues. One is my personal theory on what could be going on and the other addressing a comment that surprised me and absolutely had to address directly and strongly, because I felt it was important.

- eva on

Shannon- You’d be surprised what toddlers are capable of! Right after Angel first got her buzz cut, I read somewhere that she really liks Rihanna (who, at the time, was sporting a buzz cut as well). So maybe she saw a picture of Rihanna and told her mommy she wanted hair like Rihanna’s. :)

Or maybe the decision to cut Angel’s hair was made out of neccesity. For example, she may have gotten hold of a pair of scissors and cut her own hair, gotten gum or something else sticky in her hair, etc, and that was the only way for them to “fix” it. :)

- CelebBabyLover on

Also, I fail to see how Angel looks like a boy in this picture! She has on a pink shirt, pink socks, and what look to be “girl” shoes, for goodness sake!

- CelebBabyLover on

I don’t think Jenn realizes that Will and Jada let their own daughter shave the sides of her head in a similar fashion but anyway…Rach you get an A++ for understanding! Hair is a big deal for African Diasporic people, not matter where they live. In middle school home economics there was a class on hair hygiene and the class was shocked to hear that I did not need to wash my hair more than once every two weeks. When told why the teacher explained the differences but why did I have to do her job for her?!

- nettrice on

i think all you haters are hating on their haircuts because you can’t pull them off!!!!!

- lover on

well, CBB did ask what people thought of the hairdos and people responded. I personally don’t care for the look either. That’s MY opinion.

- LB on

I’m black and granted I wouldn’t particularly choose the style Melanie has because some of us black women have a hard hard growing our hair…..its her kids and her choice.

I really find it so pathetic that people come on here to argue about what other people do w/ themselves and their children. I mean seriously….is it a slow news day or something???

And I completely agree w/ you Lover, I think some people are hating because they know they cant rock it!!!!

- Brownsugar1313 on

i would rather have mel’s hair than angel’s. because you can cover it up by parting down the middle but with angel’s … oh god :(
