Naomi Watts Dishes On Sons' Latest Milestones

Jackson Lee/Splash News Online

The apple didn’t fall far the tree when it comes to 2 ½-year-old Alexander ‘Sasha’ Pete Schreiber — so says his mom, actress Naomi Watts.

“He’s acting now … a lot of acting,” she jokingly reported to Celebrity Baby Blog backstage at the Calvin Klein fashion show in New York City recently. Insisting that she’s “not a stage mother,” Naomi later revealed that her firstborn “likes to play little characters.”

With that said, her second child with fiancé Liev Schreiber — 14-month-old Samuel Kai — has also been giving the couple plenty of reasons to celebrate.

“Kai is definitely starting to talk. He says ‘book,’ ‘apple’ and ‘banana,’ ‘Sasha’ — his brother’s name — and ‘Mommy’ and ‘Daddy.’”

Sporting a dress and cashmere coat, Naomi, 41, appeared fresh and well-rested at the event — and for good reason!

“Both kids slept through,” she revealed. “It was a good night last night.”

Why didn’t they just name their kids Sasha and Kai if thats what they intended on calling them? Just curious haha

I understand the nickname of Sasha for Alexander. But I have never understood going by the middle name although a lot of people follow that practice. My husband goes by his middle name because they wanted to name him after his father but called him by his middle name so it wouldn’t be confusing. His mother has never given me a good reason so to why they just didn’t give his father’s name for his middle name.

sasha is a nickname.
when kai was born, they originally called him samuel, but went with kai as they got to know him.

Kai is talking now……Wow – he grew up quickly!!!

its nobody’s business why they call their kids what they do. there’s no law that says you need to call people by their given names. they’re nicknames. end of story.

Maybe they wanted more traditional first names for when the boys grow up. Sasha and Kai are pretty unconventional, and there have been studies that show that people unconsciously treat people better if they have “normal” names – like Alexander and Samuel. Maybe they’re family names – Liev is Jewish, and it’s traditional to name babies after deceased loved ones. Who knows?

As far as the name thing goes….Naomi and Liev have never, to my knowledge, given a reason as to why they didn’t just name Sasha what they were going to call him. However, I remember Naomi or Liev (I can’t remember which) saying in an interview shortly after Kai’s birth that they couldn’t decide if they wanted to name him Kai Samuel or Samuel Kai. Obviously they eventually settled on the latter.

I’m guessing they ended up calling him “Kai”, because they decided they didn’t like Samuel as a first name very much.

Maybe when Sasha grows up he’ll start to want to be called Alexander. That’s the nice thing about nicknames, unlike “real names”, they’re not written in stone (a/k/a birth certificate).

Wow does time march, or rather race on or what?! The fact that Kai is talking is really great! Sasha is acting? Why would he do that for? Oh yeah, both parents are actors. Maybe he’ll do what my niece did..become a cop instead. Well, most kids act at that age anyway, but he has great inspiration both parents are really good at it. Maybe they’ll follow in their footsteps. They sure would win baby beauty contests at the least, they are adorable!

Wow! does time march or race on or what?! The fact that what both parents wish to name their kids or give them nicknames is of course their right. Sasha is a perfectly acceptable nickname for Alexander, and Kai is unusual at best and probably fits him well. Besides there will no confusion as who is who in that family or among friends, like in our family. I mean who in their right mind would name on daughter Patricia and the other Pamela? My brother’s names were Mike and Bob. They spent a great deal of time being called Mob and Bike then their actual names. I mean really we spent more time wondering who in the world my mother was really talking too.
