In a new interview with The Times Online, actress Julianne Moore says that “nagging” is the key to getting good results from son Caleb, 12, and daughter Liv Helen, 7 ½.
“My son made his bed this morning and I couldn’t believe it,” she shares. “Every day I’m like, ‘Make-your-bed, make-your-bed.”
Together with husband Bart Freundlich, Julianne is eager to convey to her children just how much they have to be grateful for. “The kids go to a Quaker school and their father and I believe a lot in community and making sure you give to people less fortunate than you,” she shares. “We talk about responsibility a lot.”
Like many parents, Julianne, 49, admits she occasionally worries that Cal and Liv — who attend swimming, ice skating and guitar lessons — are spoiled. “My parents couldn’t afford any of that,” she notes. “I didn’t learn to swim until I was 26.”
The trappings of fame aside, Julianne says that her children “see it as separate” from their mom. She adds,
“I always say, ‘I’m not on the cover because I’m famous. It’s because it’s my job, I’m in a movie.’ I stress work and accomplishment and not celebrity.”
Motherhood was “the one thing” Julianne says she always knew she would pursue. “It was a pretty acute desire,” she recalls, but one which was fulfilled a little later than she had planned! She explains,
“I was determined to have a baby by the time I was 36. My son was born the day after my 37th birthday. He was three weeks late. It was like the universe was laughing, saying, ‘You see, you can’t control things.’”
