Tracy Morgan Credits Sons With His 'Rescue'

Byron Purvis/AdMedia

In a new interview with The Tavis Smiley Show, Tracy Morgan attributes his sobriety to family.

Following arrests in 2005 and 2006 for DUI, the 30 Rock star was ordered to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet; His 21-year marriage to ex-wife Sabina Morgan soon came to an end and the couple’s three sons Tracy Jr., 23, Malcolm, 22, and Gitrid, 18, were left feeling “disappointed” by their dad, he says.

“I’m walking around with a bracelet on my ankle and my son [is] looking at me like I’m Kunta Kinte,” Tracy recalls. When Gitrid began to ask, “What if I started drinking and driving? Would that be cool?” Tracy knew he needed to make a change.

“That was it for me,” he insists. “That was the end of it.”

“That right there just made me look in the mirror like, I got to step up my game. So I did, and I’m glad it came from my son. I love him.”

Tracy is quick to add that it isn’t the first time Gitrid and his brothers saved their dad. “Before, I was on the street corner in Brooklyn hanging out, just hanging out,” he explains. “Then I had these kids, and they gave me responsibility and made me grow up and become a man, so again, there he was to rescue me.”

If Tracy has his way, Gitrid will soon be helping others as well. After his youngest son voiced uncertainty about what to do with his life, Tracy advised him to give back.

“I said, ‘Well, you’re 18,’” Tracy recalls. “If you really don’t know what to do with your life, go help somebody.”

Tracy’s new film Cop Out opens Feb. 26th.

“I’m walking around with a bracelet on my ankle and my son looking at me like I’m Kunta Kinte,”

Really? Is he kidding? He compares his life after two willful DUIs (that endangered the lives of everyone in his path) with being sold into slavery, maimed, beaten and tortured?

Sounds interesting.

I think his son got him to see he was a slave to his irresponsibility. Out of the mouth of babes, you know?

- Angi on

In a sense he was a slave to his alcoholism. Or he likened the alcohol monitoring bracelet to the ankle cuffs on Kunta Kinte.

I am floored by his remark to his son to ‘go help somebody’. WOW! What a great parent to encourage his son to go and give to his community – especially because his sons have had to want for nothing in their own lives… even when their father was under house arrest…

Tracy clearly has repented for his mistakes… but it sounds like he has done a great job raising his kids.

I think you read way too much into it Janna..I’m all for holding people accountable for their words, their actions but there are too many sensitive Sallys just waiting to jump down other peoples throats.

- Gabbadoo on

I agree…Jana you are taking his comment way to literally. I agree w/ the people who saw the comparison of him being a slave to his vice thats how I percieved it also.

Good for him, it takes a strong person to admit they have a problem and sometimes the realization that you need help comes from the most unlikeliest of places.

I also commend him for encouraging his kids to give back. We live in a society where a lot of these kids grow up with the feeling of entitlement and until they are humbled and realize that the world owes them NOTHING, they will always have that self absorbed entitlement streak running through them.

I wish him all the best of luck on his sobriety and while I say that I have to say…I’m still in shock that Tracy Morgan has kids over the age of 20…lol. Crazy!!!

I think he was just referring to ankle shackles. Nothing more, nothing less.

- Molly on

I remember when he was on Martin as Hustle Man. I thought that he was so funny.
Anyway, I am glad that he has gotten himself together. I’m sure that the road back to sobriety was hard. Hollywood and fame can that make you feel invincible. Usually, our children are very honest with us (parents) and tell it like it is.

It remains to be seen whether he has gotten his life together. I wouldn’t take his word for it.
