Maggie Gyllenhaal Hopes Daughter Has a 'Laid-Back' Life

There are varying levels of fame, and while actors Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard are stars by any definition, they’re not so famous that they can afford to be especially choosy with the roles they’re offered, the Oscar-nominated Crazy Heart actress says.

“If we were Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, we could say, ‘Oh yes, I’ll make that movie, but it must be in New York and it must be filmed before midsummer break,’ but we’re not,” she notes in a new interview with the Herald Sun. “If Martin Scorsese calls and tells me I need to be in Nova Scotia for six months, then I probably need to do that.”

By extension, that means that the couple’s 3-year-old daughter Ramona is along for the ride — something which “worries” Maggie.

“We’ve traveled around a lot with Ramona and, while there are some wonderful things about that, what a young child really wants is stability and routine; she wants a sense of home. We’ve been trying to protect that and it’s one of our biggest challenges.”

Growing up with screenwriter Naomi Foner for a mom and director Stephen Gyllenhaal for a dad, Maggie was already well-versed in the entertainment industry. While Peter thinks such an upbringing must have been “amazing” Maggie says that her childhood was nothing like Ramona’s.

“I don’t think it was as intense as the life my daughter is leading, in the sense that my parents weren’t well-known,” she points out. “Yes, they made small movies, but we didn’t lead a big, glitzy, fancy life.”

“I think my daughter’s life will be more like that, although I’m trying to keep it as laid-back and calm as possible for her.”

The effort to balance work with family is something Maggie confesses she thinks about “all the time.” The thrill of life on set and the fun of dressing up for award shows aside, the 32-year-old actress says that “the amount of work it takes to be a mom is greater than anything else.” She adds,

“It brings you to your knees. I can’t do all of it perfectly by any means.”

That much was evident after in the weeks and months postpartum.

“I had about five movies that came out while I was pregnant and, although I was nauseous at the beginning, I was able to promote them,” she explains. “Then Ramona was born and I couldn’t even pick up the phone to do an interview.”

“I couldn’t take my eyes off her. Having an infant is so hard and complicated. It’s very intense.”

Methinks they’re doing okay. If they do want stability, they can always choose not to do location shoots. I think they are already rich enough to choose films accordingly.

I’m a Maggie fan, and it totally just cracked me up that she mentioned Nova Scotia! As you may have guessed, I’m from Nova Scotia! :) We’d be more than happy to have you and Scorsese!:D

She shouldn’t have mention the jolie-pitts name….she could have made her point without that.

Dah, she wasn’t saying anything negative about them. It’s the truth. They’ve each been in numerous films and have come to be quite respected in Hollywood. Maggie, while extremely talented, does not have the same “voice” that Angie and Brad do.

I liked this because she is not complaining. She is just being honest about concerns that she has about whether she is doing the best for her child, which is something everyone can relate to. And I agree, she doesn’t say anything bad about the Jolie-Pitts. Just that they have the ability to be very picky about their roles.

I *heart* Maggie. She seems like such a grounded actor – usually an oxymoron! I think she was trying to say certain level stars get to call all their own shots, that’s all. She’s not one of them. (But she should be, for her work in “Sherrybaby” alone!)

All Women- You think they’re rich enough? She just indicated that wasn’t the case…yet somehow you know better? There’s nothing wrong with a little sacrifice to care for your family.

As far as the money thing, only they know. But it’s expensive to live and raise a family, especially in New York City, for anyone, even celebrities. And both of them, while I don’t think they are crying poverty, have done mostly small movies or small roles in big movies. I’m sure they have to keep working in order to provide for themselves and their child, just like everyone else.

i just love love love the name Ramona! Sadly for me my fiance prefers more ‘traditional’ names ;)

Even if she had “enough” money to afford not to work, why should she? She’s an artist, and thus probably wants to work and express herself through her art just like everyone else. If someone actually has the luxury to work in something they enjoy, then why should they stop?

I seriously doubt Maggie G. earns $1M a picture!! She only does independent films with maybe a small role in a big movie now and again. Her husband is the same, though he’s been around a bit longer. Not every actor/actress can damand $20M + back end like Angelina and Brad can. So, whether she wants to or not, Maggie could ill afford to turn down a good role. And, of course, she shouldn’t have to give up acting. She’s a working mother like most women in America.

@ Steph Our 17 month old daughter is called RAMONA :) a very very very beautiful name, people adore her name, i love it coz its not so popular n oh my husband chose the name for her :)

I don’t think it’s as much about money as it is about wanting to make good movies. I get the impression that in the movie biz if you turn down to many offers then the offers dry up and you have a hard time breaking back into the business. I’m sure she’s worked hard and its seems silly to give it up at 32 if she doesn’t have to. Honestly, she comes across as someone who would if it was hurting her daughter. It takes a pretty high powered star to be able to dictate the terms of their movie making. I’d bet there are far fewer than most of us realize.

On a different note, I read a Q&A with her and she said she wanted to be Emma Thompson when she grows up. (she worked with her last year) I love Emma and really how can you go wrong looking up to someone like her. :)

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
