Angie Harmon: Fame Is 'Starting to Enter' Daughter's Mind

Kevan Brooks/AdMedia

Fame is a hard concept for some adults to grasp, let alone children, but Angie Harmon says that she recently had to explain as much to daughter Finley Faith, whom she describes as “a very, very young six.”

“It was like 4:30 in the morning,” Angie tells Celebrity Baby Blog exclusively. “She was sick as a dog [and] we were down in the theater watching a movie because that’s what we do when she’s sick.”

Suddenly, Finley looked at Angie — whose new television series Rizzoli will debut later this year on TNT — and asked, “Mommy, are you famous?”

“I looked at her and said, ‘Well what’s famous?’ And she goes ‘Cool.’ So I had to had a big talk with her that famous does not equal cool … I said famous means a lot of people recognize me because of my job but that doesn’t make me cool.”

Instead, Angie said she explained that “what makes me cool is how I treat other people and how I treat other human beings, with respect and kindness.” The actress, 37, said she then pointed out that by her definition, Finley is “just as cool” as her mom. Angie adds,

“She probably didn’t get any of it because she was so sick! But I think it’s starting to enter her mind.”

In addition to Finley, Angie is mom to daughters Avery Grace, 4 ½, and Emery Hope, 13 months, with husband Jason Sehorn.

I think she’s a good actress. But I don’t consider her that famous…

- Karina on

That’s cute how she explained that to Finley makes sense as she’s the oldest one too, and that pic of Emery is still so cute :)

- Rashida on

Very cute story, but if she really wants to treat people well, she should probably refrain from saying “we were down in the theater” while average Americans are suffering through a recession.

- stellan on

She may not be super-famous, but Angie is definitely a frequently recognized face. Especially in Dallas.

- martina on

I wouldn’t consider her famous. I think it’s funny when kids ask a parent a simple question and the parent uses it as an opportunity to start talking about some deep character building issue. Her daughter probably just wanted a simple yes or no answer to the question. :)

- Chris on

Stellan, why should she do that? She’s not the cause of the recession and I highly doubt she was saying it in a condescending way.

Some people are overly sensative. And before I get criticized, I am by no means sitting on a mountain of money. I just think it’s ridiculous to expect celebrities to alter stories of their day to day life because they may or may not be upsetting someone somewhere.

- Ashleigh on

What is wrong with saying she was “down in the theater” if that is where they were at??? Why is there always a poster on this site who insists that other people should censor themselves to protect the ‘feelings’ of those who do not have what they have?? Jealous much people???

- cris on

Yeah, I too thought “down in the theater” did not need to be mentioned even if she is not the cause of the recession.

Most people watch movies in their living room. Lol.

- nosoupforyou on

My Gosh, I have never posted a comment on this site but I had to this time. Alot of “normal” non celebrities folks have home theaters and if that is where she was then that is where she was. Why should people walk on egg shells if there intention is not to hurt someone just telling a story..Sheesh.

- JP on

I misunderstood at first and was thinking she said she took her daughter out to “a theater” at 4:30 in the morning, and when she was really sick. My thoughts were that she was crazy to take a child out of the house in the middle of the night while sick. And then what theater is open at 4:30, except maybe one that shows adult movies?

Now my only comment is that I know some not so rich people who have figured out a way to have a very nice home theater in their house. People spend money on what is important for them. For some, it is travel. For others it is jewelry or expensive bags. Some like to spend it on multiple fancy cars. While Angie and Jason have much more to spend than the average family, having a home theater sounds like one nice way to spend time together as a family.

- em on

Why are people sooooo sensitive????? She works hard for her money and if she wants to have a theater she can. I know a few people where i live that have theaters in there basements. Why do celebrities have to be so PC? Remember people the first Admentment is freedom of speech not oops i have to watch what i say so i dont hurt senstive peoples feelings

- Misha on

she isn’t famous enough for the people who live their lives watching reality tv, but for those of us who prefer mentally stimulating tv, (i.e. law and order where she plays the A.D.A.) you would know who she is. she is famous, but she stays out of the spotlight.

i find it funny how some people are posting that she’s not famous, somewhat trying to make her seem conceited or dishonest or something, but they criticize other celebrity mothers for being “too” in the spotlight. she has a family outside the spotlight AND she IS famous.

- girl on

Yeah, I thought “we were down in the theater”, sounded kinda snobby. But then again, I might be jealous that she has a “theater” and I don’t…lol! Angie does seem to be a hands on mother.

- Lynn on

I didn’t say Angie Harmon started the recession. Nor did I say that she was being condescending. I just commented on an article that had a line I found surprisingly elitist coming from an otherwise sensitive actress. So I’m feeling okay with what I wrote, as I head down to my solarium (some would say ‘porch’) to be with family and friends. Happy Valentine’s Day! :-)

- stellan on

She shouldn’t have to apologize for having money and spending it however she sees fit.

And I’m not saying that as a fan – I knew someone who was on a plane with her and the flight was delayed, and she threw a huge diva fit about how she was too important to wait. That definitely stopped me from being a fan of hers. But it’s her money. I think most people would buy nice things for themselves if they had as much money as she does.

- Molly on

She just looooooves patting herself on the back. [golf claps for basic parenting 101]

- christina on

You guys are really reaching for something negative here….

- Jessicad on

I just love the names of her three girls. I think that every time I see a post about her and her family. The names sound so beautiful together and each on its own. Finley looks so sweet in that photo.

- jen on

I think that was a really good answer to the question. She didn’t toot her own horn and she spoke about what makes a good person to Finley. However, I really don’t like the name Finley Faith. I had to say it. But anyway, go Angie on being a parent who is an example to her child.

- Luna on

“And I’m not saying that as a fan – I knew someone who was on a plane with her and the flight was delayed, and she threw a huge diva fit about how she was too important to wait. That definitely stopped me from being a fan of hers.”

I’m not a fan of her either. Someone I know happened to be in the same restaurant as her after Finley was born, but didn’t know Angie was there. That person commented they didn’t like boy’s names for girls or the Irish surname as a first name trend. Nobody said a thing about Angie & her kit, and yet Angie stomped over later to randomly say “I *LIKE* my daughter’s name! I don’t care what you think!” Just totally unnecessary behavior on Angie’s part : P

- megan on

Well Megan, If someone was sitting there talking about how they hated what you just named your new baby, I would be a little upset too. And if she felt offend, which seems to be the case, she probably put that friend of yours in place. Which to me is very funny. If I was sitting in a restaurant and some gossipy girls were talking about how they don’t like ” Pink hats” and I was wearing a “pink hat’ I would say something sassy to them too.
And Yes Angie Harmon is famous.

- kat on

FYI — Home theaters are very common in the Dallas area. A lot of your average middle class families in the suburbs have home theaters in the Dallas area. They are in most of the floor plans for new houses in this area over the last 5+ years, even the smaller ones (as in under 2,000 sq. feet, which in the Dallas area is small for a new home). You have to remember that in Texas, we are stereotyped as having to have everything “big” because, in reality, we do. And, Dallas society is the basis for the whole “keeping up with the Joneses” saying, so Angie is perfectly normal for Dallas “society”.

- Amanda on

And the quality of the comments takes another trip downhill…

- Lauren on

Amanda makes a good point…however, it is not just Dallas that home theaters are common in, all around the country they have become very popular in new construction (with the exception of the low-priced cookie-cutter homes). I live in Seattle (and work in the real estate business) and all around here it is very common to see home theaters…kind of how stainless steel appliances and granite countertops used to be a higher-end ‘luxury’ and it is now commonly seen in apartments and lower-end homes.

( BTW, Amanda, I did have to laugh at how many times you mentioned “Dallas’ in your post!LOL!!)

- cris on

Exactly, if Angie Harmon is on a site called Celebrity Baby Blog, I think she qualifies as famous.

As for home theaters…I know a lot of people who aren’t “rich” but they have opted to turn a spare bedroom or den into a “theater room.”

- Ashlee on

I don’t think she meant anything by saying they were in their home theatre. If they were in that room of the house, then that’s where they were at. Would you rather her lie and say they were in another room? If I had enough money, I would. I’m in Colorado, and in many areas of construction (old and new) it’s a common thing to have a one.

- Sarah M. on

She seems very sweet and the girls are so cute!

And I didn’t think the theatre thing was weird at all- I know a family (middle class) who have a ‘living room’ and a television room which they sometimes call ‘the theatre’. It’s not even a big room, it’s just what they call it.

- Erika on

WoW… Unbelievable. Subject matter here is parenting and I, for one, think she had a GREAT answer to an elementary question.

- LoraBora on

kat- I agree! And it’s very possibly that Angie mistakenly thought that those people were talking specifically about her. Also, add in the fact that she had a newborn at the time (new mothers are often very emotinal, due to hormone changes and such), and I’m not surprised she acted the way she did!

As for the plane incident…Maybe she was just having a bad day? I’m not say either of those things she did was right, but I also don’t think it’s right to judge someone we don’t even know for two not-that-great incidents! We all have our moments, after all! :)

- CelebBabyLover on

stellan, i don’t have a front porch, although i’ve always wanted one. you probably should have been more sensitive to the needs of those who don’t have porches. we ARE in a recession you know.

- fuzibuni on

I’m not a fan of Angie Harmon, but I really like the way she answered Finley’s question about being famous. I have to give her props for that.

- alice jane on

Goodness. A lot of people have TVs + couches in their basements – and call them home theaters! I am amazed that anyone would be offended. Besides, it’s not like Angie and her husband didn’t earn their money. Jason Sehorn especially did it the hard way, gruesome injuries and all. Why should they not be allowed to enjoy the fruits of their labor???

- martina on

Interesting comments. It’s nice how she explained the concept to her daughter, though.

- All Women Stalker on

@ cris — LOL! With how overly sensitive people can be around here, I wanted to make sure everybody knew for darn sure well that I was talking about DALLAS and not their hometown where no one has a home theater! ;)

(Hopefully that didn’t offend anyone…)

- Amanda on

Lol at first I thought the same as other posters about her level of fame but then I thought…”she’s more famous (recognized) than any of us” :-)

- RIP Michael on

you people are ridiculous. you all know who she is, you know her name and her face, ergo the lady is famous.

i may not like her much, and she probably only shared that story to make herself sound good, but whatever, at least she’s not teaching her children that famous people are more important than everyone else. hollywood’s already full of parents like that.

also, who gives a shit if she has a theater in her house? i mean, whatever. don’t be jealous of what other people own, it’s really unattractive.

- sgtmian on

wow. just, wow. i wondered why on earth her comment garnered so much response.

i think her response was good.

- marfmom on

Wonderful answer.
