David Arquette: Trying For Baby No. 2 Is 'Hard Work'

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic

As kids get older and develop their own personalities, many begin to favor one parent over the other. Not true for Coco Riley Arquette, says dad David Arquette during a recent visit to The Bonnie Hunt Show.

Noting that the 5 ½-year-old is “definitely her own person,” David shares that he and wife Courteney Cox-Arquette catch glimpses of each other in their daughter.

“She’s a little messy so that’s sort of on my side, but she’s very strong-willed which is very Courteney-like,” he muses. One thing is certain, however — despite her two actor parents, Coco is developing an interest in music!

“We got her a flute recently and she is just walking around [pretending to play],” he laughs. “We’re jammin’ a lot, a little Jethro Tull.”

Whether Coco will become a big sister has yet to be decided. Although David and Courteney would love to expand their family, the actor admits it’s easier said than done. “I mean, it takes a lot for us to do it, so maybe adoption,” he reveals.

Quickly realizing his unintentional pun, David clarifies,

“Hey! Listen, I like practicing as much as possible! But it’s hard, I’m exhausted!”

Wasn’t Coco the result of artificial insemination? I wonder if Courtney and David will go down that route again.

- Brianne on

I’m sorry to be a downer, but she’s in her mid-40′s. Her chances of naterally having a child are slim(but not impossible). I think if they were serious about having another child, they would have done it earlier.

- Lacey on

I love this family. Beauty, kindness & a great sense of humor, couldn’t get better than that! :)

- Rachel from Boston on

@Lacey Coco was conceived via IVF after (I believe) 8 miscarriages, so perhaps they’ve been trying all of this time and just not been successful. Not everything needs to be advertised sometimes.

I think adoption might not be a bad road for them. I remember the interview with Courtney where she talked about the pain involving her fertility struggles, so it might be an easier time for them. Either way, best of luck to them.

- Mary-Helen on

I’m guessing we’ll get a surprise surrogacy announcement with them much like with SJP and MB :)

I hope they have more! Coco is adorable and I think it’s nice when children have siblings :)

- Lis on

If I remember correctly, they finally found out that Courteney’s body would abort the pregnancy on its own and she has to take an antibiotic while pregnant.

- Tara on

From what I remember from an interview after Coco was born, Courtney has a blood condition that makes it necessary for her to take drugs during pregnancy, because her body treats the embryo like a foreign object (similar to transplants) and aborts it.

- Sonya on

Lacey, they know that, hence what David was saying. Sounds like maybe they’ve been trying IVF and it’s not working. I would love to see them adopt, since it sounds like they’re considering that road. They’re a cute family :-)

Just have the one……..there is nothing wrong with having 1 child

- Joann on

I would love to see them have another child either thru adoption or birth – Coco would be a great big sis! Plus, I think it’s neat to have a sibling – I know my daughter wished that she had one – she gets lonely!

- daniela on

Oh dear, I do wish her lots of luck because she needs it. She is a very few years shy of the big FIVE-OH it is harder to conceive the older you get. Babies born to older moms (35 and up) are more vulnerable to health problems as well (particularly Downs Syndrome). I’ll cross my fingers for her.

- Gina Nicole on

Why are people not reading? He says: “it takes a lot for us to do it” so they know it is not going yo happen naturally. He is just joking about the practising to make light of a difficult situation in their lives.

- Anna on

Gina – really? Thanks so much for that information. I’ll be sure to be extra worried now that I’m 37.

- DD on

DD-you don’t really have to worry. A 37 year old has a much higher chance of conceiving than an almost 46 year old which Courteney is. =)

- Karina on

I would love to see them have another child. Maybe a surrogate down the road? I know she had a lot of trouble having Coco and she is getting older so the odds are against her carrying a baby herself. Good luck to them none the less.

- Lorus on

I hope they do adopt some day! I love it when celebrities adopt! :)

- CelebBabyLover on

Actually on average fertility in women starts to decrease after 30. It’s not nice to hear but true.

- Anna on

I agree with most of the comments here. Of course, I’m not them, but it sure would make sense to go the same route as Sarah Jessica Parker at 44. Courtney will be 46 this June, I believe. Not to say it won’t happen naturally, but chances are it won’t. Another great option is to adopt!! How about from Haiti?? Good luck to them, they seem like great parents to Coco already! :)

- Sarah on

Sarah- From what I understand, it’s not possible to adopt from Haiti at the moment unless you were already in the process of doing so prior to the Earthquake (in otherwords, people who were in the process of adopting from Haiti prior the quake will be allowed to complete the process).

- CelebBabyLover on

good luck to them, whichever route they go. :)
