Matthew Broderick's Parenting Plan: 'I'm Making It Up As We Go Along'

Bruce Glikas/FilmMagic

Father-of-three Matthew Broderick has tossed the parenting books aside and is relying on pure instinct when it comes to raising James Wilkie, 7, and his fraternal twin daughters Marion Loretta Elwell and Tabitha Hodge, 6 months. “The father thing is basically improv,” the actor tells PARADE.

“I’m just making it up as we go along. I love being a father, but I don’t have any advice about it.”

Case in point? For Matthew there is no problem admitting defeat when reasoning with James. “The other day he was having an argument with me. He was like, ‘Can I just say something?’” he recalls. “I was like, ‘No, I know what you’re gonna say.’” It was at that moment that son quickly turned the tables on his father!

“He said, ‘How is it ever possible to know what somebody’s gonna say before they say it?’” he shares.

“And I said, ‘I guess it isn’t.’ So where could I go from there?”

With his top-notch negotiating skills, James’ future is looking bright. And while Matthew would not be surprised to eventually be joined by his son in the acting industry, he says James is determined to cover his bases.

“He has a whole list of career possibilities already, he wants to be ready in case one doesn’t work out,” he quips. “Astronaut is high on the list and there’s also fireman and maybe being a baseball player.”

While Loretta and Tabitha have yet to put their reasoning abilities to use with their dad, the twins still manage to keep Matthew and mom Sarah Jessica Parker on their toes! Noting that the girls — who are already sleeping through the night — are “basically … very easy to take care of” — a Christmas cold put a glitch in the family’s schedule.

“They would wake up every two hours coughing. It’s really hard because one would hear the other cry and start crying too, so that was absolutely exhausting,” he admits.

“But I won’t lie, we have plenty of help because you can’t really handle them alone.”

Katey Sagal Carries Her Curly-Haired Cutie

Fame

Esmé Louise Sutter enjoys a sweet treat after a visit to the doctor with mom Katey Sagal on Wednesday in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The 3-year-old is the first child together for the actress and her husband, Sons of Anarchy creater Kurt Sutter. Katey is also mom to Jackson James, 13, and Sarah Grace, 15, from a previous marriage.

Speaking to CNN earlier this year, Katey mused on motherhood.

“Being a mother has been my greatest teacher and also the most self-sacrificing thing I’ve ever done. I’ve never loved anybody the way I love my children. It’s an experience I was surprised by.

You have your boyfriend, your husband, your friends, but it’s a different thing. It’s deeper, and it’s a fantastic — and risky — commitment to love that deeply.”

Caught Caring: Marcia Gay Harden, Carnival Cruise Lines and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Celebrity Baby Blog – Caught Caring

It’s not every day that you’re made godmother of a cruise ship, but Marcia Gay Harden was recently named just that.

In November, the actress and mom-of-three was on hand to officially christen Carnival Dream — the newest, largest and most family-friendly cruise ship in Carnival Cruise Lines fleet. An old maritime tradition, a ship’s godmother not only names the vessel, she also wishes it safe passage — something Marcia, 50, calls “a lovely idea.”

Her motivation, however, went beyond symbolism. “What really made me feel close to the project,” she explains, “is that they’re donating millions of dollars to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for kids who are dealing with cancer.”

$3 million, to be exact! The multi-year partnership has a lofty fund-raising goal indeed, and it has already produced a book: The Dream Plucker of Perrysport.

Written by children aboard Carnival Cruise Line ships, it stresses the importance of following your dreams.

Last week, Marcia read the book to schoolchildren in Brooklyn, and spoke afterward of why she chose to get involved.

“Kids are an issue that’s close to me,” she explains. “I love, love, love children.”

“I’ve been to St. Jude’s before, and my daughter’s come with me, and she said ‘These girls are the heroes.’ There [are] many, many charities that I’m involved in, but this program, providing millions and millions of dollars for cancer research — I think it’s fantastic.”

A one-of-a-kind pediatric treatment and research facility in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude’s is a place where the sickest of sick children are likely to wind up.

All patients accepted in a protocol there are treated regardless of their family’s ability to pay.

As a result, funding is always an issue — and the hospital has built America’s second-largest health care charity to keep up with demand.

To support the hospital, under the theme ‘Care to Play,’ Carnival has created several fun, interactive fund-raising activities on board the Carnival Dream which will involve guest participation. The cruise line has also vowed to donate hundreds of copies of The Dream Plucker of Perrysport to the hospital.

Marcia’s three children with husband Thaddaeus Scheel are Eulala Grace, 11, and 5 ½-year-old twins Julitta Dee and Hudson Harden.

Padma Lakshmi Drops Hints About Baby’s Name

Padma Lakshmi is keeping a lot about her pregnancy secret, but she’s revealing that the baby, due this spring, will hold to at least one tradition.

“I am going to name the child an Indian name — I’m Indian,” the Top Chef host, 39, said Tuesday at Vermilion restaurant in New York City, at a dinner celebrating Indian women in the culinary arts.

Without divulging the sex of the baby, Padma says she has in mind is “not a fancy name, but a name that is close to my family. It will be after someone in my family.”

“So don’t expect to see an Anglicized name — it will be a classically Indian Sanskrit name,” said Padma, whose own first name means “lotus flower” in Sanskrit.
